The squadmates I don't like are Ashley, Liara, Tali, EDI, and Garrus, in that order.

Did I inadvertently turn this thread into a random hatefest?

I apologize.

Don't judge a book by its cover. Attractive people aren't necessarily shallow.

God dammit, you're a volus. Don't apologize. Look for ways to exploit this for profit!

Eh, getting past his external appearance, he has the potential to be a deep guy.

He has motivation, he has a past that he struggles with over a genuinely tough issue, and he's not blindly pro-alliance (like Ashley).

I wouldn't say he does, considering that he actively has to ask why the turians and krogan are hostile to one another.

I think he's wondering why the Krogan would b unwilling to help fight the Reapers. Or the Batarians. He knows they don't like us, but his point of view has him seeing the Reapers as the big threat. He can't really see why they'd be unwilling to help fight.

They should have indicated it as such.

He has his moments of insight. He's a much smarter and stronger character than people give him credit for.

Yep.

Physical strength sure does beat out biotics, James. And that's why you aren't a leader.

He isn't pro-anything. Or against anything, for that matter.

In fact, other than "durrrr...", he doesn't give much of an opinion on anything (anything worth discussing, anyway).

Ahh I walked into a hatefest it seems.

Anyways, bringing it back on topic, I actually wish I hated a few of the characters, it might have made it easier to let go of Shepard and the story. Unfortunately I pretty much like all of the characters.

I can't stand Liara either.

She needs to learn how to mind her own damn business. I would have been fine with my body being handed over to the Collectors.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I wouldn't have needed the crucible if I was a badass human reaper.

Tbf, wasn't one of James' roles in 3 to ask the questions that new players might have been thinking? probably why he sounds a bit thick at times. He was ok. Not great but not bad.
Only squaddies I can say I didn't like were Ash and Jack (in 2. She grew on me in3.)

As I said, I think he's more perplexed about the Krogan not looking past the big picture. As for the Batarians, it's never really stated at all about them. I don't even think I remember him saying anything about the Batarians past asking where their fleet was once on Menae. He probably should have realized that the Batarian Hegemony had been wiped out, but given that hardly any news past scattered refugee reports was coming through, it's likely he (and a majority of the other sentients of the galaxy) simply had no idea what had happened to the Batarians.

As for that conversation, it's nothing but a puff fest on James' part. He's not taking it seriously, which is why I side with him. It's good natured fun.

And James is a leader. He's actually a very good one. He wouldn't have been offered N7 training otherwise.
He had to make very difficult decision that got many of his crew killed, already after many had already perished under Collector attack.

Which is why I said it should have been indicated as such. If it were made clear that James was unaware of something, it would make sense that he would express it.

For all we know, Shepard's shared all his dirty little secrets with James since they're apparently BFF's on Earth.

I don't mind good-natured fun. It's when he's actively making himself look retarded to the point where it makes me doubt his ability to interact with normal people that it's being taken a little too far.

And James is a leader. He's actually a very good one. He wouldn't have been offered N7 training otherwise.

This goes back to point 1, but with different details. If James is worthy of being a leader (or anything substatial), whoever it was that wrote his backstory should have made it clear (or at least suggested it). All we hear about are his failures, never any successes. Minus the glaring failures, it's the same problem with the VS becoming a Spectre (Ashley, anyway).

Kaidan at least has the benefit of leading his own battalion of biotics before becoming a Spectre, as well as his (assuming he survived Virmire) escapades with Shepard in ME1. We know what he's done, so we have an idea of why he would be considered for such a high-ranking position.

For James, as we have is... He f**ked up. Pretty badly. That's about it. Oh, and his dad was a druggy. Those are literally the only things we know about him before ME3.

God, how I hate that kind of handholding.

Seriously, if you think of jumping into part 3 of a franchise that is known to have a complex lore and strongly depends on the events of the previous titles, you should expect that you have to do some catching up.

It's not like Vega helps much anyway. I have first-hand experiece: I ignored Mass Effect for years because I never play shooters and didn't even take a look at it, I needed a friend of mine to tell me that it's actually a cool RPG. The first thing of Mass Effect that I played was the ME3 demo. I watched the intro and.. well...

Who's that kid? Should I know him?
What am I doing here?
Who is that Anderson person?
*meets Ashley*
You know me? Well that's cool, I have no idea who you are. Or what my character is talking to you about.
*seemingly important meeting*
Hey wait... what's the "Sol Relay?" and what should be behind there that you lost contact with? What's a "Relay" in the first place?

Kaidan in ME 1:  Standing in the galley for all missions except where I didn't have enough crew to not take him.  Does he have dialog that isn't "I have a headache"?  Neither one of them have anything in game to suggest they are worthy candidates to be Spectres, except that they were on the Normandy in ME 1, and they both show up in ME 2, proclaiming their superiority.  A trend that is followed up on Mars, after demonstrating their switch to Chaotic Stupid in the shuttle bay, asking what they're doing when they are standing right beside you when Anderson reinstates you and orders you to the Citadel.  So if that's Spectre material, I'm resigning, because frankly, that seems like just barely qualified for the Special Olympics to me.Image IPB

I don't actually mind the idea of jumping into the story with no clue of what's going on and having to figure it out as you go along. I started with ME3 as well and the entire first hour I kept wondering who the hell these "Cerberus" people were and why they were important.

That said, I still have no clue what purpose James is supposed to serve, most of the conversations you have with him he just talks about himself. I guess they needed you to have at least one male squaddie given the worst possible scenario?

The only time I remember James asking questions to help new players was on Menae.  Does he actually continue in this role beyond that?

In-universe, everybody did their part when it came to the mission(s). Also, between ME1 and 3, Kaidan has leadership over a battalion of biotic soldiers.

Not to mention that there's a f**king fully-voiced codex right in the pause menu.
