It's an american poll, of course it's first world problems. Had Bank of America won, it still would've been "first world problems".

Seems to be a lot of that going around. I thought this thread was about whether EA deserved the title of "Worst Company in America", not "EA is a bad company".

Yeah. I'm not going to get too invested in defending EA and its actions lately... Sim City is certainly worth criticizing, and I'm not terribly fond of the tone of that PR statement in response to the Consumerist 'nomination'... but compared to Apple's treatment of Chinese laborers and BoA's treatment of American homeowners, just no.

I could play the tiniest devil's advocate and say, in terms of the number of people who might identify as "consumers" of a product (so sorry to the chinese workers, and do homeowners really consider themselves "consumers" of homes?) and the percent of those affected by perceived or actual shoddy business practices, EA could be up there legitimately. If you take this as being a poll of consumers ruled only by self-interest in assigning which company is least 'consumer friendly,' perhaps.

Still, if you wanted an anywhere near accurate representation of America you'd want a randomly sampled survey of "consumers", not a self selecting poll. That only represents the internet in all its whimsy and grossly inflated sense of presence when it comes to online 'movements' and trends.

I guess we have to coin a new phrase: zeroth world problems.

Oh God, no. I swear EA would just be obliterated if that happens.

I doubt it.  People bash EA; people still buy EA products.  People say they're going to boycott; a small minority actually do.  Most people who attack Microsoft still use Windows even if OS X would suit them fine.  People who speak out against WalMart still shop there, sometimes eagerly when there's a nice sale going.

The Magic: the Gathering community is so belligerent and resistant to every new set that comes out that they have a saying: "Wizard's [the game developer] could put twenty dollar bills in packs of cards and people would complain because they were folded."  The game continues to grow, and a month later people who complained will be touting a deck with a ton of new cards.

No one who plays World of Warcraft actually likes World of Warcraft.  It's a paradox.

In the end, most people are just full of hot air.  Though I like to go around these parts calling people children, many of the people who I'm wrong about will move on and get over it, and the ones I am right about will eventually be distracted by something shiny.

Congrats EA! You've overcome a lot, ignored all the naysayers, and won a tremendous award.

I'm surprised people still buy their products. I was even cringing when Brian Fargo jumped on their Origin/Kickstarter offer.

You know, I'm a bit skeptical about the Golden Poo award or any similar 'Worst Company' award for Bioware because, well...

I can't say that I've ever heard of Bioware routinely sending large numbers of people into places with the expectation of them being shot at. While paying them well below median wage. And not paying overtime, despite reserving the right and frequently using employees for twelve-hour shifts, seven days a week, for a year, plus back-to-back-to-back shifts as context demands.

Now, granted, maybe I'm missing some of the horror stories as well, but I'm pretty sure Bioware doesn't have an informal system of corporal or other non-legal punishments either, and I don't think they can dock your pay for months simply for losing workplace items. (You might get fired, but that's a different thing.)

And, well, there's a distinct lack of people trying to kill you when you work at Bioware. Flamers and trolls are annoying, sure, but it sure beats a workplace environment where your harshest critics lob high explosive at your home and try and kill you in your sleep.

Just saying: whatever Bioware is, it could probably be a lot worse quite easily. Which, to me, would argue against it being the 'worst' company.

(But then, I guess the the award isn't about the worst place to work.)

You think they'll win it again next year with Dragon Age 3? :D

Doubtful.

Why is Steam better than Origin, anyway?  I use both and I don't see anything that Steam does better.

Customer service.

Your kidding right?

Last few times I used there service I had to wait a week for an auto reply telling me to try things I already did.  Steam is still blocking me from playing 3 or 4 games I purchased off of it but they refuse to even acknowladge that this is happenning.  I had to go straight to the developer and he showed me a way to.... well... see if Steam was the culprit.  Games ran fine after I tried this method but when I e-mailed Steam with the proof they threatened to ban my account meaning I would lose all my games.

I would save previous interactions, then tell them exactly what I think of that, meaning if they ever try to threaten me again with account termination for talking to them about a problem they caused, I'd make the case public and sue them for fraud.
And if they did just that, threatening me again, I'd do just that.

