Actually there were a few side mentions by some characters, throughout the first-half of the game, and you can go to the Crescent Nebula with Leviathan.

Basically the Reapers invaded. And thats more or less all we know.

You can read a planet description that tells you about them being invaded by the Reapers if you buy Leviathan. You can't land there or anything, though.

Ahh, gotcha. I didn't get Leviathan so that's prolly why I didn't hear much...

It gets invaded early in the game.

If you listen to the news reports you can hear a brief mention of it. Since the news story can be heard when you first visit the Citadel after Menae, it is likely that it was invaded around the same time or before Earth.

In the Leviathan DLC you van visit the Tasale system (the system Illium belongs to), though Illium itself isn't a visitable location. You do get an 'update' on Illium's status in the Reaper War from the planet description however, and scanning the planet yields a war asset from Illium's corporate mavens.

Illium, according to the description thing, fought like hell. They managed to repell the Reaper fleet so only the ground forces were the issue, but they barely touched Illium, compared to other planets.
