Depends if you want "training" like you said or if you meant you just want to be able to kill stuff with a sniper rifle.

For training, as said above, the Kishock. If you can learn to headshot mooks, off-host, with a Kishock everything else is gravy.

For the best sniper rifle, I prefer the BW-X, but Javelin-X is a close second. I just don't like the small time delay between trigger pull and round going out.

Thanks everyone, just a quick note, what I mean by best overall is mostly weight compared to damage and also ease of use. I want something that does good damage but isn't so heavy that it limits how often I can use TC but I also want it to be somewhat forgiving so that this doesn't become so frustrating that I just go back to using an AR.

Weight is the least of your problems. TC cooldown is independent of weight if you shoot or use a power as soon as you cloak.

I disagree with the people saying BW. Start with the Valiant. Same 3 shots as the BW, but you can get those 3 shots off faster and there is almost zero recoil. However the shots are definitely less damaging. Once you can pull off headshots consistently with the Valiant, then move on to the BW and learn to handle the recoil. Once you have that down then I'd try moving onto the single shot snipers.

Black Widow IMO.

This

When you get better move onto an OG Widow and then move onto a Javelin

Completely ninja'd by mega

The OG widow is not worth using over a black widow ... not at all.

I meant use it as a platform for the Javelin, which if your accuracy is good, is better than the Black Widow. Probably should've put that in my post but it's a bit late now lol

Valiant is very low-weight, if my memory serves, and easy to use. Black Widow is not so bad, but I also tend to pop on a power efficiency mod (even just level one) to help.

EDIT: And HolyAvenger has taught me something yet again in regards to cooldowns with Infiltrators. Nice!

The Salarian infiltrator takes the learning out of sniping but any class wit a power that causes a stagger is really good for sniping.  To learn with the valiant is probably the best because of the multiple shots.  Single shots (Widow, Mantis,) are only super effective wit phased rounds at level 3 on Gold and Platinum at least with my experience. Level 2 phasic might do alright with one shots on silver but the shield gate penalty is lower so not sure if they are needed

In that case, Mantis or Valiant.

But like HolyAvenger said, cooldowns doesn't matter much with TC.

I'd use the Widow or Mantis.

Reason why is because they teach you to line up shots rather than just spam the trigger..

I started off with the Widow. Wasn't much of a sniper in this game until I got it. One of my favourite weapons in the game.

Valiant and salarian infiltrator. Good damage and reload.

TC won't be affected by encumbrance if you use it right before shot/power. So it will always be some 3 secs. IMO the BW is the place to start. As some already pointed out you get 3 powerful shots and it gives a nice feal of power when shooting. The valiant is good but it has almost no recoil and fires really fast which will make other SRs feal hard to wield after. Also learn to reload cancel

I would say the Mantis - the BW is too forgiving with the three shots, and the Widow reload is a bit longer. The Mantis trains you to get those headshots on the first round.

From what people are saying I guess I need to give the BW another try. I haven't used it in awhile but maybe it'll be better since now I'm focusing on getting better at using SRs.

Another one that no one mentions is the CSR. Incredibly good DPS, just burst fire it like a Mattock.

Edit: Just noticed your CSR is only level 1. Yeah you might wanna hold off on using it for a bit till it levels up.

I loved the CSR on Ecks Bawks it's just that my sniper piercing mods are a low level on PC so it does dick for damage against bosses D:

I thought it was about the challenge. :P

That having been said, I think my advice probably still works. I love the Valiant, and it has a lot going for it. One of the best things it has going for it is weight, especially at high levels. It is astoshing the refresh times you can get with a Valiant X.

'Scuse me a sec.

I <3 my Valiant X.

Where was I?

In your case, with the Black Widow and Valiant both being at III, I'm inclined to say skip ahead slightly on the learning curve, and head straight for the Black Widow. In the long run, it is going to be the weapon you'll likely adapt for use on many kits. It is also likely to advance in level comparably to the Valiant. If the Valiant ever pulls ahead significantly, it may become worthwile to switch, but otherwise, either one should probably meet your sniper needs.

In all seriousness, I would suggest trying a scoped carnifex, paladin or executioner. The lower zoom on heavy pistols is quite helpful for first time snipers. Likewise for a scoped saber.

maybe. in my experience black widow deteriorates my aim. I recommend any single-shot rifle if you are serious about sniping.

for newcomers, Valiant.
for newcomers looking to do a bit more damage, Black Widow.

then there's the "most overpowered sniper rifle of all time", the CSR.

Javelin. It was the first gun I used besides Avenger and once you get it you'll never foorget how to use it.

I would keep in mind one shot kills. I don't remember the specifics but using phasic rounds a widow will body shot kill before a black widow. So if you need to kill a mook in one shot you can miss the head and still kill. If you just want to practice headshots don't rule out a saber with a scope.

Black Widow and/or your Viper X. The Viper was actually the best learner sniper for me in MP, since it was hard to get used to the difference from sniping in SP. You should get some practice in with single shot SRs too, since most of them are very powerful - get your reload cancel down!

I'd say start off with the Valiant and then progress to the Black Widow as quickly as possible.  The Valiant allows you to shoot several shots in quick succession, so if you miss, you can easily correct and shoot again.  It lets you focus on practicing headshots without a huge penalty.  With a gun like the BW, you're just not going to get as many practice shots because of the slow fire rate and the recoil that forces you to re-target after each shot.  Plus, if you really aren't experienced at sniping at all, you'll probably miss too many shots with the BW.  As soon as you can reliably land the FIRST shot with your Valiant, then move to the Black Widow.

If you want to start with the BW instead, I'd say practice on body shots first and then move to headshots.

I'm a lousy sniper and I found SI with Valiant to be relatively forgiving. I suggest starting at a difficulty lower than you're used to playing normally just to take a little of the pressure off.
