But you can throw in whatever you'd like!

A lot of people here I feel are going to say KOTOR, with some justification. I mean it really is the spiritual predecessor to ME.

Others might jump to Halo, but honestly outside of the solid combat, the games have uninspired stories (havent played Reach or 4 though..) and really present nothing innovative to science fiction or games as a medium. At least within the actual games.

Crysis...yeah not even in the same league, nor close.

Gears of War, while introducing what seems this generation's single most widely adapted gameplay mechanic (standard cover system) really only showed narrative promise in the first game, and sort of took a Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy spiral downwards in terms of story. The games pulled me in less with each installment, and it seems with Epic leads leaving the studio and a new team in charge, the latest iteration is a beefed up Army of Two.

Killzone suffers from much of the same I criticize about Halo. In fact, without a windfall of Sony money and the ego necessary to have their own Halo, this franchise never would have seen it past the 1st sub-par iteration.

Deus Ex HR for me is the only science-fiction RPG that could theoretically rival ME on a narrative front, but the gameplay mechanics are far less inviting and there is a certain feeling through the first half of the game that you'd be better off watching YT videos or reading a strategy guide, then attempting it yourself.

Bioshock Infinite maybe? The game is touted to be this game generation's true artistic epitome, but I have yet to buy it.

Fallout 3 and NV both I really wanted to like, but with the lack of self-personality, endless travel, a huge open environment that seemed empty and just big for the sake of big, ugly textures, glitchyness, lack of likable charatcers, oft-broken AI companions, and lack of a compelling and immediate overarching narrative, even 10-15 hours in I felt annoyed playing it.

Aliens Colonial Marines is one of the worst games released in recent memory.

On Metacritic Half-Life 2, ME2 and Bioshock hold the highest scores for sci-fi franchises. I know which one I love most.

Mass Effect, the orignal, was probably the best experience ive had in gaming. I fell in love with the universe, characters and the reaper plot back then just blew my mind! So yeah, id say ME.
Of couse gameplay wise, today its very outdated but for me its still the best and more satisfying.

Half Life 2 is probably one of the best games ever, i never seem to get tired of it but i just love ME even more.

Comparing Fallout and ME is a no no. They different types of Sci-fi. One is post apocalyptic and the other is Futuristic. I just don't think they belong int the same category.

Bioshock Infinite I haven't played yet, but it's on the list

The best Sci-fi game, to me, is the first ME.

We can compare them.
Both are Sci-fi SP RPGs.

Mass Effect
Deus Ex
New Vegas, though I don't consider it sci-fi, is a brilliant game as well.

I can't think of any other currently. Serious lack of sci-fi games me thinks or maybe I haven't heard of some?

Pretty much this. In my opinion the original Mass Effect wasn't great because it had 'visceral gameplay', but because the atmposhere and plot execution was so damned fantastic it blew me away.

The only game in recent memory that has come relatively close to capturing the same experience I felt while playing ME was Metroid Prime, and that came out years before ME did.

Mass Effect Trilogy is the best sci-fi story ever made. And not only among the games.

The Mass Effect trilogy.

A very close runner up would be Deus Ex.

I would say Mass Effect Trilogy, but at gunpoint, I'd single out ME1 as the best sci-fi game of the gen.

However, I respectfully submit Portal 1 and 2 for consideration as well.

Mass Effect, Deus Ex:Human Revolution (but the second one is just starting out while ME is done...sadly).

Totally different genre.  Puzzle game vs Action RPG...hard to compare.

Still undeniably a sci-fi game, though. With a funny and intelligent story, to boot.

I haven't played Bioshock but out of everything else you listed I'd say Mass Effect.

I tried.  Couldn't make it past about 20 minutes.  Meh.

Mass Effect as a whole is my favourite. I'm not one who's really into the science of sci-fi, but I guess Deus Ex is closer to hard sci-fi than ME?

I think that a hard sci-fi is very hard to pull off, especially given it's a GAME and an RPG, they don't necessarily spell 'easy writing' when there are other factors such as gameplay to worry about.

I agree, you can't compare Valve's FPS's to these RPG's unless you're speaking from a purely narative point of view.

In that case, Half-Life wins by far. Even though ME has a whole universe to it, Half-Life would make a hell of a novel to read while ME would be more of a traditional story with a lot more of an emphasis on the background.

Mass Effect series, hands down.

The Deus Ex series is the only one that comes remotely close IMO.
