Has anyone tried this game out? I found out about it around Christmas holidays and has me totally hooked!

https://kerbalspaceprogram.com/

It's still in developement (currently 0.20 release) but is very playable. There is a free demo that is restricted to Kerbin and Mun (Earth and Moon equivalent) in orbit around the Sun and just some basic rocket parts. But enough to be able to send a Kerbalnaut to Mun and back. The full game has a full solar system to explore. 7 planets and numerous moons all revolving around the sun in real time.

It may look all cartoony and it is. BUT this is not an easy game to master. It's both extremely funny and frustrating at the same time. There's real physics involved. Gravity and orbital mechanics play key roles here. There will be countless rocket explosions, critical failures and more Kerbals KIA or left stranded on some desolate rock with little to no hope of rescue.

Some of my more memorable missions:

Bill and Jeb's mission to Mun's South Pole:

My first mission to Duna (Mars equivalent):
http://imgur.com/a/F6ata

My Heavy Mobile Mining Rig, HMMR or THE HAMMER. This is perhaps the largest rover ever built.
(Alright aerodynamics isn't modeled in the game yet. but still.)
http://imgur.com/a/MgUvl

It's all up to your imagination.

I'd love to see your designs.

Ah, I remember  this. Been watching Robbaz's Viking Space Program on youtube every time he uploaded. Heh, looks like a fun game and I do not doubt that it's difficult to master. Still, not my cup of tea.

I think the thing that draws me to it is the start from scratch, sand box aspect. You're not in an already established world where everything is already in place (well the planets are). Here you have to build the infrastructure and bring the Kerbals (kicking and screaming mostly) into the space age and to figure out how to get there. There will be a campaign mode eventually. Resource collecting will be implemented next release I think.

It's all Newtonian physics based. Not some arcade like flight controls, "planes in space" type of game. Although you CAN build planes and fly them, getting them into space is extremely difficult and my biggest obstacle ATM.

Piloting the L3 VindiGator, Bilbas Kerman. The first Kerbal to successfully reach orbit in a SSTO, Single Stage To Orbit craft...
Image IPB
Running on fumes, He has just enough fuel to dock at Kerbin Station and re-fuel.

Kerbin Station II. The pennacle of Kerbin engineering. Orbiting 250,000m above Kerbin.
Image IPB
Bilbas meets with the station crew to deliver news and packages from families back home.
With the tanks full he says his goodbyes.

After a few months go by... Eve,the purple planet.
Image IPB
Beautiful from a distance, but treacherous to those who stray too close into her grasp. Eve could be considered Kerbin's twin. With the exception of having about twice the gravity and atmosphere than Kerbin.

Entering Eve's orbit.
Image IPB

Sunrise over Eve. Bilbas, unaware of the danger, proceeds to enter Eve's atmosphere.
Image IPB
Kerbals just assumed jet engines would be able to function on Eve since there is an atmosphere.

Unfortunately for Bilbas there is no oxygen to ignite the fuel!
Image IPB
His plane, now too deep in the atmosphere to escape back into orbit, is pulled further down by atmospheric drag.
Spinning out of control Bilbas' only option is to eject. His parachute lands him safely to Eve's surface.
There is no hope of rescue. Eve has claimed her first Kerbal victim. Bilbas is now in Eve's unrelenting embrace.

Mission to Laythe: L4 SSTO piloted by Kelhat Kerman...
Image IPB
Fresh off assembly at the SPH, the L4 VindiGator Mk 2.
LKO is successful. Next stop refuel at Kerbin Station.

Kerbin Sunrise...
Image IPB
With all tanks full, Kelhat makes preparations to leave Kerbin orbit.

One last look at Kerbin...
Image IPB
Kelhat swings his plane around to get one last look at Kerbin before hitting the bunk.
He has a long flight ahead of him as he leaves Kerbin's SOI.

Over 200 days later. The green giant, Jool. The King of Kebol's planets...
Image IPB
You can see the 3 of the 5 moons of Jool. Tylo, Vall, and Laythe, Kelhat's ultimate destination.

Midcourse correction...
Image IPB
To entercept Laythe's SOI.

Kerbol peaking out over Laythe...
Image IPB

Powering up jets in Laythe's atmosphere...
Image IPB
As luck would have it there is oxygen in Laythe's atmosphere. The VindiGator's jet engines fire up without incident.

Searching for a landing site...
Image IPB
Laythe is predominately liquid oceans scattered with numerous islands. Due to Laythe's close proximity to Jool, the Gas giant's tidal forces keep the oceans from freezing.

Straight ahead a strip of land...
Image IPB
A potential landing site is found.

On final approach...
Image IPB

And a not so great landing...
Image IPB
The sandy, rocky terrain is just too much for the plane to bare and it breaks up on touchdown.
But hey, any landing you can walk away from is a good landing right?

Examining the wreckage...
Image IPB
Kelhat searches his living quarters for supplies. Relatively intact, at least he'll have a place to sleep out of the elements. A beach umbrella and chair would go nice with his case of Coronas :D

Taking a dip at the beach...
Image IPB
With surface tempertures at -40 the water is really cold. Shrinkage is the least of his problems. :)
No need to ice down his beer here. Woah! the water got warm all of a sudden :P

That Intro Vid pretty much sums up my first attempts at KSP.  I don't know what they did to 0.19 but my once, reliable (somewhat) spaceplanes can't even get into orbit now. They either explode, fall apart on the runway or spin out of control. Sometimes all 3 at once!. Just wish I could land the blasted things in one piece.:pinched:
With rockets on the other hand I have built some  monsters that are pretty stable.

