The entire Catalyst nonsense is still nonsense. Entirely.

Shepard: In the metal scrap pile like the Geth are.
Shorter note: DESTROY THE REAPERS!

Hmm do the reapers deserve to be destroyed?
Yes.

IMO and I don't really fancy speaking to my crew while controling the reapers

For me it's the perfect ending.
All the other endings don't make sense to me.

I will choose Mehem for all the playthroughs I'll do, which probably won't be many anymore.

I agree with that. In total, the Star-Child-Catalyst thing doesn't exist in my headcanon. At all!

Shepard's survival was never a factor for me in choosing Destroy. In fact on my first run through the game, I had no idea that Shepard could survive Destroy. And since I didn't play multiplayer, he didn't.
Destroy was always the most appealing option to me because it is the only one where the Reaper War ends in a triumph. Control and Synthesis are stalemate endings.

I also thought about refusing with that option and trying to get to Synthesis through "normal evolution" (even though that would probably fail, since organics tend to return to their old ways after nearly every crysis).
And for me, Shepard dying was never a "bad ending" issue. True heroes die. Read some greek myths
But seriously, I would have loved him to live and have the Citadel party at the end of the game, but yeah, that's life =)

But on topic, I might be more tempted to pick Contro.

The Reaper War ends in a draw with neither side having succeeded in destroying the other. The Reapers and the civilizations of the galaxy simply stop fighting each other, while the Reapers maintain a fully intact and operational fleet capable of annihilating the galaxy any time. The war concludes in armistice and a return to the status quo antebellum. (galaxy's future determined by A.I. overlord)
Destroy is the only ending where the Reaper War ends in victory for the civilizations of the galaxy.
It ends in defeat in Refuse.