I did try to go higher but they stated they are within there right to terminate my account claiming that the method I used to prove Steam was preventing me from playing the games broke the TOS contract you agree to for using Steam.

Well, were they in their right to prevent you frm playing your games too? Where's that covered in their TOS?

The ultimatum would be easy. Either Steam fixes the problem it's causing, or you do it. And if they don't fix the problem for those games, it's either a refund, or a lawsuit.

I don't know where you're from, but at least here in Germany I could do that easily. A call to our customer protection agency and they'd file a official request that if not heeded will cause that agency to file a lawsuit in your favour.

And either way, any TOS that allows someone to withhold legally purchased items is illegal, no matter if you signed it or not. So even if your in prime capitalist USA, if Steam was not helping you solve the issue of those games not working, they MUST give you a refund as it's a defunct product, or if they are actively preventing you from using those games you purchased, it's fraud. Clear as day.

If you are unsure how to proceed in such matters, do a search in the internet's legal sections, there you'd most likely find out what you need.

There's a difference between haters and dissatisfied customers. Let's hope you can tell the difference between the two.

EA said "We can do better" in 2008, and for a while they were. But now they're back to their old tricks again. I don't want to see EA go under, even if I don't like the way the company does business. All I want is to be treated fairly and for EA to not take advantage their customers every chance they get. But the problem is I know that's not going to happen. This acknowledgement from Peter Moore is a wasted effort because I know EA is going to continue to treat their customers unfairly and take advantage where they can.

One could argue the SimCity debacle. Even as their servers were overloaded and knowing they could not handle the load, preventing people from even being able to play, sales were not suspended. They were working to fix said broken product, but they never stopped selling copies of that broken product.

The same thing could be said of ME3 after they announced the Extended Cut. They acknowledged that their endings were not complete enough, that they would finish and make the ending available for free, but they never discontinued sales of said incomplete story before the "fix" was in place.

SimCity wasn't a broken product, I would argue. The game is not the server. The game was fine. The servers were not.

ME3 was definitely not a broken product. An ending that people don't like, i.e. not pandering, is not in any way a definition of "broken."

The other chap congratulated us on crushing the competition.  It was subtle, but I was joking that we could have crushed them more so, and that "we could do better."

Mostly I have been taking this in stride.  On various social media I proudly shared the successful title defense.

Ah we don't think your a shill Allan. At least I don't. /brownie points

But understand I hate some of the arguments people are making. They are pretty.. loopy.

For instance, if I were to be a douche to everyone, constantly sabotaging their emotional stability for no apparent reason other than personal amusement and/or sadism, that would make me bad, correct? Or at least not good.

But if someone sad to me, "You're a bad person!" And I said, "YOU HAVE NO SENSE OF WHAT BAD IS! PERSON X KILLED MILLIONS! THEY ARE SO MUCH WORSE THAN I EVER COULD BE! AND YOU ARE PISSING AND MOANING ABOUT SOMEONE HURTING YOUR DAMN FEELINGS! People are starving and you are whining about a little inconveniece!" /hyperbole

Would that make me less of a douche? Doubtful. If anything it'd make me more of a douche for bringing up people's hardships  I'd otherwise ignore if it weren't for the sheer convenience of justifying my douchery. It's really not a good argument.

This isn't the equivalent of someone saying, "You're a bad person!" This is, fairly literally, someone saying, "You're worse than Hitler! Oh, and Stalin. And Marilyn Manson!"

I wonder if it's those dumbasses who are still getting worked up over Dragon Age two and Mass Effect three's ending. They seem to be the majority of the people who get worked up about EA these days.

Yeah, that went over my head. It's probably best to take it in stride. Perhaps Peter should have done the same. Actions speak louder than words. I would like to see EA make the changes rather than talk about them.

I don't think it's quite that extreme actually.

It's a poll where, in my opinion, gamers are typically well organized and highly likely to see this type of thing, and they use it as a vehicle to register their disdain. The principal reason for this is because of the gaffes EA has had in recent past.

I agree that using the Consumerist poll is probably not superbly productive, it is likely a reasonably higher profile than just complaining here. I'm sure the Consumerist loved it though, as they even felt like going toe to toe with Moore.
