Mantis X
Viper X
Raptor X
Incisor X
Widow V
Krysae IV
Collector I
Kishock I
Valiant III
Javelin I
Black Widow III

Those are the SRs I have.  Out of those which is the best one overall for someone just starting out as a sniper?  I haven't tried them all yet but so far I'm having the best luck with the Valiant.

Valiant if you're just getting the feel for it. Not too good against bosses but if you can get headshots it's pretty good against mooks, and use phasic rounds.

I literally JUST went through this myself. I recommend a progression of the following:

Krysae IV (more like a grenade launcher than a sniper rifle, though - can totally be skipped)
Mantis X (I can't really comment on as I never used it)
Raptor X (multi-shot, so forgiving if you miss)
Valiant III (multi-shot, so forgiving if you miss)
Viper X (multi-shot, so forgiving if you miss)
Black Widow III (multi-shot, so forgiving if you miss - also packs a punch)
Widow V (I haven't used, but is single-shot, so less forgiving)
Collector I (beam weapon, beware running out of ammo or it'll overheat)
Kishock I (charge-up weapon, single-shot)
Javelin I (learning curve, single shot with time delay before it actually fires)

Black widow or valiant, your not punished heavily for missing like some of the other ones and they do good damage.

Black Widow. Powerful and more forgiving with 3 shots.

Black widow would be my choice for a rifle to use to get the ropes of sniping.

Massive damage combined with the ability to miss twice and still kill the target or alternatively have a second chance to kill the target if you miss the head makes the BW an obvious choice.

It depends on the way you like to learn.
I would say the Valiant is a good one to start with especially if you push yourself to achieve multiple head shots per clip. But, if you need more risk to "force" you to learn then I might go with the Widow. The Jav is even more risk but, I wouldn't recommend starting out with it.

If your Black Widow is a comparable level to your Valiant (in your case, it is) I'd learn on the Black Widow.

If your Valiant was significantly higher in level (somewhat common among some players who received a lot of promo packs) I'd say learn on that one.

There's another school of thought, entirely:

Start with a Mantis or Kishock. By the time you master either of those, the others should seem fairly easy to use, by comparison.

If you decide to try the Kishock, I recommend General Moskovin 2.0's Kishock Guide. I think it may be in DragonRacer's stickied resource thread.

This is about as good a list as you could as for. Why? NO INCISOR.

Valiant. Has less kick and better RoF than a BW, and the lesser damage will teach you to headshot.

Then move on the BW.

Use the Kishock.

If you can master that, you will be able to use all of them ;)

This.

Or Valiant aka Black Widow Lite. Much easier to handle.

If you want to learn, the Widow or Mantis is great. Those guns force you to make sure every shot counts. Once you get comfortable with those, getting 3 headshots using a single clip with the BW is going to be cake.

The OG widow is not worth using over a black widow ... not at all.

Not over a Black Widow... After a Black Widow. I believe this is about Sniper Mastery Challenge, meaning the question isn't which one to use, but in what order to do them, to create a manageable learning curve. ;)

If U are new to snipin' take the Valiant or BW. It's an easy way to get the hang of it. Next, switch to Widow, Javelin and finally Kishock (on-host).

Black Widow, Valiant, Indra, Viper and the Raptor probably.

They all have a large margin for error and ignoring the BW, they all need headshots to perform well.

Like many have said, Valiant or Black widow would be great.

Though Mantis is actually good one too. Yes, you need to learn to hit with every shot, but once you have managed to do that, then doing same with Valiant or Black Widow would be much easier. Also I think that it's better to first learn to use one-shot SR's than multi shot ones.

Personally I recommend silver dagger/white against Cerberus. You learn both to kill and you also need to learn to take cover really, which is something that you don't really need to do on Bronze.

Thanks everyone, just a quick note, what I mean by best overall is mostly weight compared to damage and also ease of use. I want something that does good damage but isn't so heavy that it limits how often I can use TC but I also want it to be somewhat forgiving so that this doesn't become so frustrating that I just go back to using an AR.
