Well, if Shepard was a GI...
Here's what would have happened.
London, final mission, the tank breaks down and everyone and his mother starts running for the conduit. Harbinger arrives and starts nuking the **** out of everything.
Shepard to his teammates: "Run. This unit will provide cover fire".
Teammates: "WTF are you talking about? Cover fire? That's a goddamn Reaper out there!".
Shepard: "Do as this unit orders. This unit will provide cover fire".
Shepard takes his trusty Javelin off his shoulder, and his reluctant teammates start running for the conduit. Shepard cloaks, fires the PM, aims for Harbinger's head...
BOOOM!!! Suddenly the air is filled with the WTFexplosion of harbinger. Everyone stands still and turn his head toward Shepard, who is casually reloading his Javelin.

Something I learned from my D&D days was that humans are the most mundane, boring things ever. So making Shep anything other than human could make it easy mode.
