He's a famous person, he's obligated to be a tool.
He's a tool even in excess of usual celebrity tools. A super ginormous unfailingly toolish tool.

But that means he has connections to the Templars. Perhaps he is still alive but manipulating our minds with a piece of eden?

Dale was infected.
Human surrounded by enemies.
Dwarf noble left to die in the deep roads.
Dwarf common sentenced to death.
City elf about to be executed.
Mage about to become a tranquil.
He could have demanded each of them to join by the right of conscription before they were in a desperate position (sometimes weakening his position for the future, like making Bryce Cousland a foe).
Nothing comes for free. Only Jory was a questionable recruit right from the start and his death can be seen as a crime (I really didn't care seeing him killed. GW are more important than this deserter). He just joined the Wardens without being in a bad position. Alister was unhappy were he was. Daveth was to be executed too.
I don't think Duncan pushed it too hard. He took those who had nothing to loose. Fair deal. Jory was just written so that you had to feel that was an injustice. Wife, kids, a nice guy, just to afraid to do what was needed and then he gets killed... boohoo... worst written character in the game, just added for the effect.

Duncan isn't exploiting your situation as much as he could. He didn't force anyone into the order who had a real chance to survive his situation anyhow.

No one said anything about my Mages becoming Tranquil. Ever.
Then again, I did turn Jowan in to Irving both times, just because his whining annoyed me so much...

Anyways, did anyone notice that, in each Origin Story, and Ostagar, Duncan Dual-wields, but that in the Fade (Broken Circle), he uses a Shield?

Well, since it's not really him...
He does have a shield stored in Denerim, though, so I suppose he can use one.

Duncan is awesome.
Same guy did the voice for Splinter in the old old TMNT cartoons.
That makes him doubly awesome in my book.

I have more sympathy for Jory- because he really got the raw end of the deal. Do you realize why Duncan killed Jory? Because if Jory lived word could spread about the Joining being lethal. If people knew that recruitment numbers would definitely drop.
To Duncan the ends justify the means- stopping the Blight at all costs- even murder.
Would you join your countrys military if that was their recruitment process?

Very well done. I wonder if Bioware did that intentionally, or if it was just a modelling accident.

Duncan =/= awesome. Seriously, he goes around "recruiting" people to be Grey Wardens but he doesn't tell you 1) You might die during the joining 2) your lifespan will be shortened to just 30 more years after the joining 3) If you back out of the joining I will stab you, yet I conscripted you to be here and you had no choice so tough ******. I understand when Riordhan says: "but there must always BE Grey Wardens." just don't expect me to have a fanboi love fest for the guy.

It's intentional. You can find Duncan's shield late in the game as a gift for alistair.
