On my first play through I felt that Duncan had this "cultish zealot" trait about him and I believed that he might be the central antagonist.  I'm on my 3rd play through and now I'm getting attached to this character.  I guess the character design on Duncan is so interesting I'm having a hard time accepting

***SPOILERS***
his death
**END OF SPOILERS***

Does anyone else feel like this, that he would be a great antagonist or a great character in general?

He is a fine character, and he pulled an Obi-Wan on us, the bastard.

He would probably not have lasted much more than a couple of years tops anyways.

It is sad he 'dies' (spite we haven't seen his dead body anywhere) I liked his voice the most, great story telling voice, lol.

Man, I hope shows up in the next installment.  I bet he's gonna be pissed off though.

Oh yeah. When I first got the game, I couldn' t decide what I wanted to RP, since this was a vastly different world from the typical "upstart human, mystical elf, stalwart dwarf" high fantasy I am used to. So I played through all the origins, both male and female, before I progressed anybody past the arrival at Ostigar. Duncan impressed the hell out of me in each and every one. I took every opportunity to talk to him (and there are more in some of the origins than others). He's a great character.

He seemed to have so much invested in him, in terms of character development, that I just knew he was bound to be sticking around for a while. And I was totally and completely shocked at how early he met his fate. The origins set a dark tone, and the events at Ostagar cemented it, at least for me, for the rest of the game. That might have been the intent; if so, it was very effective.

Well - there were clues if you count the absence of certain things as clues....

*RtO Spoilers*

We found his sweet daggers on the body of the Ogre he pwned during the cutscene, but no body... and there were lots of other bodies around - skinned bodies, charred bodies, naked-and-strung-up bodies.... So if you like to read things into LACK of things then one might think there is a possibility that we may see some incarnation of Duncan sometime.....

Perhaps he's just chilling out somewhere: aimostudio.com/ljplug/da/duncanciggie.jpg

I found Duncan to be an interesting and ambiguous character. I have felt everything from fuzzy warmth to cold hatred towards him (and that's just on a single City Elf playthrough). And reading The Calling offers even more depth.

Yup, Duncan is one of my favorite characters. Incidentally, Obi-Wan Kenobi is on that list, too.

@ SarEnyaDor  - Darn, that post is so tempting... Must. Resist.

I'm actually sort of relieved to hear that. From a metagaming perspective, it gives me hope of more Duncan, even a twisted Duncan.  From a personal standpoint,  I'm besotted with this game, and have a pretty solid emotional investment in it while I am playing. I was somewhat dreading the repercussions of finding Duncan's body, no matter how it played out -- if Bioware struck the right note, it would either make me cry or ****** me off, and I'm full up on game-related emotional binging at the moment, thanks. If it didn't strike the right note, it would sour the game a bit for me, I'm sure.  Now I all I have to worry about is finding Cailan. :)

I really liked Duncan. First I liked his style. He has this typical mentor-look and a fantastic story-teller voice. He has also a good background when you read "The Calling". As someone said, he pulled a Obi-Wan and it felt pretty much the same loosing him this early at Dragon Age as seeing Obi Wan killed by Darth Wader. I always used each and every chance to talk to him during the origins stories.

The thing I loved about Duncan and Riodran was their calm, but powerful appearance, with eyes clearly showing their resignation as they accepted their fate and duty as Grey Wardens.

I must admit I was hoping that at least Riodran would stay for a bit longer. After loosing Duncan he seemed like a sign of hope that the Wardens aren't dead.

You will see Duncan again. His fate is unanswered and too big of a plot hook for Awakenings to be ignored.

Especially seeing as how the central antagonist of Awakenings can accelerate the taint in Grey Wardens, turning them into intelligent darkspawn.

Besides, he narrates the whole game. Even the end.

There's no way Duncan is dead, the Beard grants him immortality.

Duncan was already near to The Calling and having to go suicide in the Deep Roads. From a dramatic standpoint, Duncan had to leave the PC's field of view the same way that Gandalf and Ben Kenobi did. Note that neither of them left their stories entirely...and with no body in RtO plus a sentient-and-independent Darkspawn (the Architect) as a principal character in Awakening, I don't think we've seen the last of Duncan.

I'll also be interested to see whether the lore variant in Dragon Age Journeys: The Deep Roads (Flash 2-D game) gets hooked into Awakening. [[spoiler for Journeys]] In that game we learn of a Hurlock Emissary that can speak and has some sort of blue glowing thing on its head...which (glowing thing) it turns out came to the Deep Roads with an older Grey Warden. But apparently *that* speaking/planning Emissary is separate from the Architect...

There certainly seems to be enough lore unexplored that when combined with some interesting plot there should be several more interesting games left to do...

I think this is an intentional cliff-hanger in regards to did he or didn't he die.

My conclusion..seeing him there and darkspawn coming toward him, then whoosh with the weapon, and blankness.....my conclusion or assumption at that point was..death.

But now that I think more about it,  it could be very well he's alive, but not as we know him.

Guess we'll find out eventually.

Seriously. Duncan is a badass.

Fun Fact: Duncan is Chuck Norris' great-great-great-great grandfather.

Duncan probably died, but I don't think he was that nice person. The way he recruits you in some instances is like he's taking advantage of your situation. Example, to save you and your mother (Human Noble) he demands that you join the Gray Wardens. He could save you without such demands but for him the Blight urged him to get anyone by any means necessary.

I quite understand his reasons, but he a very gray char (which is ironic being a gray warden).

It's true; he obviously isn't a completely clean soul... but doesn't that show what is takes to be a successful Warden? Your mission isn't to be good, moral or perfect. It's to save Ferelden from the Darkspawn at any cost. I think that Duncan comes across as something of an opportunist (leaning to the moral side of things), and is merely doing what he believes to be right to achieve the ultimate goal of ending the Blight.

He's a really deep character, so seeing him die (let's assume that until shown otherwise) was a surprise, to say the least...

Well the voice of Duncan can still be used, spite the character is dead. Would just be weird if they used his voice, but not for Duncan.