The "Struts" that you stretch, attached from one part to another is the key. Strut tanks stacked at seams and decouplers, will help cure the wobbles. ADD MOAR STRUTS:wizard: will fix alot of ships. I have a few that looks like a spiderweb of struts. :D

Ok I just bought the game and my bog standard rocket made it into orbit first attempt! Yay. Problem was once in orbit I had nothing to get it back down. Go forward planning!

After that failure I had a bit of fun making some crazy designs, just to see them collapse on the launcher =P There is a learning curve to this game. I think I will just run through the basics for now of getting my Kerbal into orbit and back safely!

I would say watch this from around here. My design was pretty much the same. Lots of solid fuel boosters!

It doesn't look pretty, but it will get you there! =D

Also there is the wiki page.

I just been playing again for the past hour and am still struggling to make it back in one piece. Getting into orbit is fine. Not to good at getting back yet.

Ah don't think you can get into orbit in the Demo, well you can just nothing happens. I should buy the full version as the parts in the Demo are quite limited, you can get the game on steam now cant you?

yep, I bought my version on steam :)

Edit:  At last managed to get my Kerbal into orbit and back on my Mark IV rocket  (yeah took somee trial and error)  Needless to say im pretty proud of my Kerbal!!

:P

It was a short flight summed up in three screenshots,  but im still happy! B)

Those big rigs definitely makes my PC stutter like crazy until I shed those booster stages. Image IPB
All built with stock parts. The only mods I've used are ISA MapSat and Chatterer.

ISA MapSat: Dish placed on satellites allows sats (polar orbit works best) to scan planet's terrain and detect anomalies (Easter Eggs). Even then, unless the Easter Eggs are big enough to be seen from low orbit, they are still pretty hard to find. Also has a GPS device that you can put on rovers that puts an "I AM HERE" dot on the map.

Chatterer: Is just a radio box attached to the ship that adds radio chatter in Kerbal gibberish. I'm not positive but I think Iannic-ann-od recorded actual NASA transmissions played backwards. :) pretty clever.

Still totally jealous of your creations  B)

Still Im getting far more successful now. Launched my Radio Telescope into orbit, sitting at 2million meters around Kerbin its got a dish back home to send and receive signals and three dishes out into the Cosmos!

Success! ^_^ :)  (This took more longer then I care to admit!)

Sweet! I haven't toyed around with satellites all that much. The exception being the MapSat mod which I've used to "find" anomalies. Remote controlled rovers on the other hand...

I've been struggling for ages to get SSTO's into orbit and land again. That is without pieces and parts exploding all over the place. Well I finally have succeded...

I have this game. However I have as much luck with making orbits as North Korea, mind you I build great designs I just can't fly them worth ****.

Why I don't like the new update and how it screws with SAS.

If your rockets are prone to flying apart, writhing like a snake, add moar struts across tank seams and across adjacent tanks. I even add offset struts across decouplers by placing the small square cubic struts on either side of the decoupler then strut the cubics together. 2 to 4 symmetry for most builds. 6 to 8 for the big builds.

I found the 0.21.1 release improved SAS. RCS propellant no longer hemorrhages profusely if you forget to turn it off. Now you can make course corrections while SAS is active. If you leave RCS on it will zero out any occilation. It also cut down my RCS tanks by half of what I used to have. You just have to add a couple batteries and some solar panels. I use the individual panels because those can stand up to atmospheric flight without ripping off. 2 to 4 are usually enough.

I've done all that. Problem is I can't fly them worth a ****. I get topple overs, or burn too much fuel, or I can't get the orbit set in just right.  Like I've had 100's of launches, and they all failed to reach even one orbit. My designs are solid I've had others try the, and they work A-okay. I just can't fly them.

As to that I've seen a bit of a debate on the forum, some people love the change, some hate it.

I don't really fly them myself I just aim them in the general direction lock in SAS and hope for the best :D.
Here's what works for me:
Asparagus staging. It really adds to overall distance traveled.
Use Action Keys to lock outer gimbals. Keeping center rocket free.

Prelaunch:
1. Turn on SAS.
2. Throttle up to max.
3. Lock outer gimbals.
4. Launch Rocket.

Ascent:
4. Go straight up until you reach 10,000m.
5. Pitch angle of rocket to ~20°, bearing 90° East.
5. When you reach ~30,000m pitch angle to 45°.
6. Switch back and forth to Map View to watch your apoapsis reach > 70km. I usually aim for 150km~250km orbits so I can Timewarp at a higher multiplier.
7. Kill your engines.
8. In Map View add a Maneuver Node at your apoapsis and drag prograde out to a circular orbit.
9. Point the rocket at the blue marker on navball.
10. Fire rockets halfway of your total burn time before you reach maneuver node.
(ie: If total burn time is 1 minute. Start burning 30 seconds to node.)

I do all that. The SAS tends to screw me over in the end however.

Two problem points I hit are at the key point of exiting into space, when you brush the atmosphere at times my rockets will belly over. And when I'm in space and adjust my ship often times it will start to spin. Mostly thanks to the SAS. If I don't use it I seem unable to get dailed in just right. Maybe I just need to play around with it some more.
