I am suffering from three areas in my mod crashing to desktop. One is so bad it is pretty much unplayable.

It took me a while but I have realised what the three area have in common and I am rebuiling them now to fix that.

I think the issue is that I used water at 0.01 m, smoothed to give a polished floor effect. It seems to me this is causing problems. It did not in the original build but the more i copy the mod or area for other builds the worse it gets.

Also you cannot delete the water and rebake, the problem remains. However the first rebuilt area I have tested has not problme at all.

I certainly hope this is the problem. I will report back when all the areas are done. If it is not ... expect tears :D

My experience with outdoor areas is that you want everything above the z-axis, and you want it up there a lot...

This may explain the problem with my toolset-crashing docks area. The water is at -6 height..

These are interior areas. I have put water at -1 on a number of my areas and that has not caused me issues.

I have water in indoor areas too but not smooth, I am not sure if it makes a difference whent he rendering starts, hells I am not even sure this is the problem ... I just hope so.

I've had crashes with too many levels of water, and crashes where a spot of water is 'torn', with distorted polygons instead of a flat surface. It might be something with the refraction/reflection math that goes screwy in complicated situations, or maybe some sort of bug in that part of the toolset.

It makes me hopeful, though, that maybe copying areas using TerraCoppa and leaving out the water might solve some issues.

I've done a lot of multi-level water work over the years and haven't seen any issues like this. I also just assume a toolset crash is par for the course at this point.

If it were the toolset I could live with that. It's in game, more often than not on area entry and often on area exit, it always crashes from a saved game in the area being called up. Its pretty borked.

All the areas are rebuilt. I can but hope.

Ah, I thought you were talking about in the toolset the whole time, not in game. It's probably not the same problem I was talking about.

They are fine in the toolset. I think (hope) it is the game trying to render a smooth water surface but these areas have worked in the first release of my mod "The Last Days of the Raven" so it has happened since I copied the mod over to be the campaign version.

This might not be the problem. I just don't know.

The only time I've seen the game crash is when I forgot to bake something properly. Trying to walk on a non-walk area does it every time. Other than that... Haven't seen anything that crashes in-game.
