I've never really found it difficult to get into the perspective of a girl. At the end of the day, you're going to be this person who's killing a bunch of people for various different reasons, gender be damned.

True ( the only issue I have with this post is calling women "girls").  I find people who can say that they can not related to oposite gender characters weird and generaly view them with additional caution.

Human brains are extremely hormone-driven, since I have tons of testosterone and completely lack the concentration of a hormone called estrogen a female of my species possesses -including special abilities like being pregnant and birthing children plus being a mother- I only have a very rough guess about how it feels to be female.
I will not pretend to have the ability to know what its like to be someone who is physically and mentally different than me, only based on a rough guess I made up with some facts and my imagination.
I will not sell that as ''oh I can totally relate!'' because that would make me a liar.

Dont get me wrong, I DO have a pretty good idea of how it might feel be to be female, but I'm certain that I'm completely wrong. As laughably wrong as those women who say that they know how it is to be a man and they can relate to them.

Women aren't that different. Okay, so you're going to grow hair on your face faster, but once you reach an old enough age the effect of hormones on your actual behaviour are going to be almost nothing.

Being pregnant is a big change, admittedly, but a moot point because Hawke/the Warden don't go around being pregnant.

Pft,  since you can't check other people chemical/biological composition in relation to yours, the only person you can understand is  YOU.  Nothing to do with race, gender, etc.   And yes, I have heard your reasoning, and yes people who use it are not my friends.

It depends on the character. In games like Skyrim or Dragon's Dogma or whatever, I always play female because I think women are more attractive, and it doesn't change anything much to play a man instead.

In ME, I have about 8 female Shepards and 2 male Shepards, because I really disliked his voice. Not the voice acting, just the sound of the voice/accent/whatever.

In DAO, most of my characters are female, but I have a handful of ugly males because of story differences (like romancing Morrigan, marrying Anora, differences in what NPCs say to you and the City Elf origin). In DA2, half are male and half are female, because I love male Hawke's voice as much as female Hawke's, even though gender changes very little in the game.

Tl;dr - in games with a silent protag and little focus on the character's personality, I play female for the aesthetics. In games with a voiced protag/focus on personality, I play either.

Being male and female is not apples and oranges

they are CONCEPTUALLY completely different. It would be like comparing apples and firetrucks

Being Female is something I cannot ever comprehend or even begin to understand because I am male and think like one. I perceive the world through a male point of view and live my life as a male. Being Female is something beyond my comprehension, and vice versa

I don't pretend to understand women, even if I have a girlfriend

I accept they are different, and don't get into useless debates regarding gender, social equality, and biological differences because the true difference is the way we perceive things.

Might I suggest seeing the world from point of view of a human?

Lol, I am being called western once again. What's up with you people ? :P
The only logical extention of your reasoning is that the only person you can understand is you - because of the biological/social differences other people bound to have

I'm not talking about the monotone, that doesn't bother me. Like I said, it's not the *voice acting*. I just think the voice itself sounds, I don't know, nasal? I can't really describe it.

Try using an armor that covers your face

listen to his voice

imagine yourself being sheppard

Also I really enjoyed his performance in Overlord and Citadel. The last line of Citadel "The Best" was amazing, much better than Hale's

I never said every is all equal and the same. I espically don't believe the 'same' part of the quotation. But being human is actually the base premise shared by all humans on earth. At least I hope that you are able to fit the human part of that condition.

Also we are discussing cultures instead of genders? Or genders roles in different cultures, because surely you regnonise that the last one is not universial?

I... what? Why would covering my face and imagining I'm him help me like his voice more?

I can't remember what he was like in Overlord, but Meer had some really good bits, especially in the romances. Some parts I like his performance more, some times I like Hale's more.

*skips the arguing*

After years of playing predominantly male characters due to lack of choice, I enjoy being able to mix it up. Some games give female characters better animations for instance. Nowadays I tend to pick female characters for casters since I don't really like guys in robes, and I pick males for melee because I prefer the way guys look in armor.

I also do this in multiplayer games, and only the few ignorant players who think multiplayer = dating service seem to get confused. :P

My first and second play through are normally male, because I'm trying to fixes my characters face, and choice I want to do over. Then, I start my female play through to see the difference in the character, the world perspective of that character, and armor. I remember have at one having character profiles in DA:O just for the world perspective.

I don't do self insert characters. But I do see what you're doing, and I'm not arguing over voice actors.

I should go.
