So I was thinking of 're-writing' Mass Effect...

Okay, first off, a HUGE disclaimer so people don't get the wrong idea: I LOVE Mass Effect. They are three of my favourite games of all time. What I think they really excel at is creating such an immersive universe - the races, the cultures, the planets and most of all the characters. I'd hope that most people agree that the characters are some of, if not *the* best cast of characters in any game, perhaps any form of media. And they, in my eyes, are what make the difference between Mass Effect being a great series of games and turn them into modern classics.

So, I'm going to start by going out on a bit of a limb by saying ME1 is my favourite game in the trilogy. In my experience this is seen as a rather odd choice and I can see why. Both Mass Effect 2 & 3 trump it in almost every department. First of all the gameplay is so, so much better in the sequels - BW really nailed the combat and it's why the multiplayer in ME3 has been such a success. Overall, the characters and scripts are probably better in the latter two games as well - Garrus was already awesome in ME1 but it's not until later on that
he's a truly awesome bro.

However, there is one thing that, in my opinion, ME2 & 3 fall down on and that is the plot writing. NOT the character dialogues as I explained above, NOT the mission writing as evidenced by things like the suicide mission and Tuchanka in ME3, but the overarching plot. Just to be clear, this is not a bash on the ending. I didn't like it all that much, sure, but I have other problems with the plot too.

The thing I liked so much about ME1 was the story and universe it set up. Sure, ME2 expanded the universe and the characters, but the actual plot aspect of ME2 is really thin. There are around 5 story missions in the game, which hardly have anything to do with the Reapers except for the final one, where they whip out this retarded human reaper. As I said I love the game, but that’s because so much of it is spent doing awesome loyalty missions and not the giant side-plot that is the Collectors. I could talk about dodgy writing devices such as killing Shepard, introducing TIM as a brand new character and then turning Cerberus into an organisation more powerful than the Alliance in ME3, but I won’t. For an interesting take (that’s IMO a bit too harsh, but it points out a lot of things I’m talking about), read this article:www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/.

So I had an idea to re-write the second and third parts of the series. But just the plot. Leave all BioWare’s excellent work on the characters and universe (hell, maybe even expand on them – visit the Vorcha homeworld etc.) and really finish the great story that the original began. Of course, I have nowhere near the time or experience to recreate these games. And finding a way of sorting all the ridiculously complicated logic from choices in the game is going to be very hard. But summer’s coming up and I’ll have lots of spare time.

But why am I writing this massive post? Two reasons really. First off I think it will raise some interesting (and hopefully pretty civil (please?)) discussions about the plot of the Mass Effect series without concentrating on the ending for once. And the other reason is ideas. I don’t know how many of you will agree with or even respect my opinion on this matter, but I’d like to know what you would change. More Spectres? In my outline, Sovereign attacking the Citadel gives the council a bit of a kick up the arse (none of the ‘but we thought it was a Geth!’ stuff) and gets its act together. Nihlus and Tela (the asari in LotSB) were awesome – why not more? I’m sure you could come up with some pretty awesome drell Spectres. Any ideas would be awesome, really. I’ve seen some fantastic alternate endings to ME3, so I’m sure there are loads of great ideas out there for the series as a whole (although ideas for motives behind the Reapers would be particularly awesome).

So come and throw all your fanfiction at me :D
Cheers for reading =]

'ello. I messed with the Reapers' motives in my post-war sequel FF

[***spoilers below for my fic The Damned if anyone was going to read...***]

Basically, because of the haphazard nature of the Reaper attack in our cycle, I supposed that the Reapers themselves are in flux, at war with each other as they debate whether the cycles are still effective or fit for purpose. This is due to the current cycle being far more effective and prepared than any other cycle they have experienced. Hence why the Charon relay was still open, allowing our entry (and escape...) to/from Sol, and why suddenly the Reapers could move the Citadel on a whim but hadn't before (inner conflict).

Anyhoo, 2 cents thrown in.
