I don't mean school books or the books you used to learn how to read, but the first one you remember completing yourself?

Mine was

As in, fully?

Probably Christine; Stephen King

That or Cujo.
My dad used to read that kind of stuff often, and I sometimes took the books and read them for myself.

Other than books designed for a 4 or 5 year old that I can no longer remember, the first true book I ever read was The Hobbit. The second was Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson.

First book at all? Probably of the Dr. Suess variety. The first one I remeber was Robinson Crusoe. My pa gave it to me the summer before third grade. I was going to a new school and it was one of those ridiculous 'gifted' programs and he thought a book about self reliance might come on hand. I finished in a day so I wouldn't waste any more of my summer than a

First one I remember vividly was Carrie by Stephen King. Think I was around 10 or so back then. I'm positive I read pile of various boy aventure books for kids before that. You know, ones where four guys and a dog solve Mystery of The Haunted Well etc etc etc. Alas names of those have been forgotten in sands of time.

ps @TheSunnyPlace: high-five!

I was hoping that someone would post its picture and I would realized it.

I don't remember the titles of those early kid novels, but later there was Huckleberry-fin, Narnia series, John Christopher books, Isaac Asimov sci-fi novels.
I know that I was interested in Astronomy, Geology and Chemistry between age 9-14. Later I became interested in History, Geography and exotic Religions. At my best (age: 21 and later) I've been totally interested in Philosophy, Ethics and Politics and a little of Linguistics.

The Hobbit. Anything before that I 'pretend read.' I would say to the teacher that I was reading 'in my head' and get away at staring at the pictures.

Not sure what the exact first book was, as I read a lot when I was young. Lots of books for children I don't even remember, but the most important for me and the ones I read most often must have been "The Hobbit" and Roald Dahl's "The Big Friendly Giant".
Yay for "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", loved it as a child - I need to get that for my quasi-godson asap! Image IPB

Actually, the first fun book I remember taking up on my own and finishing was Astrid Lindgren's Masterdetective Rasmus. She wrote fantastic out-of-this-world children's books.

Luckily they all were translated into my native language. Soon after Masterdetective (not translated into English until this day) I read Boys of Pal Street (translated title is The Children on Troublemaker Street), Rasmus and the Vagabond, Karsson-on-the-roof (must-read!). Actually, all her books are youngling-stories' brilliance in purest form.
