One thing I like about Bioware and some new games in general ex. Skyrim is that they let you choose your sex instead of playing as a fixed gender (usually male) character. I was just curious to see how many people played in a different gender perspective. I will usually play through as a female in my first run through of my game, then switch to a male on a playthrough just to see the variances in gameplay or how characters treat you.
Do you play a character of the opposite sex than you?

I'm one of those players that will play both genders. I like it that we have the choice to do it. I usually play male but lately I've been going with female more. In ME3 I have 3 female playthroughs and 2 male playthroughs.. I just like the renegade femshep a lot.
In DA2 I played a female Hawke first. Still on my second playthrough (It's not as fun as other Bioware games unfortunetly..)

I usually do 3 playthroughs when the game is good (I made more than 4 in Origins)
In the 1º, I'm male and I try to make choices that I would do in real life.
2º, male, and I'm the ultimate hero, and I'm always ahead of my enemies
3º, female, so I can explore her romances, and maybe do something I didn't do in the others playthroughs. And... is always nice watching the lower half of the screen, if you know what I mean (lol, perverted joke:P)

I only play as a male, because I can relate better to the character.

I usually play female characters if I can help it, unless I want to romance someone who's only available to the menfolk.

I never play as the opposite sex. Don't know why, I just can't do it. I think ME is the only game I attempted to do it in, and i only made it about halfway as a femshep before giving up. Just not for me I guess

i only play male characters, but hey, i dont even customize my character's face or name so customizing gender would be too much

I play both, but in games with VO it depends alot on the actors. For example, I can;t stand Mark Meer, I have no idea why, but I find his "acting" to be like chewing on a mouthful of gravel. If it wasn't for a Femshep option, I wouldn't have been able to play the ME games at all. In RPG's I play multiple times, I usually try out all race/gender combos though, with a canon human dude that is generally as close to me as I can get it.

Yes. Anytime a game offers to play as female/male I always choose female. Why? The majority of the games I play has only a male lead character and its nice to change it up a bit to play as a female

If I can, I would play as female. Then, if I feel like it or it fits into a story I have in mind, I would play as a male but not as often. I play enough games with male protagonists.

I play as a male since I'm male in real life. Playing as the opposite gender breaks my immersion somewhat except in games where you have no choice and it makes sense to play as a female given the backstory of the character, etc..

I always play a female on my first playthrough. I usually create a male character on my next playthrough if I think it will impact my roleplay. I think it's worth it to put yourself in the shoes of the opposite gender, even if just for a game.

It's interesting to read that some guys can't play as a female because it breaks immersion (can't relate). As a female, I have no choice in many games and just got used to playing male characters.
'Tis a shame.
EDIT: One time, I was playing Fallout: New Vegas and in one playthrough, I decided to join the Legion as a female. When I was in their main camp, I saw an arena and asked if I can fight in it. The Legionaire said that woman aren't allowed to compete.
That...was deep.

Yes.Female characters pretty much all the time where the option exists. The female VAs are just easier to get into unlike their male counterparts, who take more time to grow on you.Jo Wyatt's VA I enjoyed the most. But thats just my experience of VAs.

I prefer to play as a female character (I'm a woman in real life). I have a male Mass Effect playthrough for the Tali romance, but other that, no.

I play both genders, usually male first. My characters in a game I'm only going to play through once or twice are all different, but with various shades of myself in there.
Dragon Age is different for me though, because of all the reactivity and the import feature. Every playthrough is an entirely different character with pure roleplay. With all the origins in DA:O, I just went for which story hit me the strongest first, and that was female city elf, and then a male warrior in DA2 off her import. I want my Wardens and Hawkes and Inquisitors, etc. to be, not just unique, but to play well off of each other if they ever meet at any point in later games. So across any particular canon, the protagonists are designed to play off of each other. I'm trying to maintain six DA 'worlds', but so far I'm still on my second playthrough of DA2. x1

In Mass Effect I do. But, In Dragon Age I've always enjoyed the female characters more --Especially F!Hawke.

Depends really...in Origins I had trouble playing as a male Elf or Dwarf and a female Human. But the Opposite of all those were no problem at all. Also characters like Terra and Lightning from Final Fantasy I have absolute no problem playing. But I had a hard time getting into Mirrors Edge, because I wasn't digging the main character(forgot her name)

That's usually the case when I roleplaying, although gender has never been a issue for me. I roleplay as any character I find interesting.

Really it just depends on what I feel like playing at the time. My canon character in DAO was female Dalish, in DA2 I played a male Hawke, etc.
I rarely try to RP myself in these kinds of games, rather I try to RP the character I created, so I don't ask myself "what would I do in this situation?" I ask "what would he/she do in this situation?" So gender really doesn't matter to me much.

I flip a coin, literally, except in games like NWN's, where I was playing more online modules than campaigns, and have a specific character in mind.
