This is an advanced question in uncharted territory. Hopefully someone is in as deep as me!
Basic structure
hf_arm_lel_0.msh
hf_arm_lela_0.mmh
hf_arm_lela_0.phy
hf_arm_lela.mao
If you open the PHY file in the toolset it only references the MMH file. Therefore if you are making new model variations do you really need a new PHY with every variation?
I deleted the PHY for my variations and it seems fine in game. Any repercussions?
PHY files. Do we need them for new models?

According to the Wiki it is
.PHY — Physics file, contains Novodex collision info
If you delete it, there is still the original file. is it not

If you don't want collision with your object I guess you could. Its created automatically on compile though so I would think its more work to delete it.

As well as collision, it also holds sound properties, for static models like floors and such. You don't need it for things like hair meshes.
