I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but when I search, my results talk about what order the DLC should be played in, but not when in the game...

I'm totally new to Mass Effect but I have all three games and am nearing the end of ME3 (don't worry - I've been warned that I won't like the ending)!   I experienced small hiccups by playing some DLC out of turn with the story in ME1 and ME2, but have practically sabotaged my game in the incredible ME3!  What a disaster!   Example: (one of many) I prematurely played The Citadel after a pile of other inconsequential quests (not realising this was DLC - and worse, the final DLC) and my dallying drunkenly at my party meant that I missed out on some missions AND some characters (my ME3 has missed out on Jack, Kasumi, AND has resulted in me unintentionally killing off a couple of characters and missions such as the Grissom Academy.  It's not a complaint - it just shows how well integrated the DLC is in the game, but I messed up!

Does anyone know if there is some sort of guide to the 'order of play' for missions AND integrated DLC - or even just some suggestions?  Each time I search, results explain what order to play the DLC, but not when in the main game.

Many thanks for any help. :)

Well, as you've noticed yourself, you should save the Citadel DLC for before the final mission - or you could start it sometime after Priority: Citadel so you always have some encounters with your squad.

Leviathan: Doesn't make any difference when you play it, if I remember correctly.
Omega: Same with Leviathan.
From Ashes: No difference again (save if you want to hear other squadmates dialogue if you take them on the mission, I guess).

If anyone has some mistakes or oversights to point out, please do so.

Citadel, is really the only one that matters. Just do it as soon as you've finished the mission on Sanctuary (trying to be as vague as possible as not to spoil it).

Well, do every Side-quest that involves squadmates before going to after Horizon(Won't tell what it is), then play Citadel DLC.

Do From Ashes right after having access to the Normandy. There is a new Character in there and you'll miss some dialogues.

Leviathan: Do it Like Citadel, because Squadmates have some very interesting conversations on the Normandy after completing each mission.

Omega: Don't matter... But you'll miss only ONE line on dialogue when in this DLC if you aren't pre-after horizon

Besides Grissom Academy, there are a couple of missions in the stock game that have timers. Tuchanka:Bomb and the Rannoch sidequests are the important ones. Do these when they come up; you've probably done Tuchanka already.

From Ashes: if you are amused by natural-born trolls and dry humor, do it immediately. you can't actually take Javik with you on the Turian moon mission, so just do it straight after that. he's one of the best written characters in the ME trilogy, and hilarity ensues just about every time you talk to him.

Leviathan: I'd say somewhere around the end, before the Cerberus HQ Assault mission. do it earlier if you want access to the new "Dominate" power.

Omega: personally I enjoy doing this after I boot Cerberus off the Citadel. I get my Virmire Survivor back on the ship, I'm all happy happy, morale is heightened and so I decide to kick Cerberus while they're down by retaking Omega immediately afterwards. stratusfaction guaranteed :)

Citadel DLC: save that for last, right before you trigger the endgame so that you have all possible interactions. for example, if you do it before Horizon, you won't have Miranda showing up. if you don't do Grissom academy, you won't have Jack. if you haven't got the ME2 Kasumi DLC, then no Kasumi. if you haven't resolved the quarian/geth situation, you don't get Tali.

mind you Thane, Mordin and Legion will never show up no matter what, since the Citadel DLC is playable only after Priority: Citadel and those 3 are not around anymore.

speaking of Grissom academy, you have to do that one before triggering the endgame of course, otherwise the kids and Jack would've never been saved and instead kidnapped and experimented on by Cerberus, turning Jack into an in-game enemy when you assault the Cerberus HQ later.

Thank you all - that is a HUGE help!   Image IPB

So it seems my main mistakes were not recognising some DLC as being DLC (ie I thought I was just playing part of the main story) and leaving some missions too late.  Altogether, I missed out on Jack, Kasumi AND possibly Thane!  (didn't realise about Thane in this game).

I must be nearing the end now.  My war assets bar is 100% filled and my Shepard is level 59.  I still have the attack on Cerberus HQ and the Illusive Man's base to come though (plus around 20 other incidental shopping-list things for demanding Salarian and Volus friends) but I've played Sanctum, Tuchanka, Rannoch, the Dr Bryson missions - so some things I caught in time.  Leviathan I played late purely by chance and same with Omega (this last I knew was DLC).  Oh, and I already managed to lose Miranda (missed one part of the sequence) and Mordin and Legion have also gone.

