Dishonoured also disappointed me. I expected to love the heck out of it, but for all its talk of player freedom there really wasn't any. The levels were contained and linear, the only variance was how you chose to deal with enemies. I guess I was expecting much more of an open world based on all the pre-release hype.

But the developers specifically said that it was mission based and not open world?

I haven't been playing video games long enough to have a lifetime disappointment award.  Probably Fallout 3 GOTY being so entirely borked by Games for Windows Live, and now it being unplayable on our Windows 7 machine too.

I have the Fallout 3 GOTY edition and it plays fine on my Windows 7 machine.
My biggest disappointments have been TES:Oblivion and Witcher 1 with Witcher 2 not far behind.

They did state it was level based, it's his own fault Dishonored disappointed him, it's an amazing game

Dark Souls.
Like many people, I picked it up because everyone either complained or praised how difficult it is. I never got to even try it out, however. I quit after the tutorial boss, simply because everything about the game isn't my kind of thing.

The animations look horrible, especially running and basic movement. I think we're past the time, where character animations make no difference between in combat or exploring. Too arcade for me. Additionally, the camera distance/position is inexplicably weird. It just doesn't feel "right". Then there's the menu. I know that eventually you know every game's menu like your backpocket, but like with the camera and animations, it just looks so... Uninspired. In the lack of a better word. Like they're not even trying to make you be comfortable with it.

I realize every single one of my complaints is purely a matter of taste. A lot of people really love it, so it's just not for me. I know this cannot make it a bad game. I just wish I could have forced myself to get as far as to be able to comment on the difficulty, since I'm usually really into games that demand a lot of learning, reaction and timing... Other than that if you wrote its setting & key features on a piece of paper, it reads like a game made for me. But it gets so many little details wrong, that I think I could put up with it for weeks.

I can think of three games that were my biggest disappointments...  Mass Effect 3, Dark Cloud, and Kingdom Hearts 2.

Starting off with Dark Cloud, my first major disappointment...  I had heard from many people and many gaming forums that the game was the Zelda of the Playstation, so naturally, being a Zelda fan I decided to finally pick it up for my collection.  I'm not sure what those people were drinking...but it was nothing like Zelda...unless you count some kid that looked somewhat remotely similar to Link.  Ignoring all of that, the game I picked up was defective...I had to buy another used copy just to get past the jungle boy scene.  It was really one huge failure in my eyes and I was certainly disappointed.  DC2 was much improved, but the first was downright pathetic.

The second was Kingdom Hearts II on the PS2.  I greatly enjoyed the first game, spending countless hours exploring and fighting and just having a great time.  I didn't have a Gameboy (never been into handhelds much) so I never got Chain of Memories.  Going into KH2 I was completely lost.  I didn't know what was going on, who I should side with, what that guy with the red hair was talking about, or really why Sora was even in the predicament he was in originally.  I was so confused and didn't enjoy the game.  When CoM finally did come out on the PS2, the lingering disappointment kept me from even playing it.

Last, but certainly not least, was ME3.  Years of replays with different paths and characters, and all the dev interviews and news I had been following...I was so excited for it to be out.  I remember picking it up the night it released and the horror I experienced within the first few moments...  My Shepard was...not Shepard anymore...she had been replaced with some freaky scowling super pale thing...  The entire game felt lacking to me...all the choices black and white...  Then the end came and the broken promises just broke my heart and soul.  I couldn't game for a long time after that.  I actually stopped playing my 360 and went back to my PS2 because I felt so disgusted by ME...then after a few weeks of being angry and disappointed, I realized that I had known it was coming all along but had kept denying it, and that really made the disappointment worse because I realized it wasn't just ruined expectations but shattered hope.  And this is true - I have never been a fan of EA and I had feared this would happen when Bioware was bought.  I just didn't want to believe it would happen to my favorite series.  Lesson learned...EA ruins everything it touches with its greed.  Nothing is above the corruption of EA.  Now, I take dev interviews with a tablespoon of salt...  Won't be fooling me again.

