Why were you able to do countless playthroughs with ME2 but not ME3?

I played ME2 11 times, and ME1 10 times. I currently have two unfinished saves in ME2: one is an Insanity PT and one is another Shepard, who I probably won't be carrying into ME3 because I created her to romance Thane. (LOL) I have a "Mirror Universe" version of my canon paragon Shepard I have yet to take all the way through ME1 as well. All these playthroughs I accrued in less than two years.

A year later, I have only finished ME3 4 times; 3 with my canon Shepard and one with my primary renegade. Those include the 1st time through, second time in anticipation of the EC, and the third time in anticipation for Leviathan. I didn't like Leviathan much so I didn't pick it up again until Omega came out. I finished that one because I was almost to Cronos Station and I didn't want to start Citadel there, so I made another game for Citadel. That one I have yet to finish and I doubt I ever will. I just loathe everything after the Rannoch mission. I will probably do another PT for my renegade Shepard (just for Omega and Citadel) and a PT for my "Mirror Universe" Shepard, but that's it. Other than that, I just plan on doing loops of the Tuchanka arc, which is the part of ME3 I actually like.

I don't play MP anymore because I got bored with it, so I might get 6 PTs of ME3 done in total before I just go to specific missions to do them and pretend the rest doesn't exist.

What is your story?

ME1 lots of times.  Over a dozen.

ME2 lots of times...about a dozen.

ME3...didn't finish the first playthrough when it was shiny and new...the ending controversy blew up and I quit.  BUT then modders made new and improved endings (MEHEM!) and I found out about them a month ago.  Since then, on my 3rd ME3 run.  I'll do a 4th soon after I do another ME1->ME2-> trifecta.

As to the "why" question...

Back in the days before ME3, I could play ME2 all day, every day, over and over again and just grin when people would say, "OMG can't you play a different game??" ME1 to a lesser degree, because the first few times I played it (after my roommate introduced me to ME2), I just wasn't used to the combat system, so I didn't like it as much. But when I got it down, I didn't die nearly as much as I used to and I would play it for hours on end just like ME2. It also helps that all the Shepards I play in that game are NG+. XD

But after ME3, I just had NO desire to play the games again. After the EC came out, I could bear ME1 and ME2 again, but playing ME3 is still an emotional chore for me. That, and I find the combat more tedious, the cover mechanic clumsy, and the overall story arc not nearly as engrossing. I really like bits and pieces of ME3, but the overall game is pretty bland. ME2 is strong in character-motivated plots, and ME3 isn't. Perhaps it's just a personal preference, but what I loved about the ME universe was that the story was character-driven. ME2 did that way better than ME3.

Also, the bit about the dark, draining middle installment actually being the more triumphant one is a huge reason why a lot of people did not like ME3 as much. It's like everything went downhill after ME2.

I played ME1 maybe 3 times, ME2 maybe 20-30 times, but ME3 only 2.5 (mostly due to DLCs).

For me, ME3's ending killed it. It's too much to know that whatever you did in previous games, the ending would still be the same awful thing. I've just started importing my ME2 saves now and so far it's a little better, but I simply don't have "the bug" for ME3 like I did ME2. Also, RL is picking up for me too, so I dunno how far I will be going, even with my old saves.

If you combine CDRSkyShepard, Objectivity, haildodge's comments, it would take the words right out of my mouth.

ME2 is a feel good ride that throws you into a world with amazing characters, immensely satisfying gameplay, and a sense of infinite possibilities. ME3 is that same exact world ending in 9 - 30hrs of depression.

EDIT: in case you were wondering OP, I've played ME1 3 times (with various incomplete playthroughs), ME2 ~10 times, and ME3 1 1/2 times.

I also think it's worth noting that ME2's (combat) gameplay and story were one complete package. To experience one, you must experience the other. In ME3, I could get my fix of combat from multiplayer (from any class at any time, might I add), making the story the campaign mode's only leg to stand on.

I still love to play ME1 and 2 but ME3 ends badly and I don't want to get there, I dread whats coming also the dialog options and interrupts in 1 and 2 allow for a more varied PC ME3 was incredibly streamlined, stripped of the illusion of choice ME3 was move from point A to B with no variation, I find that boring both in gameplay and in dialog.

