Outsider Challenge means I need Volus Adept and Merc (as I'm part way though 200 waves)

Upto last night I've not been that good with them.  I've alway said that I need about 5 games to be good with them but can only stand 2 at most.  I usually forget the cloak for most of the game as well

I'm starting with the Merc first.

Before i used him as a sniper build engauging from a distance.  Done okay like that but decided to go assault this time.

Silver games for speed and a little forgiveness as I'm PUGing

Geth Scanner, Falcon, Paladin, Disruptor ammo for crowd control.

Dropped into a game in progress.  Results were fairly good much more fun than my previous games with him.  I remembered the cloak this time and was stealth reviving quite a lot as they were all newish.

Stuck with the build and them for a second go, but afterwards decided to swap to Harrier to see just what a full-on Combat Volus would be like.  Timer ticked down while I was in the equipment screen so only had AP ammo on this time.

Got Reator/Reapers and while things where going down things seemed a bit slow plus I was having to revive the others a lot.  Then two Banshees turned up

Long story short (too late!)  ended up soloing waves 7 & 8.  When all the others went down in the first 20 seconds of wave 9 I decided that was enough.  I wanted quick games.

So I revived the host and died.  To be fair to him he had been paying attention to my solo game as he lasted for 5 minutes with his Bat Adept GPS / BW build

Overall I was happy with how he works as an Assault class, though I keep forgetting the Decoy except during Objective waves the Drone isn't fantasic but does provide a disraction at least.  The Geth Scanner is a big bonus on him due to the change of perspective plus lack of cover vaulting over stuff to run away.

Any tips for him or the Adept which I'll be playing over the next couple of days.

always have a combat drone doing something
throw a decoy when it can be helpful ( choke point where a lot of enemies are going to come through soon)
Shield boost your allies when they need it, and shield boost yourself before your shield break if possible... also when you know a powerful attack is coming your way, shield boost right before it hits to take advantage of I-frames (also helpful to revive teammates)

then just cloak all the time and reegar all the things with incendiary ammo

Close Quarters Volus and no fitness :?  You're braver than me!  but I do I love CQC
Also not the biggest lover of the Dark Lord Reegar. However might try it anyway

Volus + Claymore is far better than you'd think. And I'm not a Claymore-on-errything type of player.

Hurricane and Acolyte for weapons.

Spam chain lightening drone and decoy with electric field in the groups of baddies.

Then clean them up with Hurricane.
Don't use cloak when you're surrounded by groups of enemies.
You need both heavy melee and shield boost to survive.
Cloak makes you unable to use heavy melee, so you'll die more easily in that situation.

Take ammo's that can prime for explosions if you know that your teammates will frequently detonate your priming.
Otherwise, go for the ammo's that give you damage bonus, since mercenary can't detonate himself.

I like Harrier/Scorpion on the Merc, with incendiary ammo so the drone's detonation on death makes a fire explosion. He's great for geth, while the rest of the team is getting stunlocked to hell you just sit in the back and kill everything, and occasionally go in for the revive/shield boost.

I like using Arc Pistol as primary, and Hurricane to strip armor. This keeps his cool down low, so you can use Decoy and Drone frequently and still have shield boost readily available. Decoy with shock evo helps mez a lot of things- great for geth hunters/phantoms/nemesis etc.-then headshot everything with the Arc Pistol. With AP ammo and Targeting VI equipment he can perform really well in Gold and Platinum.

Edit:  This guy does best if you remember to keep him mobile- use cloak and Volus side roll frequently, and he can take out any boss characters on his own.

Volus Merc is one of the most underrated kits in the game.

I've only played the Volus Adept, but I basically play him as a pure Shield Boost support spammer. (6/6/6/5/3). I went with 4 Biotic Orbs for maximum power recharge rate (I think mine recharges at just under every 3/4 of a second), and only use Stasis to freeze key enemies like Phantoms, Collector Captains or Geth Hunters. In a pinch, you can throw off a Biotic Orb to get a BE with Stasis. At all other times, stick with spamming Shield Boost whenever you lose shields (which will be often, especially on Gold or Platinum) or whenever you hear your teammates yell that they've lost shields. Pick a light but damaging weapon that won't interfere with your recharge; I go with the Executioner with ULM and Power Amplifier mod.

You're not a damage dealer; you won't score a lot of points with this kit, but you'll also notice that if you go down, everybody's in a hurry to revive you. XD Tactics-wise you should always try to hang out with your squad, but don't hesitate to use cloaking to run if necessary. You can always loop around to revive your buddy later. Also, make sure that you use Shield Boost after reviving someone, as it boosts their shields to maximum even before they regain control. This can be a lifesaver on harder difficulties.

I have lots of volus footage on platinum with live commentary. Even though the BSN consensus is that the volus sentinel is the worst character in the game, it's actually my favorite class to play. It's extremely versatile when played with a reegar (see the first video to see an annotated explanation of this). I must also note that the volus
gets 0 slowdown when firing a reegar, so if you equip adrenaline you can circle-strafe praetorians to death.

Gold ANNOTATED COMMENTARY (geth / hazard glacier)

Platinum (collectors / firebase white)

***In both platinum games, the volus sentinel w/ reegar allows a weaker team to actually complete platinum (operation lodestar was in effect at the time)

I was using the Adept last night.  I don't do pure support.  I can do kill the things and stealth medic as well.

While I wasn't able to top the board with him, second with a fairly even spread points wise most of us getting 60k in a Silver match.  That was with the Acoylte/Hurricane (wasn't wasting Warp/Inced ammo only AP)

If you get the Merc Shield Spam is a complete waste of his abilities.  The match in the OP I scored 112K which was the same as all the other three scores combined.

Volus can be killing machines they just need care to do so.
