Did I play a different game than everyone else? If you befriend Carver he's lot less of a ****** to you for the few moments you have him in DA2, then when you send him to the Wardens he grows up alot since he gets over the whole "not feeling important" thing he had. By the time you see him in Legacy he's very friendly with Anders and Varric.

(I can't speak for him being a Templar I'm guessing he doesn't like it very much since Bethany hates bieng a Warden but loves being a Circle Mage, so i'm assuming it's the opposite for Carver.)

I think I would prefer to see Carver out of the two. I think he grew up a bit during DA2 and I would like to see how he progresses as a Grey Warden. I doubt he would be a companion though.

How in all of Thedas did you befriend Carver?!
No matter how nice I was to him I always got rivalry points... that and I kept helping the mages lol.
Anyway, Carver does grow up in the Wardens, and as you said, got over 'the not feeling important bit', and he's a lot more bearable, even with full rivalry upon his return. I think the only difference in his character occurs if he is either a templar or a Warden. I played legacy with him on full rivalry, and he was a lot nicer and more mature as a Warden than as a Templar (though its been a while since I played it...). I think its because as a Warden, he is forced to work with other mages who have been in far worse situations or non-mages that told him to get over it, or maybe had been in similar situations... Though I like to think that my Warden Commander Amell (a mage) met Carver and slapped him upside the head everytime he bad-mouthed his family.:D

You have be selective of which of quests you bring him on, and you have to figure out how to be nice to him without patronizing him. I believe he doesn't actually like hunting down mages because he thought he'd actually be protecting people from evil instead rounding up runaways everyday, being a Warden he protects Thedas from the darkspawn.

Also I would not like to see either of them in DA:I, I don't care for cameos.

You can befriend with Carver. He's a very prideful guy, and I think his approval a bit like Fenris, just act accordingly. Though since his default approval is rivalry 50, you will need to work extra hard and careful to max friendship before the end of act 1.

As others have said, it isn't impossible to befriend Carver, and he is a lot more tolerable as such. Not a bad character at all, and I enjoyed his convos in Legacy

Carver.

I absolutely loathed Carver, from the minute I started the game, and I have to say, my reaction upon seeing what happened to him (playing as a rogue my first time around) was one of barely concealed joy.

I changed my mind after actually doing an entire playthrough where he lives. I like Bethany, don't get me wrong, but Carver seems to me a much more interesting character. Especially if he comes back from the Deep Roads alive.

I thought Carver being a whiny chipped shoulder is what made him a good character. For normal strangers it might be intolerable but for a sibling relationship it makes total sense.

Bethany was cute so I wouldn't mind having her as an LI in DAI.

As an only child IRL I can live without seeing Carver or Bethany again, although the sibling experience was interesting. Hmm, if I really had to choose...I actually might pick Carver I suppose. I think you have a point in that he at least had more of a personality than Beth, and he definitely matured a bit as a Grey Warden.

I even used the dragon age wiki to see how to maximize the amount of friend I get and I couldn't get full friendship. In the beginning of the game they give you Carver with quite a bit of rivalry and make it hard to get anything but in the game. And the opposite for Bethany. As if to say: He's your rival and she's your friend. Period. This was one of the thousands of reasons I say Hawke is predetermined and that I don't acknowledge DA2.

Naw, they were only mildly interesting for me. I would much rather see greater attention paid to new characters.

I enjoyed Bethany as a companion, but ultimately I think Carver is the more interesting character. His struggle between love of his family and wanting to step out of his sibling's shadow is, to me, the better story.  I would not mind seeing either in DA3, as a connection back.  Depending on how much time passes between 2 and 3, I'd also like to see how much they grow, what roles they take in their potential organizations, and what stances they take towards the conflict.

If Carvs or Beths wasn't your sibling, they'd be a lot less interesting to me. Roleplaying the fiercely family-loyal brother or sister added to Hawke's character, IMO.

On that note, Bethany.

They have so many different ways to die, that it'll be easier if they just don't appear again. Ever.

Yep. Plus, they can be either a Grey Warden or a Mage of the Circle/Templar. They have too many outcomes.

Allister can be a king or a warden or a drunk if he's alive and he got a cameo.

I like them both and would love to see them both (depending on who is alive of course).

But I have to say I preferred Carver in the end, I was one of those people who didn't like him at first, but after finishing a play through with him in it I changed my mind. He actually became one of my favorite characters in DA2.