No sense of achievement - knowing that, in the end, it all comes down to Godchild rendering Shepard a clinical retard and kindly letting him win, I just don't see the point in going through it again.

Why? My Shepard still felt like the Shepard I created in ME1, going into ME2 and ending after ME2. Not so much ME3.

Not an issue for me. I have been able to playthrough ME 3 multiple times. Not so much in the last few months but that is due to other things going on in my life. I've been wanting to play it.

The 'listen & fetch' missions had me banging my head against the wall out of pure boredom. Multiplayer is just horde mode, extremely boring to me.

ME1 will always have a special place in my heart because that is the very first game that literally shook me. That conversation with Sovereign chilled me to the bone. Speaking with Vigil was amazing. They were an amazing foil to each other: one filled me with hope, and the other scared me ****less.

BUT DEAR LORD THE COMBAT AND INVENTORY.

However, like CDRSkyShepard said: after you learn the ropes it's still a good game.

ME2 is different. It has always felt like the start of something amazing to me. Not saying ME1 wasn't (see above), I just felt like ME2 was a bit more...alive? I'm not sure how to explain it. It is also more character driven. ME2 is the first game that introduced the Paragon/Renegade Interrupt, which I think was a great way to express our Shepard in a way words can't. It was unique, and fun. I love the crew most of all; sure you can't talk to them in depth like in Dragon Age, but they still have a certain charm which makes you smile whenever you go up to talk to them again. Aiding my crew during their loyalty missions helped me understand them better and feel much closer to them than I ever did in ME1. (Kaidan and Ash don't count here because you get to know them exceptionally well in ME1).

ME3 is still a bit of a heartbreak. Sure, the Citadel DLC made it easier to swallow - and I really enjoy that DLC - but that DLC is the only reason why I will go back and play ME3 now. Only. Reason. The characters that were overshadowed in the vanilla game are back, there is humor, there is romance - it is basically everything I thought ME3 would be, but the first thing we got was the Star Child.

The only thing that keeps me from playing ME3 1000 times is real life. The game came out during my senior year(s) of university, I can't play it all the time, work, and go to school. I would if I could.

ME3 is unequivocally the best game in the series in every respect except the end writing, and the second summer starts I will do atleast one full long insanity playthrough with all the DLC of ME3.

And the real reason most of you havent played it over and over is the logistical reason that it's been out a year while ME2 3+ years and ME1 6

I only knew about Mass Effect in general about a year and a half before 3 came out, so time isn't a factor for me.

Phantom, I miss your gifs so much.

(*forgoes ending*) ME 2 was first of all a little bit better told. The story up to a point of argument, seemed to drag on at moments and a smaller crew made me not really want to experiment because I didn't have a "backup" to replace what I needed for certain missions. Also weapons and armors felt limited. Certain characters were also poorly treated(Jacob...yeah I know Jacob was iffy to begin with but yeah.) The biggest thing is with it being the third title, it had a job to wrap up a lot but it left a huge amount of questions unanswered.

I loved role playing my Shepards in ME and ME2. In me3....immersion broke. Within the first few minutes my Shepard was on the screen in me3, I felt something jarring. It didn't help that I had every bug/glitch under the sun (lol), but when my Paragade, "just the facts' maam", Cate Shepard started "speaking out of turn"....I became disconnected. And it just got worse. By the time I had a chance to speak to my Shepard's LI of choice (Thane), I slid off my chair. I was completely divorced from her (and my favorite NPC) by the end of that conversation. I went through the motions of a few more small tasks, got "bugged out" (again...lol) on Kasumi's quest, and stopped playing. That was March 7, 2012. Watched most everything else, including both the vanilla endings and the EC endings on YT. *shrug*

So current tally:
ME = 5
ME2 = 8
me3 = a third of one

Hopefully with new mods, I may be able to persevere. *wink*

I wasn't - it's probably the other way round, for me, when you count new game plusses.

Nice try, though.

I'm basing this on people I have talked to, of course there will be exceptions.

How interesting.  You ask a question with the premise being that only your opinion is valid, and anyone with a different opinion is an 'exception'.  Egocentric much?

