Edit: To directly answer your question, satisfying 5,000,030 would be better. However, when the proposal is actually mutually exclusive, you won't get it. That is why there is no A, B, C, D option. There is only A+B+C, or D.

Whether it's mutually exclusive is now something worth discussing.

Simply asserting that it is, however, isn't helpful.  My point throughout this thread has been that we should be able to make the game more accessible for some without making it less accessible for anyone else.  And you've resisted that every step of the way on no grounds whatever, unless there's some sort of significant cultural difference between our local populations such that your experience of interaction is vastly and weirdly different from mine.

Really? I thought your point throughout the thread was that addressing people by name in conversation is unnatural, and that Bioware would be better served to stop doing it. I completely disagree with that. If you were arguing for inclusivity this whole time, you've done an absolutely terrible job of conveying it.

Of course not. The PC can speak character names, because all the NPC names are assigned by the writers.

Except, if we accept that your logical assumptions of how frequently people are addressed by name are true, it'd be just as unnatural for the PC to speak character names, and therefore the PC should also not speak NPC names.

As such, a (presumably) more natural way of directing this should be done. You gave an example of physically touching the individual, which would work. And we could do this for the PC as well.

Again, the ideal solution is simply not to voice anyone

In other words, the ideal natural solution is to not voice people (something irrelevant to whether or not names are used - I have a sneaking suspicion that you have little issue if names are used when it's a name of your choosing however, and you have fabricated a position in the hopes of getting something that you want), and to not use their names. Though you've already conceded that name use is perfectly valid when addressing NPCs.

If the game had no voice, do you still have reservations with the player name you chose being addressed on a consistent basis?

As an anecdote, I typically use the person's name when I am saying hello to them, unless they are in a group to which I use a plural term like "guys."  I ask this because I am having a hard time convincing myself that you didn't fabricate a position simply because you could then use it as an argument against a position you'd be against.

This thread needs more innuendo surnames, like Johnson or Angus.

Ha! I know where you got this from.

Yup. Already suggested Blackshear and Behanan. I haven't thrown Siva out there yet. You can probably count on Harrell and Ware at some point. Maybe a Hanc*ck or Henderson. They'll come in order I like them best.

Hehe. :P

Not sure why but I'm partial to the word "Hull" for a surname.

I'd actually enjoy a surname and backstory that linked the Inquisitor to an existing family we met in one of the previous titles, or even one of the books, as was done with the Hawke family, which I'd have liked to see Bioware do more with.  Narratively speaking it brings an added layer of depth, especially if there's some political or religious or philosophical irony involved.

A family dynasty would be nice. I think there are a few noted in World of Thedas but I don't have the book yet so I can't name any specifically.

Pennyfeather is a surname and Nerdlinger is just another word for nerd. The rest I made up, but who knows... there could be a Wigglebuns out there somewhere...

I dunno about anybody else, but I use people's names constantly when there's more than one other person around.  Hey, you! is ambiguous and kinda rude.

Picking from a preset list of names which would be voiced throughout the game would require more voice acting and be more costly. Think about it this way. If a character were to say, "Hey Ryan come here." and it sounds fluid and it flows naturally. But if someone chose the name Frank it wouldn't be as simple to just cut out Ryan and substitute Frank. If we did that it may sound a little awkward. The best solution is to choose a surname akin to Shepard or Hawke. Than we could put in our own first name like we have done in the past. I would just like the surname to be used more often than Sirah. I felt like at times they barely used said Hawke. It makes sense if you have your sibling with you but when they aren't its just annoying.
