It's the same reason that everyone seems to be from Canada, England, and Australia in the 22nd century.  Americans and the land mass of the USA has also vanished by then.

A--- is coz Australia, USA and Canadians are awesome.

B-- usa landmass didn't vanish, they are just trading blocks for space exploration efforts, nothing is every mentioned if it indeed simply vanished or not. There is a North American Union yes, but if EU is any indication, simply changing the name of a landmass doesn't exactly mean everyone will associate themselves as north americans above canadian , mexican or american. It be a nice day but not likely. Either way can't say.

Kaidan appears to be Hungarian and Japanese by way of Canada, and Traynor appears to be Anglo-Indian.

Isn't "-enko" Ukrainian?

But anyway, being that "Kaidan" isn't pronounced as a Japanese name (instead as a variant of Kayden/Caden/Cayden), I don't think it's meant to be Japanese at all. I mean, I dunno what characters you would use to recreate that name phonetically, but I'd guess it'd start with 凱.

At any rate, seeing as part of his family is (probably) from Singapore, I'd guess he's huáyì or Baba-Nyonya.

What?

Canada and the United States merged and formed the North American Union. Both Canadians and Americans are technically from the same country now. People likely still associate themselves with their respective homes (judging by the way Kaidan says "my people"). Americans still call themselves as much, and Canadians still identify as Canadians.

Nothing disappeared.

There is no mention of them becoming the same country. They became a trading block to afford extra solar colonization nothing more.
The only piece of info is regarding the economic obstacle that is extra solar colonization. nationality, citizenship political shifts we do not know.

Aside from it we know there was a 2nd civil war. But we are all the same people... HIGHLY doubt it.

The political organization of Earth in Mass Effect is most likely irrelevant, since there probably isn't much time for petty international conflicts with all of these alien powers to deal with. Also, Reapers.

It's suggested the British Samatha Traynor is ethnically south asian. She gets mildly offended at the party when
Kaidan Alenko assumes she knows something about Curry...

Kaidan, by the way, is the Japanese word for Ghost Story...

There's Fai Dan, Ethan Jeong, Emily Wong, Maeko Matsuo, Samesh and Nirali Bhatia, Aresh Agdashloo, Derek Izunami, Shu Qian, Kasumi Goto, Keiji Okuda, Kai Leng, and probably a few others I'm forgetting...

Also, Shepard can be any ethnicity...

To be fair, Chicken Tikka Masala is a contender with "Fish and Chips" for national dish in the UK.

Vancouver and Seattle became one giant city.

This, plus the fact that Canada/U.S. is called the "North American Union" highly suggest a merging between Canada and the States.

I think Kaidan mentioned something about Chicago once but I'm not sure.  Could have been referring to Chicago, Western Cape, South Africa though.  James also said New York while on Menae.:innocent:

And again you omit what I said.

They are an union I am not saying they aren't. but there is a diffence between mergin countries and forming an economic partnership. A trading block and a merge are two different things.

Like the European Union being a trading block to pool in resources to combat outside factors they have not lost their individual intentity as countries even after decades and decades.

To add to your point however, we know is not only US and Canda but also Mexico...
So without more info we can't say anything but head cannons.

If you want my own opinion however I think they did merge as a single unified nation... my ONLY clue is the 2nd american civil war. I doubt we would raise hell over uniting with Canada... however, being forcefully merged with Mexico??... now that I can belief would cause a second civil war.

She/he's right.  The "Second American Civil War" is started because of this merger with Canada and Mexico.  I guess Seattle ceased to exist since it is called Vancouver in ME3.  Go Vancouver Seahawks!

And this has to so with America disappearing... How?

Again, Seattle still exists (which debunks your notion right there). James also grew up on the Pacific coast (which, along with his reminiscing of deserts, might mean he grew up in California).

James was lamenting that the Reapers were in New York, not that NY didn't exist anymore.

....again we dont know if they actually merge. PLEASE give me the codex link stating that the North American Union is in fact a country and NOT a trading block?

If they didn't merge (of some kind), then why are Seattle and Vancouver conjoined as 1 city now?

Ok, first can you please point me to a source for that, I admit I do not recall that.

2nd, there are cities called sister cities after they grow too big. It has happended before, it happens today even, Mexican American Border is indication. They are basically the same city, but doesn't mean they belong to the same nation.

Regardless, read my previous post regarding my OWN opinion based on nothing but the civil war. I think they merged as a country, but I can't proove it.

Joining with Canada is nothing to kill over.. being joined ot Mexico... now that Is something many would pick up their rifles to fight against.

So you'd prefer the Galaxy to look like Asia?

In reality; practically all movies, TV, video-games star white or black people as most of the characters (mainly white). That's because these shows and games are western, where most people are white or black. If Asians had made Mass Effect, there would be essentially no white people and everyone would be Asian.

It's the way it is.

Actually, even Asian video games/ anime, etc.. tend to have mostly non-Asians in my experience. Even if the characters may be culturally Asian, the whole non-Asian look is really popular.

Well that's pretty understandable, most Japanese pop culture is essentially Western in character, and most of what is produced in the other Asian countries is derivative of the Japanese stuff.

I believe it was in the art book for ME3 that said that Seattle and Vancouver joined together.

http://masseffect.wi...American_States

Regardless, the United North American States is its own country. The U.S., Canada, and Mexico merged together.

And I think this was done both for in game and out of game reasons.

In game, to show the unity and progession of the nation-states into a continental super-state.

This is my own reason, but out of game, because I think BW realized how some people view Canada.

I won't lie. I for one hold a very.... colonial attitude towards Canada as an American.

Don't know if I'm using the word right.

I have a superiority complex towards Canadians. Call it bad, call it cultural cringe, call it narrow, call it me buying into the American Zeitgeist too much for an otherwise worldly and balanced person.

It's there, and it's a part of me.