Deus Ex HR: The Missing Link was pretty disappointing. It answered a question I hadn't thought to ask, and wasn't really interested in when they proposed it.

Kind of a fun extension of the gameplay and flavor of the main game, just...narratively disappointing.

Mass Effect 3, horrible plot and garbage conclusion. Played 3 games just to get jewed.

Fable III DAMN YOU PETER MOLYNEUX! That should explain everything in a clear concise manner.

As much as I adore and love Metal Gear Solid 4 and I really adore it It was disappointing how the content felt lacking Only the first two acts felt like Metal Gear Solid to me. Might as well be a movie.

Fallout New Vegas. I love this game to death, But it should have never launch in its current state... Infact there are still some noticeable bugs. I was lucky not to encounter most of the gamebreaking bugs.

Didn't experience personally but seen the Impact.

Why is it that people who hated ME2 still got ME3? Why is it that those who think ME3 is terrible still buy the DLC? I see so many posts from people bashing the DLC, when they had previously bashed ME3, and before that ME2. Do they really hate these games or do they just like to complain?

Well when two people love each other very much, fertilisation occurs. Then an embryo grows in the mothers womb and she gives birth to a baby after a period of about 9 months. That baby grew up to be Galbrant.

I haven't been burned that many times by games I've purchased, but three do stand out in my mind.

The first is Dynasty Warriors 6. I used to be a huge fan of this series, then this game happened. Whatever spell I was under that compelled me to buy every instalment of the series finally broke. I pretty much said, hey, this isn't fun, and I moved on.

The second is Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir. I'd never gotten to play a Fatal Frame title, but always wanted to. I'd heard this one was good, but a tad short. Atad short. The entire game took two hours to complete. That's not a "tad". I also wasn't a fan of having to stand up and spin around like an idiot in order to find the ghosts.

The third is Silent Hill: Downpour. I knew Team Silent was a distant memory, but I still had faith that the game would turn out okay. There were moments of brilliance, (a lot of which were easter egg references to the older games), but the story did nothing for me, there were glitchy doors in the subway tunnels that only opened when they felt like it, some of the sidequests were bugged and unable to be completed, and one of the final bosses had a series of "mash the button" QTEs that didn't seem to register half the time.

I think Downpour stung the most. I miss Silent Hill.

In recent history, it was Dragon Age 2. Dragon Age: Origins was such a great RPG and to see it morphed into DA2 was heartbreaking.

Wow, I continue to be surprised by what others found disappointing.

The Witcher 2 is probably my favourite RPG of all time.
I dumped 200 hours into Oblivion.
And even the Witcher 1 slightly surprised me, even with its flaws.

GTA: IV, easily. I already knew Fallout: 3 would suck with all the press that Bethesda was doing, and I returned Dragon Age: 2 as soon as it came in.

Bioshock 2. Not because it's that bad, which it certainly isn't, but because it's so far behind what the first game accomplished.

Why did you have to remind me of this? The pain!

In recent memory, the Mechwarrior reboot. The promising one with a four-player co-op campaign and interesting setting that never actually happened because Piranha Games decided it was smarter to stay silent for a year and a half, then turn it into yet another ho-hum multiplayer only pay-to-win arena game.

GTA Vice City - I heard masses of praise for the series so I thought I would give it a try only to find nonsensical missions in a po-faced manner with bland driving and awkward shooting.
Got to the point where a man gives you a gun, tells you to run away from chefs with kitchen knives and then tells you to go to a shop of his choice and buy a weapon despite me having no money due to hospital bills from a failed attempt to get fun out of the driving.
And even getting to the shop would mean being stopped or pursued by the police for no apparant reason.
Shortly afterwards gave up due to the sheer awfulness.

Besides FF13, the last BOF game Capcom did was pretty awful, so was the last Grandia game, probably why those two franchises appear to have been abandoned.

Mass Effect 3.

Complete and utter disappointment. Ruined the IP for me.
