I'm using Ar Pharazon's Cave Roofs, a set of placeables that you use to create ceilings for cave environments.  In order to use them, it was necessary for me to change them.  The originals have both top-facing and bottom-facing polygons, and I wanted only bottom-facing, because the top-facing ones were unnecessary and cause negative effects such as blocking the camera and obscuring the map.

Additionally, there were some stray polygons in separate smoothing groups, causing some unintended noticeable triangles, which I fixed by placing them all in a single smoothing group.

Finally, there were some unnecessary meshes, such as a walkmesh and a C3 collision.  This being made to be used as an environmental object, there would be no use for those meshes.  I removed them, but left the C2 collision because it seems to have use in selecting the object to move it in the toolset.  I saw no negative effects from these changes.

Now, a user has requested that I upload this altered version.  I agree that it would be of use to others and they should not have to redo what I've done here on their own copies, but some people frown on reuploading the bare resources instead of using them in a module as they were intended.  What is the general consensus of the community on whether it's okay or not okay to reupload a set of meshes with this kind of change?

As long as you're clear that the base is not your own work and you credit Ar Pharizon and link to the original, you're good as far as the Vault is concerned. Not sure on Nexus as the work was never there.

I should also mention that I'm currently attempting to contact Ar Pharazon. I think the ideal way to handle it would be if I can provide my fixes to him, and he can upload them to his own Vault entry as an alternate version.

I agree with this. Otherwise without his permission I don't think it appropriate that you release them.

Best if you can get permission, but if you give it a go and he/she doesn't reply, then I'd say upload them as a new entry with credit to him where credit is due. Credit yourself for making changes as well. In the end, the vault and the community is about sharing content. If an artist specifically states they don't want their contributions altered then I wouldn't touch them, otherwise, it is a "community" and so by default...

Does anyone know any contact info for the author aside from his Youtube account? That's where I sent a private message.

You can use the Vault email, assuming both that it works, and that the author provided an email for the account.

Good idea. I just tried it. Unfortunately, arpharazon@vaultnetwork.com bounced.

Make sure you upload a version to the nexus as well as the vault.

For me, that's automatic, but it's a good reminder to make.

Just a note, Vault email scripts are completely broken.
Not a thing I can do about it :-/

edit: Fwiw, his email on his account is invalid anyway :-P

You mean even the direct email to Maximus which used to work doesn't work anymore, or are you referring to the email form on the web site? I was using the direct method.

<not used to...>

Arpharazon never had a direct email account and the email he provided for his account is invalid, anyway.

Any of the emails that relied on the Vault looking up a user account and retrieving private email address do *not* work.

Okay. Not being privy to the internal workings of the Vault, I didn't know how email addresses worked there, or that it would work only for admins. Thank you for the information.