Another couple of questions:

Are the "N7" labelled missions part of the main game?  I've never seen the base game only (I installed all DLC before I started playing).  And how do I recognise "Horizon" and "From Ashes"?  I have very likely played these without knowing it, but I wanted to check.

Thanks once again - I really do appreciate it.

Eden Prime is labeled Investigate Prothean Artifact for From Ashes
The Citadel menu is the start point for the rest of the DLC:
Bryson's Lab is the start point for Leviathon
Meet Aria henchmen for Omega
Apartment is the start point for Citadel

I usually do Eden prime right after palaven, leviathan during the tuchanka missions with the final one right after the genophage thing, omega during sometime in the rannoch missions and citadel after horizon.

Well, I am mostly doing Eden Prime (From Ashes/Javik.) after Mars, Leviathan before that event on the citadel with a lot of guns, Omega right after it and Citadel after Sancturary/ Mirandas cameo.

If you do Citadel after Horizon, it will feature every character.

Citadel= Go to the Citadel (Duh) and go to the Silversun Strip.

Omega= There is another dock, Aria will be there.

Leviathan= When visiting the Citadel, fly to the new lab.

From Ashes= You will get a ''Investigate Prothean artifact'' in the galaxy map, it will be on Eden Prime. ( The first mission on ME1 was there too.)

N7 missions are not DLC related, just side missions. It's safest to put off doing all Priority missions you have until you complete all the side missions- N7 missions and the planet scanning stuff- that you have because, as some folks have said, Priority missions advance the plot and can lock you out of completing certain side missions. So I always save the Priority mission for last in each stage.

AH! Thanks bloodstalker1973 - that is likely what I did. There have been a couple of 'priority' missions popping up and, after losing the Grissom Academy, I've been rushing ahead with those in case I lose anything else - complete opposite of what I should have been doing!

Oh, and I just found what the "From Ashes" DLC was - yes, played that too.  I think I now have a more sensible idea of the order of play for my next play-through (which will happen as soon as I've reached the end of ME3).

I'd strongly advise that you download MEHEM...Mass Effect Happy Ending Mod. After working your way through all 3 games plus dlc, trust me, this mod helps a great deal. Use it on your second go with ME3 and follow it up with "Citadel." Compare the the 2 plays, see what you think. As for the other dlc's, it doesn't matter the order, although personally, I always do "Ashes" straight away, "Leviathan" midway, and "Omega" right after that. "Citadel" always comes last......pst mod, since I only played one of the colors once, which was one time too many......my opinion.

Who knows? You may enjoy the original endings. Anything is possible. Either way, try it and see what you think.

Well, "Priority" in ME3 means the opposite of what it means ITRW, so it's more like you were being sensible but the game was not.

Many thanks!  I've noticed a lot of "bad ending" threads across the net when searching for tips and there were far too many to ignore - especially with a belated 'extended ending' option then added to the game.  I don't know all the details yet, but I'm sure I will prefer a happier one.  Am downloading this mod now for my next play-through.  If I ever want to go back to the originals, is it just a simple case of uninstalling?

VERY true!   I'll know next time that PRIORITY means "WAIT AS LONG AS POSSIBLE!" Image IPB

I disagree slightly about Leviathan's placement.

I would actuallly recommend doing Leviathan AFTER you have all your teammates since they will actually comment in-mission and after each section when you're doing Leviathan.

Especially if you are in a confirmed romance with one of the squadmates.

From Ashes is best done as early as possible, so even before Priority manae, I'd pick him up.

Right after Priority Manae, I'd then do Omega when you get back to the citadel and get see Aria in the bar.

Leviathan should be done after Priority Rannoch

I did the "Shore Leave" part of Citadel after Ranoch. I just finished Sanctuary so I will now probably do the "party" part.

As for Omega, anytime after it is unlocked works.

I've tried "From Ashes" both as soon as I am free to travel about the galaxy and after getting other certain team member. I recommend running it as soon as possible as that team member does not have any notable comments about the location (bummer really - missed opportunity imo).

As for Leviathan, ( I am glad someone suggested this) play it in segments. There are three (six if you include the Citadel parts). For best plot continuity, play part one only after Lessus ( Asari monastery) as units you will see in the first section are introduced at the monastery. The other units should have already been introduced if you follow this suggestion.
