That's rather presumptuous considering the story takes place 170 years into the future.

not really, in fact i'd argue the fact advances my point even more. seeing how birthrate in developed countries is far lower than the developing countries.

How come Ambassador Udina and Ambassador Osoba arn't native Swedish people? That's an outrage! I have to object! There wasn't a single swede in the whole game! Not even an evil vilain that you kill a few seconds later!

J/K

I don't think there are any grounds for this topics exitance. Also a lot of the NPC's you meet are Asian or they have got a bit of an asian heritage. Emily wong Asian no matter where she grew up, Al-jilani is middle eastern...
Kasumi Goto, Keiji Okuda, Fai Dan, Maeko Matseo, Samesh Bhatia, Ethan Jeong, Kai Lang... Ambassador Udina and Ambassador Osoba.
Almost looks like Mass effect humanity is run by Asians Posted Image

Then we got that French refugee in the holding area to serve as a counter weight Posted Image And of course some supposedly British people in London, which is entierly unexpected Posted Image

The french sushi restaurant in the Citadel DLC was pretty funny, the turian might wonder, are you sure this dextro fish is genuine french sushi? I want the real thing!

First there was Pax Romana. Then Pax Mongolica. Next, Pax Britannica.

And now the current era - Pax Americana. A single culture dominating world development. America. And America is white. The British were white. I'm not quite sure how white the Romans were, but there's no question that Rome and Greece before it are considered the birthplace for many of the ideals we associate with the Western World.

As for the Mongols...twice as bright, half as long I guess. A couple of times as big as Rome ever was, but didn't leave near as much of a legacy. Didn't last near as long.

It's worth noting according to TV Tropes, Mass Effect averted this trope...

Averted in Mass Effect. Almost every human being is in a rather tanned range due to over a century of interbreeding (and both prominent human leaders are quite dark-skinned). Mass Effect 2's Jacob is one of few characters who don't look multiracial, and he's definitely black. The names are also all over the place: Donnel Udina is a man of African descent with an Irish first name (Donnel is derived from Domnhail, meaning, appropriately "world ruler") and Russian last name.

I think the Mongols generally favored adopting local customs over imposing their own culture on their subjects, so were assimilated pretty quickly.  They should have included a Mongolian NPC in the game though, just to hear the VAs fumble with the pronunciation.

With the Mongols it worked both ways, they spread some ideas, they picked up ideas of locals but mostly they wanted wealth and status.
You know, gold, horses, servants, women. That kind of stuff. Then there was the second mongol horde that was driven by a mongol turned muslim. Who wanted to repeat Khans conquest but also establish a muslim empire or something like that.
I did read a little bit about it and watched a documentary about it but, I wouldn't call myself an expert on the subject.

My Earthborn Shepard, Nadia, is from Iran. And my other Earthborn Shepard is from the Phillippines. Do those count?

Well the game is made in Canada.... Kind of like asking why JRPGs don't have a lot of black guys.

Anyways, as people have pointed out, there are Asian characters in ME.

Good catch. Also, the president of the United North American States' last name is Huerta.

That could be interpreted as racism though, there certaintly isn't a shortage of white characters in those games.  Bias against blacks in Asian societies runs deep and can be quite vicious.

I actually thought there were quite a few non-white characters, enough to make it more than a token effort to have them there. The looks were constrained by engine issues, but were reasonably well done regardless imo.

It's explained in the game and in the books.

It's the same reasoning for why there's very few natural blondes left.

That's assuming that East Asian countries stay undeveloped, so to speak, for the next 170 years. China and Japan both have birthrates considerably lower than the US. (Japan is actually lower than 1.33 kids per women, I think.) And while India's is still high, it's been dropping like a bloody rock the past decade.

This should be considered. Populance growth is hard to predict, so the apparant lack of asians isn't quite as big as one might think.
Also, we really have A LOT of people of mixed heritage in the games. The only oddity about them is that the majority of them has english family names.

Indeed.

I'd say Kaidan is a mostly Asian/Hispanic mix. He's from British Columbia, after all.

If you're going that route then, why the lack of african americans (to be politically correct)? If I remember right, Jacob, Ronald Taylor, Anderson, and Brynn Cole (I think) the only african americans in the entire trilogy. They show more asians than african americans in the trilogy. I might be forgetting a couple, but you get my point.

I suspect if we could get a hold of bioware demographics that the game reflects those numbers. Is it really a surprise that a Canadian-based (largely English and French) gaming company is predominantly "white." Personally, I thought Asians were fairly well represented...if any racial group has a complaint it would be the "blacks."

I worked at a research organization for a decade that was very ethnically diverse with large numbers of Chinese, Indians, and Russians. I always found it interesting that these groups tended to be very clicky...hanging out together at lunch, socializing during off hours, and talking in their native languages. It has little to do with racism and almost everything to do with culture. People like their comfort zones and tend to gravitate to people with like interests and similar backgrounds. One of the Researchers was from my native state of Wisconsin (and a Packers fan)...and we're both married to women from other countries. Is it any surprise that we became friends? Try not to make every issue about race or racism, because the idiots that subscribe to such ideals are by far the minority.
