Not bashing DA, it's one of the best games in a long while, but I just started playing Fallout 3 a few hours ago and

wow.

The sheer sense of atmosphere and interaction blows away anything DA had. Not to mention the innovative character-generation processes that were integrated into the prologue.

Not comparing the different genres, but the attention to details like
  • the gusts of dust,
  • the various radio broadcasts,
  • the very uniform presentation and branding,
  • towns with highly-varying elevation,
  • the ability to grab arbitrary trash and fling it around,
  • a day/night cycle,
  • more animated NPCs, quipping if they see you eying something of theirs,
  • stealing not being without consequences, and
  • the freedom to BEAT on anyone ^^
among other things, so far.

All the better to know that Black Isle's child is in Good Hands. <3

Yes, this should see me through to Awakening in March quite nicely ;)

and no spoilers please if you've already completed FO3 lol

I won't disagree that DA could have better environments but Fallout 3 is a sandbox game whereas DA isn't. I liked walking around the wasteland in Fallout 3 but I found the game to be lacking in every other department where I find DA excels at - story, characters, immersion.

Well they each have their strengths but I think for many people, including a few of my friends who are more easily bored than I, Fallout has a lot of reading (where Dragon Age reads out to you) and after a certain point begins to feel oddly repetitive. I'm not suggesting the copy-pasted subways or environment were the problem so much as the general feel of the game.

The DLC for fallout however puts DA:O to shame in virtually every measurable way. For me, as a long-time fallout fanboy since the very first fallout, I can admit that DA:O is probably a better game and I would be more inclined to recommend DA:O to friends than Fallout3. However as a franchise Fallout is obviously far and away better than Dragon Age since Fallout has been rolling over a decade while Dragon Age has only been being awesome for a few months now.

Fallout 3 was a smattering of quests all over the place. Theres a story there but you almost forget what the story and main quest is because of the hundreds and hundreds of stupid, unrelated sidequests. And there was far too much humor and silliness in Fallout3. Its a great game and beautiful atmospheres and such but the depth of the story and character development in Dragon Age just blows Fallout3 out of the water.

^ This.

Fallout 3 can be modded and updated into a fairly decent RPG but vanilla is strictly meh.

If post-apocalyptic immersion is your thing the atmosphere of S.T.A.L.K.E.R blows Fallout 3 out of the water

I guess the whole human-elf-dwarf-monster-demon is hardly new to anyone.
Fallout does have the more creative atmosphere. The endless ruins of a post-nuclear-war America and the mournful music was quite the idea and well developed too.

They are both top-shelf games, IMHO. They both bode well for MMOs coming from these companies. Both are great stories. DA is newer, so not surprising it gets the nod from me. Better cinematics and more dilema decisions. On the other hand, being a bit older allows Fallout to have more DLC and mods.

While I found Fallout 3 creepier and darker, I thought Dragon Age had far more colour, was brighter, and suited its genre more. There were more variations to places in Dragon Age, while in Fallout 3, everything was varying shades of grey. Even places like Megaton had an overly complex layout without really having any variation in its atmosphere. Perhaps this was intentional, since Fallout 3 is all about traveling through and around destroyed cities.

Ah well, compared to the lack of other options, such as there not being an FO3 at all, I believe they could've done much worse than leave it with Bethesda.

Also, updated my original post with a short list of the things that caught my attention right away.

and hmmm will have to look into S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Let me start with saying I have the utmost respect for anyone else who still gets a kick out of the Happy Fun Ball skit. I have that exact quote on my desk at work.

I love Fallout3, but it's almost apples to oranges. While there is a decent story in FO3 the story is meant to help drive the mechanics of playing an FPS. The immersion is all about being in this wretched, burned out, radioactive hell and scraping out a bit of goodness (or getting away with epic badness as you like). DA:O uses the mechanics to drive the story.

Lemme put it this way. In FO3 you advance the plot to get access to new skills/weapons/gear and better enemies to smite to a large degree. In DA:O you use your gear and advance your skills in order to move the story forward. Make sense? FO3 the focus is your stats/gear. DA:O is about the plot and story and interaction between your party along the way.

FO3 is a great FPS. Great atmosphere and I'm eager to see the modding community reach the height and breadth that Oblivion did so I can enjoy new adventures and story lines, above and beyond animated prostitution (not that pimpin' your party isn't fun for the whole family). Still though, I like the total atmosphere of DA:O more in terms of immersion. What NPC in FO3 was as engrossing as the folks in your party in DA:O? Ask anyone who played the female + Alistair love interest if your dad sacrificing himself in FO3 hit them in the gut like him sacrificing himself for you at the end of DA:O?

Apples and oranges though. Both great games. I'd give DA:O more points for variety and scope of atmosphere, FO3 more points for gritty immersion.

Fallout 3 is a nice game TBH but the main quest is a joke. I want my daddy back...lol...

And selling the right ending to the game as DLC got to be the biggest let down in gaming history.

Still I would be playing it now and then if it would not chrash every 5 min.

It is something that I have tried to explain to people "omg its all brown and dirty grrrrrrr" people a good bit.
It is a post apocyliptic world it is not going to be a bright and cherry place.
The area that FO3 takes place is where I lived most of my life 20+ years. (Those that know olney is about 10 miles south of me and olney is about 15 miles away from DC)
Trust me when I say there is not a lot of variety in the color scheme around here now any way. It is winter so the only thing with any color other then brown are the evergreens.

@sigil have you tried place a grenade on someone you are pickpocketing? Go ahead and try it. Maybe even a fat man round if you have one.

Fallout 3 is a decent game, but it's story (like all of bethesda's flat and dull games) doesn't really hold a candle to DA:O, same for the characters, that are just soulless quest givers with no real progression or emotional involvment to them.
Their very character design is one of the worst i've seen to date in a videogame. I can't stand Bethesda's "realistic = everyone must be ugly". There's no diversity, and that's why bethesda's games become good only after a good amount of modding.

Oh and the radio broacasts will get old and repeatitive VERY fast and the uniforms and branding aren't really bethesda's doing, but Interplay's.

Interplay's version of fallout (fallout 1 and 2) were much much better and atmoospheric than fallout 3, that is basically little more than an FPS with a semi-turn based component and levels.

I liked fallout 3 quite a bit, but as with all Bethesda games there was something a bit flat about it. I think the main thing is that their stories never really come close to being as good as Bioware's and their combat never poses any challenge at all. FO3, like all Bethesda games, relies on having fun with exploring the world. After 20 hours or so, that starts to wear rather thin.

I think that post-apocalyptia is one of the easier themes to do. Make it barren, grey and depressing in general. And it is hard to mess up the first two enough to make all that go away.

And you can't kill the kids or people essential to the plot.

Though it is nice to walk around listening to Butcher Pete.
