I played Lego Star Wars a ton. That must count for something.

Star Wars is actually space fantasy. Not sci-fi. Its not even futuristic.

lol @ those saying ME2.

Sorry folks, but a game where death itself is cured and nobody cares is not science fiction.

Bioshock 2 - Best combination of gameplay and story. Gameplay mechanices and story elements blend into each other perfectly.

Surprised you picked 2 instead of 1. The latter is usually more popular. (Not-being-a-dick-acutally-intrgued) xD

There's more interaction with the characters, more choices to make apart from just the Little Sister dilemma.
Apart from that, I found that the first one dragged on for too long at the end. There's like what, 5 stages after the big plot twist? The plot twist is great and all, but after that it kinda goes downhill, at least until you get to the ending cutscene... whereas the last segment of Bioshock 2 is the strongest.
Not saying the first one is bad, but in direct comparison, I just prefer the second one. Even if it does recycle a lot of the first one's elements. Yeah, I didn't mind that. I ate it all up. I even wouldn't have minded it if Bioshock Infinite was set in Rapture, too.

^ If Inception and Omega Man are sci fi, then Assassins Creed and The Walking Dead are too. Scifi is an very broad genre. More so than it is given credit.

Turning point and Black Knight are fantasy, not sci fic. Read more often.

Really, a game where the US is invaded in a contemporary war and a movie where Martin Lawrence time-travels to the past to meet an ancestor of his girlfriend are not scifi to you but AC is? Hahah

Now that I look at it like that Black Knight is a super silly version of AC

Big Rigs Racing. That game is the best scifi game ever. It brings the idea of completely throwing the established laws of physics and replacing them with nothing to the genre. The story is just really emotionally moving too. I mean, the epic adventure and adversity that you meet from the start and then the amazing finale on any of the maps if really touching.

Pretty much all the games the OP mentioned are better games with a better story/plot than the Mass Effect trilogy.

The first Mass Effect game was really good though and has a spot in my top 10 for sure.
But ME2 and ME3? Myeahhhhhhhhhhhhno.

My top 10 sci-fi games (of all time, not just this generation):

1. Deus Ex 1
2. Fallout 1
3. Half-Life 2
4. Mass Effect 1
5. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
6. Bioshock Infinite
7. Bioshock 1
8. Knights of the Old Republic 2 (with restored content patch)
9. Dishonored
10. Gears of War

A few titles who I wanted to place in that top 10 but couldn't find a place for them:

- F-Zero GX
- Portal (2)
- System Shock (2)
- Fallout: New Vegas
- Knights of the Old Republic
- Crysis 1

The best for me was Mass Effect 1: no other game in recent memory was able to capture and interest me as much.

Other games I greatly enjoyed from this gen were Deus Ex Human Revolution, Portal 2 and the Assassin's Creed series (third one less than the others, though).

While I would say both KotOR & Sith Lords were awesome and among my favorites, but going with this gen...
*Fallout New Vegas
Bioshock+2+Infinite
*Portal+2
ODST
*Mass Effect
Quantum Conundrum
Cave Story
Warp
With games like Alpha Protocol, Heavy Rain, & Metro 2033 having very loose or minor sci-fi.
Also Dead Space. The second game made me hate the character & the series, but I loved the idea & have alot of respect for that game regardless & its worthy for a top list.
...with *games being the runners for my favorite.

nitt picky here, HL2 is not this gen. It came out in November of 2004, about 1 year before xbox 360 came out and another 2 years till PS3, so it's not this gen.

But I'd say this gen it's

Mass Effect 2
Mass Effect 1
Halo 4
Deus EX HR
Dead Space 2

I consider Bioshock to be orwellian/dystopia type of genre. But if it's considered scifi then Bioshock is only behind ME1 and ME2.

This gen: Still keenly waiting for X: Rebirth - although truth be told I'm not sure I have the time for X games these days.

I won't repeat the obvious sci fi RPG and FPS choices, except to add Quake(!), Doom and Unreal/UT (2004 and below) series I didn't see mentioned in brief glance at thread, along with Tremulous and AVP classic.

