The fastest way to deplete the spawn budget is to focus on the elites (Phantoms, Dragoons, Ravagers, Hunters, Rocket Troopers, Pyros, Brutes, Scions) instead of either bosses or mooks. On Gold or Platinum.

If you focus on Atlases and Banshees on Platinum, you haven't learned all you could about this game yet.

By deal, I meant deal with them attacking you.  You can't always as completely and easily avoid them as you can on the other difficulties (especially on small maps).  

You can't? Well I guess you have a point then.

Referring to the OP, there are 2 or fewer boss enemies on every Plat wave except Wave 5, and the vast majority of them are Atlases. If you can't always completely and easily avoid 2 Atlases, especially on small maps, then may the RNG God help you.
