Why were you able to do countless playthroughs with ME2 but not ME3?

But seriously I did full playthroughs of each game of the trilogy exactly the same number of times. And incomplete playthroughs exactly the same time.

I played ME2 because i was so hooked on the ME universe, and every single playthrough i have done every single thing to do in the game, every DLC, scannede every single planet so that every clusters says 100% on the galaxy map, just so i could see what effects it had when i imported into ME3. Sadly most things only resulted in an email. and a lot of stuff isn't even mentioned.

I think it has a little to do with the anticipation of carrying all your decisions over to the next game.

However the other big problem is the fact that they stripped back the ability to roleplay as the Shep i'd played for 2 games and instead forced me to swallow large dollops of a new defined Shep. Coupled with this was the removal of neutral choices when dialogue options were made available. A far less immersive experience all in all than ME1 or ME2.

Because ME2 is head and shoulders above it's older and younger brother. Seriously, that game is near-perfect.

+1 there is part of your answer
while wont go as far as near perfect just off the top IMO i would probly givie ME2 8 /10 ( IMO near perfect would be a 9 )
the other part is ME3 in general is a fail (also imo)

ME2: I played each character through on insanity+ with some additional runs for different romances and paragon/renegade choices. So that's probably somewhere around 15-20 times. Great gameplay, great story, great graphics, great soundtrack--my all time favorite of the series. I really liked gathering up my squad and gaining their loyalty while prepping for the Horizon and the Collector ship missions--and then finally taking on the Omega 4 relay with my super bad ass team. And the music was so awesome, especially at the Collector base. It really helped to set the atmosphere and injected a ton of excitement. Everything came together on that game to really make it a classic.
ME3: I'm currently on my 3rd run with a fire/cryo/TB combo character. My next will be an infil prox mine fire combo slayer. I'll probably do a novaguard run as well. Gameplay is on another level compared to ME2--which I didn't think was possible--and allows multiple playthroughs with so many different unique setups. The faster combat took some getting used to but now ME1/2 feels slow in comparison. The story is just OK; ironically it doesn't feel very epic at all since you spend most of your time mired in petty politics, etc. The music was a HUGE letdown. There was one very poignant track in the beginning as Shepard evacuates Earth, but the rest was a disappointment--especially at the end when the Crucible is revealed. So very very anti-climactic and makes the Earth mission that much more depressing. Jack Wall would have KILLED it if he had the chance. In fact most of the great music in ME3 was re-used from the ME2 soundtrack. Bottom line though: I'm only playing ME3 SP for the new DLC and because I'm taking a break from MP.

However, I played ME3 multiplayer with an intensity like no Mass Effect game ever before. I can honestly say that this is the best combat game experience I have ever had.

I played ME3 exactly one time. The ending was just one factor, it was also the too dark, grim and drainingly dramatic atmosphere throughout. When Shepard's final speech was going, and all those melodramatic goodbyes, I just could not bear it anymore, I was worn out and bored out at the same time.

I can only speak for myself here, but I'd wager this is because ME3 is the final chapter of the trilogy, whereas ME2 wasn't. The fact that you have something to look forward to (in the case of ME2, a whole next game) does motivate you to play more in preparation for what is assumed to be the big finale. Which is not quite the same for ME3; once you've finished, you're kind of done as there is nothing more to look forward to.Stardusk wrote...

For me, about 20+ runs on ME1 and ME2, only about 6 completed runs in ME3 so far, with a few more Shepards mid-game.Stardusk wrote...

A few reasons why:
1) ME3 has not been out as long as ME1 or ME2.
2) ME3 multiplayer has sucked more of my time than I first thought it would. More multiplayer = less singleplayer.
3) "Improvements" to combat system (including powers, protection system) actually lead to fewer builds and playstyles that are actually worth exploring. Improvements to combat system actually benefit multiplayer a lot more than single player. (Also, too many points to spend.)
4) Ending was rather dissappointing. I actually think the ending--even in its original form--was a good ending, but not a good end to the Mass Effect trilogy. In almost any other game the ending would be considered fantastic, but considering the standards set by the previous games, the ending came across as too sudden and its themes did not match the rest of the series, so it is considered too jarring, lackluster, and unsatisfying. I have more thoughts on it, but this is not the thread to discuss it. Just not a satisfying end.

Yeah, ending was OK but not for the END of Shepard imo.