Anyways, I'd hazard a guess that people who didn't play ME3 as many times as 1 or 2 did so because it was...AN ENDING.  The characters have all been fleshed out, the setting is well known.  There's little if anything to know about them.  Now we're getting to the last, great unknown...HOW it all ends.  Once you reach the ending, why go on further?   Psychologically you can play the other 2 games knowing that the story continues.  The story doesn't continue after 3.  It is done.  It is no more.  It has ceased to be.  It has expired and gone to see it's maker.  It is an ex game.  (apologies to Monty Python)

So far, I've played 3 as many times as 2.

I've got about...4-6 playthroughs of ME1. About double that for ME2, maybe more. ME3? 2. Soldier and Engineer. Engineer only because I did Citadel DLC and stopped there right before Cerberus Base.

When I beat the first 2 installments of Mass Effect, I felt like I was accomplishing something and it gave me a feelgood...feeling that I helped do that. 2 kicked it up to 11 with the character-driven plot. I played ME2 so much, trying to perfect each and every playthrough, making sure no one died on Suicide Mission, getting all the side missions done, everything. I was getting it ready for the ultimate playthrough and bring it over into 3.

and then something happened to me that happened to many other like-minded individuals. The ending of Mass Effect 3 felt like all my choices, all my efforts in ensuring that my squadmates, allies and I would beat the Reapers for good felt like it was all for naught. It got brought down to 3 different colored endings(pre-EC...still pretty much the same though post-EC, though it did make it less confusing as to how/why squadmates would go from being on Earth to in the Normandy n' all the other points).

I know pretty much everyone's tired of hearing about the ending complaints but it was just too much for me to become really invested in beating ME3 ever again. I still can't. I've got all the DLC, I play countless hours of multiplayer, but I just can't bring myself to beat ME3. I stop at the Cerberus Base, do all the SP DLC content, finish up with Citadel DLC, then quit.

ME1 ~8 times. I kept 5 saves of it.
ME2 ~14 times. I kept 12 saves of it.
ME3 ~5 times. I kept 3 saves of it.
Then...
From Ashes DLC issue (solved) when I bought Omega,
Collector Edition DLC issue (...solved) after solving the issue with From Ashes,
Firefight Pack DLC issue (... ok. goodbye.) when the last DLC was released.

I've probably done the most playthroughs in Mass Effect 2, followed by 3, then 1. I prefer 3 for it's gameplay, but I've had 2 for longer and I would never play 3 without importing from 2. I rarely replay 1 since it's so rough around the edges compared to the later ones.

To me the first Mass Effect is magical. Despite it's obvious limitations and inferior gameplay mechanics it has a timeless quality that is not so easily defined which keeps me coming back and for that reason it will always be the definitive Mass Effect experience to me.

Between ME2 and ME3 I've always considered ME2 to be the weakest entry in the series because it's an irrelevant collection of (mostly worthless) distractions that adds almost nothing to the plot and arguably completely derails the entire franchise despite being a quantum leap forward in gameplay and the suicide mission being high water mark in this generation of games.

The only thing ME2 has going for it besides companion variety and strong characterization is gameplay and ME3 does that better, tighter more focused plot with more focus on the characters I actually care about. If it wasn't for the last 5 minutes I don't know why anybody could prefer ME2 with a straight face.

Completly agree. ME2 has good characters but a pointless plot.

On topic, ME 1 hast the most playtroughs followed by 2 then 3. This is because of release dates and that I always start playtroughs with ME1.

ME2 8 or 9 times, ME3 currently in my 4th and then I'm done.

The reason is really simple. Playing ME2 felt like getting my four saves ready for transfer into ME3; I had a lot of things I wanted to try, and the saves had to be just right. It got to a point where I became a bit obsessive about this, really. And the reason ME3, conversely, has so little replay value for me is because the ending is always the same no matter what I do. The minor variations really don't make a difference to me. With repeat playthroughs, I've slowly come to appreciate what variation there is over the course of the story depending on what you did and who's alive and who isn't, but it still took me about a year to find the motivation to play through it with my fourth and final Shepard because if the outcome is always the same no matter what, it just isn't that interesting.

So I'm sorry if this is another "ZOMG TEH ENDIGN SUXX0RZ" rant, but... it does, and that's my reason.
