Still, from what I've seen so far, they're staying too close to the familiar.
What were you expecting from a Dark Souls game?
New mechanics, mainly. That's something I think is a fair expectation with any sequel. Granted, there's plenty of time to learn more, but Dark Souls 2 hasn't presented anything new so far. Basically, if I weren't already intimately familiar with all the different areas you can visit from Dark Souls, a side by side comparison of gameplay could very well make me think they were from exactly the same game.
Hence why I hope to see more info down the line regarding new moves, spells, etc. I'd rather not see Dark Souls fall into the Assassin's Creed trap, aka Brotherhood and Revelations.
Well there are some new things one can gather from the gameplay video...
- You can deflect ranged weapons by attacking at the right time.
- You can quick-equip three items on each hand.
- There are more horror elements in the first half of the game and less enemies/action.
- More item interactions with the enviroment.
- Enemies are more reactive and dynamic.
- Torches are introduced.
- There are now more unique actions when dual wielding and generally you can combine the attacks together as combos. “Dual-wielding is a new feature in Dark Souls II,” Tanimura says. “Unique action can be performed by combining particular weapons.”
- Ranged combat has been improved and you have freedom of movement while using it.
- The enviroment can be destroyed by both enemies and the character.
- We observe enemies moving around more and the wyverns are perhaps the best example of that.
So it seems there are a few tweaks to the combat. Why change it altogether when it's already good? I'm hoping for maybe another two-three new build types. DkS for example added the pyromancy stuff. Hopefully DkS2 adds new "magical" skills.
Enemies generally seem to have improved AI (one of my major gripes about the original was poor enemy AI in some instances) and supposedly the world is meant to be even more open at least according to the below interview. In any case this looks nothing like how Brotherhood and Revelations is to AC2. We've got a new engine with no frame-rate issues, animations are entirely different and it's been assured by the developer that the content will be as much as the original.
http://www.forbes.co...ew-screenshots/I remember the developers talking about implementing boat riding. Quite frankly I'm glad the sequel hasn't changed a great deal. There's enough to identify it's a new game but you can still see it's Dark Souls at heart. I actually thought that Demon's Souls and Dark Souls weren't that vastly different (other than the fact that DkS had an open world and some new combat moves). DkSII seems different.
http://www.examiner....etails-revealed- Another new enemy is a Nazgul-like black rider, who apparently serves as an executioner of evil doers. Shibuya confirms there is some sort of morality system in the game.
- They are also exploring vehicles for the game, and the potential of players controlling them. By vehicles, think things like chariots and boats instead of cars.
I think all that it needs now is more features relating to covenants and more NPC interaction. Allow us to summon NPC's at will to help us. I mean it allows us to do this with other players...
Likely we'll hear more about other new features down the line. They don't want to release all information first-go do they?
