 Hi,

Have played ME 1-3 straight through many times now, but with Citadel being released as the final ME3 expansion, I'm going for one final 'hoorah'.

Any way, I want certain members to die in the suicide mission (Thane, Kasumi, Legion, Samara, Miranda) and others to survive.  I know that by not upgrading the ship, you can easily kill a few of these, but I like my ship fully upgraded before launching the final assault (I'm not totally reckless).  I have used the ME2 Suicide Mission calculator thingy, but it's quite hard (if it's even possible) to kill everyone I want to and yet ensure that all the others survive without neglecting to upgrade my ship.

So, here's my question.  The ME2 SM Calc seems to think that I can just NOT recruit Thane and Samara (obviously Kasumi is optional).  Is this true, and more importantly, if I don't recruit them, will they show up in ME3, because I don't want them to!!!  Sorry to any Thane/Samara fans, but they're not particularly important to me (I'm a Garrus/Tali kinda guy with a soft spot for Mordin).  I'll be annoyed if I don't recruit him and Thane still shows up in the hospital and acts like we're old buddies - I saved Kirahhe in ME1 for a reason, I don't need Thane!

I want my last play through to be memorable and I've already done a 'save everybody' playthrough.  Thanks!

As far as I know, any one you do not recruit will not show up in Mass Effect 3. I cannot confirm from experience, as I have not imported those particular decisions into ME3 yet (I will at some point).

It will be memorable.... For all the wrong reasons!:P

Or is this one heavy risk your unwilling to take?

You should be alright just never recruiting them. Legion is also optional, to my knowledge, just never activate him.

If you just want to wacth people die, the easiest way would be to skip Kasumi and don't activate Legion. Then:
1) Send Miranda through the vents.
2)Choose the wrong biotic for the bubble (Jacob) and have Thane on your team so he gets eaten by the swarm.
3) Choose Samara for the second fire team leader.

Another option would be:
1)Skip Kasumi and choose Morinth over Samara in her loyalty mission (and get the joy of seeing Morinth as a Banshee at some point in ME3).
2) Lose Miranda in the tunnels and Thane to the swarm as above.
3) Choose Legion as your second fire team leader.

Yet another option would be to skip Miranda's loyalty mission and either skip Samara's loyalty or choose Morinth. Then:
1) Lose Kasumi/Legion in the vents by choosing the wrong fire team leader.
2) Lose Thane to the swarm as above
3) If you have an unloyal Samara, send her to escort the survivors.
4) Pick Legion/Kasumi (whoever didn't die in the vents) as the second fire team leader.
5) Take unloyal Miranda with you to fight the last boss.
Any of those should get you the results you want. The problem with losing some people on purpose (to me) is that Shepard often looks like an idiot for the choices he makes. If you can live with that, go for it.
Now explain to me why you want Miranda, Samara and Thane dead but not Jacob??!! Posted Image

To each their own of course...

...but I must know why you want these characters to die?

I figured out a way to recruit everyone and kill off just Legion, Thane and Kasumi using the calculator and yet still fully upgrade my ship.

1. Kasumi into the vents with an unloyal Miranda leading the fireteam.
2. Unloyal Samara on the biotic field with Legion (not loyal) and Tali (loyal) as my squad mates.
3. Garrus (loyal) as fireteam leader, Thane (unloyal) escorting surving crew back to the normandy.
4. Garrus and Tali (both loyal) on the final fight.

@CDR David Shepard - as for why I want them dead? I think it makes the experience more gritty and realistic to have a few die (especially for a ruthless earthborn renegade :-D). Why them three in particular:

Legion - I like, but at the end of the day he's JUST a geth and the hologram that they replace him with in ME3 is pretty much the same guy. Just means I won't feel as bad when I side with the Quarians in ME3.

2. Thane - I just didn't like him in ME2. I usually get him late on and don't really have much time to 'bond' with him :-). I liked him ALOT more in ME3 when he saves your ass, but Shepard wouldn't know that in number 2 would he?  Also gives Kirrahe abit more showtime.

3. Kasumi - is just a bit one-dimensional, as is Zaeed. Just one way dialogue. Difference is, Zaeed's a badass cockney with a gun called Jessie and Kasumi isn't!

I fully support your plan. I've been considering a playthrough where I intentionally let several crew members die. Mostly because I wanted to remove the characters whose ME3 appearances were so disappointing that they would be better off not included at all (in my opinion).

Still, Jacob has to be at the top of that list...right?

I do this now. It makes the game more interesting, after many play-throughs of having everyone survive.

My last male Shep, romancing Miranda, choose Miri over Jack when they argued and lost Jack's loyalty. Then I put Jack in the bubble, which cost me Thane. And then Jack died holding the line.

Jacob never survives my games anymore, not since I saw him in ME3. I either send him into the vents or skip his loyalty mission and he dies as the second fire team leader.

The only thing you ever get from Jacob is a really nasty splinter from his wooden performance.
