I installed this game on my son's computer. The game loads but where there should be buttons that say Options, create new character and so on, there is no writting on the buttons. You can highlight the buttons and click on them to bring the other screens up but there are no writings on any of the menu buttons.

Any one have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.Image IPB

Please look carefully at the warning label on the back of the game box, where the system requirements are listed.  Wrap your memory around what it says, and make a good comparison of what you are using as a video card with what the requirements are.

If you bought the game without even knowing what your machine has as ints internal compenent inventory, the article I will link you to tells you how to find out, and gives you a few pointers about game playing PCs, as compared to more mundane computers that were not designed for gaming:

social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/509580

Make the comparison, or if you downloaded a digital copy and ignored the warning label on the download page, here is what it said (with my edit about the video cards):

Windows XP Minimum Specifications
OS: Windows XP with SP3
CPU: Intel Core 2 Single (or equivalent) running at 1.6Ghz or greater
AMD 64 (or equivalent) running at 2.0Ghz or greater
RAM: 1 GB or more
Video: ATI Radeon X850 256MB or greater (either this is wrong)
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT 128MB or greater (or this one is wrong)
DVD ROM (Physical copy)
20 GB HD space

(Note: IMO, the two video cards above should be the Radeon X800 Pro, and the Geforce 6800 GS, at least)

It is very likely that your compurter is just too old and too unsuitable for an upgrade, to have bought a game like this one for it.

There is a seldom-seen situation involving the Toolset that has been reported on a few occasions. If you have not been playing with that, you may have a greatly outdated video driver (or corrupted driver file). Do not rely on the Microsoft updates pages for a video driver. Get them from nVIDIA directly.

In order for the game to display the menu buttons' text, it uses functions that aren't provided by the generic Windows "PCI Video Driver", and in fact didn't even exist on old video cards from about 2003 (ATI's radeon 9n00s and anything older, as well as nVIDIA FXes and anything older).  It also has to have an uncorrupted copy of Dx9 (Direct3D) loaded.

For this to affect cards that do have the correct functionality, it's likely that both the Dx9 and the Drivers must be installed (reinstalled).

Ok, Thanks Gorath. I will try that this weekend and see what happens.
