As I understand it, many people might have been divided about the nature of the endings to the Mass Effect franchise, the overall direction it took, and the feel of the Mass Effect story as a whole, but whilst this exists, I think there is something every person who has played Mass Effect can attest to is this, the Mass Effect Universe is an incredible and inspiring place. A strange revelation struck me though as I was gazing out at the nightsky a few days ago though, the Mass Effect Universe is just one possible vision of our own galaxy, a reality which, although embellished, rests upon the premise that man has broken past our gravitational and technological tethers, and, with the necessary resources, begins to colonise other worlds, exploit new resources, and become a race which finds ourselves establishing an interstellar civilisation.
My fundamental question is this then(and i invite everyone interested in space and the Universe, not only Mass Effect, to contribute) do you see our race spreading out from the planet Earth? Is this a desirable thing if it was feasible? Would we become a race of superhumans, where conflict(the competition ordained by nature for resoruces) becomes a thing of the past as the true 'plenty for all' utopia emerges? Will we expose ourselves to the greater threat of extinction from the horrors of the galactic forces that be, or will we become a race that masters space and perhaps soon learns to manipulate time itself? Anyone's opinions are more than welcome!