Also, Freespace, Homeworld, and a number of space MMOs which tend to be great for a few months.

Technically the original Far Cry was sci fi, too. Awesome game.

Where's the strategy love?
FTL - Roguelike and starship captain YAY
X-COM: EU - Aside from glitches very fun and challenging
Starcraft - I don't like RTS in general but you can't ignore this or its impact
All great sci-fi where you made the story (on the battlefield that is not the overarching plot) and were very good

I predate this generation so please excuse an early reference:

1. Starflight - the game Mass Effect was heavily inspired by; played it repeatedly and mapped the galaxy on graph paper. :D

2. Mass Effect - an epic game that feels a bit like a movie; enjoy replaying it.

3. Half Life 2 - does a good job of making me feel like a rebel in a repressed world. Love it.

4. F.E.A.R. - never get tired of playing hide and seek with Alma, and I like the story.

5. F.E.A.R. 2 - more Alma, and I love the armored suit sequences.

Tried playing KOTOR but lost interest a short way in. Would like to give it a second chance someday. I missed the whole Deus Ex thing but have HR which I hope to play someday. I don't like RTS games other than Age of Empires/Kings so that's off my list.

Mass Effect/Half Life both very good.

System Shock 2 is older but was exquisite.

Hmm this is rough, my fav Sci-Fi games/series would be(and I am only mentioning top 5 because otherwise I would be here all day):

1. Mass Effect(series as a whole)
2. Fallout(series as a whole)
3.KotoR(series as a whole)
4.Gears of War
5. Tie between Starcraft and Resident Evil(I have played more Resident Evil BUT Starcraft is amazing so far)

by the way to the guy saying "star wars is not sci-fi it is space fantasy"

http://en.wikipedia....Science_fiction

by definition "space fantasy' is very much a form of sci-fi. However I have some buddies who get mad when you refer to Star Wars as Sci-Fi, so I know where you are coming from I guess.

@OP

What do you mean about HR's gameplay mechanics being "far less inviting"? Because compared to Mass Effect (and even to shooter and stealth games) it excels in its gameplay mechanics. Even though the game is an action-RPG it actually plays better and feels better than most shooter games. Mass Effect only ever became good gameplay wise with Mass Effect 2. Combat in the first one was a mess.

I'd say Halo is the top for me. I couldn't care about anything innovative being brought. It had a good consistent story-line throughout the Bungie set of games and I must say that Halo 4 has upped the story-telling further more with the Chief. The way you saw his human side certainly changed the perceptive of him. Some say (based on the games alone) that Master Chief is just a typical boring character because he didn't say much and hid behind that helmet of his but after Halo 4 I don't think anyone could say the same again.

Mass Effect triumphs over Halo in terms of its lore, background and history though. Mass Effect (just like Halo) has the potential to become a sci-fi film series that could easily rival star wars. Seriously the film industry needs to realize the err of their ways and pick up both Halo and ME to make some movies from them. Their universes alone have so much potential for so many different stories.

Deus EX: HR is third on the list. Gameplay wise it triumphs over Mass Effect if you ask me. Story-wise it didn't grip me in the same way although the themes and how they were handled were all done well if you ask me and actually leaves one thinking about what is almost (if not already) a reality. We already have such tech and it's only a matter of time before it reaches the HR level. How longer then will it be before we do face the moral question of what it means to be human? Also the atmosphere of the game was absolutely phenomenal.

I'm going to open a can or worms too.

What is so great about Half Life 2? I admit the physics were fun and I had fun putting the can back in the bin after the Police knocked it off and facial animations but other than that, its nothing special.

Its just a first person shooter about a nerd saving the world. I mean seriously, a physicist with no military background suddenly knows how to use a weapon?

Maybe I was too young to appreciate the game at 11. I'm more interested in a Portal 3.

Come at me.

I thought the same about HL1. But something just clicked with HL2, and I still haven't been able to point my finger on it.
