Hallo, everyone. I don't know if I'm posting this right, wrong or where I should've posted it instead- I'm new to forums. Well, I've looked at forums, but have never posted anything. I'm also relatively new to this site in its entirety, I never thought I really needed anything like this when playing a game. But, hey, turns out that Dragon Age: Origins is different. Better. Awesomer.

So. First time for everything.

Anyway, on with the question.
I'm a fantasy writer by trade, and I've got a few ideas. I looked, I learned, I downloaded the toolset. Up to now, I've used the decisively useful Wiki's to create anything, and I've learned quite a bit. I've written down an idea for a quest revolving around the Thorn of the Dead God dagger, and I thought, Hell, I'll make it.
So, so far, I've got the quest, the idea, and the first two areas, basic though they might be. I've got one conversation, which I'm damn proud of, and a few fights.

Now, the big problem. Scripting. There's alot, alot I don't know about the toolset, and creating stuff, one of the biggest ones being scripting.
I don't know the first thing about it, to be perfectly honest.

Ew, I'm rambling. So! The big question is; can anyone who's familiar/experienced/pro at scripting teach me? Toolsetting in general, I mean, and importantly some basic scripting.

Well, not getting my hopes up just yet, but.. You never know.

Cheers.

PS: Again, I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, but I don't know the first thing about proper forum-ing.

What sort of scripts do you need? Tell me one and I (or someone else bored at work) will write it for you and you can learn from it.

"Teach me to use this" is a very general question.

The best advice I can give is to take things slow, and focus on one task at a time, read the wiki, read the forums, use google... when you hit a wall, then ask on the forums, lots of people will try to help you out.

good luck ;D

start with this: http://social.biowar...x.php/Tutorials

Do all the tutorials. That'll get you started. The last one will give you a quick intro to scripting.

Then, start looking through the single player assets. You've got a massive, seriously crazy amount of material you can study. Everything is well commented and pretty easy to piece together.

Just follow the trails - for instance, start with a conversation, read through it till you find a line with an 'A' or an 'AC', so an action that the line is initiating. Find the plot that it's using, then find that plot's script, then find that script's case for the particular flag, and look at how the programmer implemented whatever actions needed to happen for that flag. Pretty soon you'll start to see how it all ties together.

You can do this with anything - plots, creatures, systems, whatever. Once you want to get really crazy, you can start checking out the scripts that are #included at the top of a script, which is where you'll find custom functions, constants, events, all that good stuff. But it helps to follow a path, so you get the understanding of A leads to B leads to C.

Then it's just a matter of blatantly plagiarizing everything you learn into your own code.

Those suggestions are good, but it is also easy to get overwhelmed ... I suggest picking something small and asking for a script ... then you can see how someone else tackles it.

One or two small scripts fully explained can really open your eyes, IMHO.

Ah, yes. This is more response than I expected, to be honest. Thanks, everyone, I'll look into it all.

Cheers.
