Meer voices monotone Sheppard on purpose so male players can imagine themselves to be Sheppard

I'm not talking about the monotone, that doesn't bother me. Like I said, it's not the *voice acting*. I just think the voice itself sounds, I don't know, nasal? I can't really describe it.

Try using an armor that covers your face

listen to his voice

imagine yourself being sheppard

Also I really enjoyed his performance in Overlord and Citadel. The last line of Citadel "The Best" was amazing, much better than Hale's

I... what? Why would covering my face and imagining I'm him help me like his voice more?

I can't remember what he was like in Overlord, but Meer had some really good bits, especially in the romances. Some parts I like his performance more, some times I like Hale's more.

self insert immersion, pretend that, that is your in the game.

that was the whole point of male sheppard

Hale simply voices her own canon

Hmm, do you really pretend the character is you ? How can you do it ? Sheppard is a space marine from the future, and you are not. Your cultural background is differnt from his (unless you are from the future that is).

*skips the arguing*

After years of playing predominantly male characters due to lack of choice, I enjoy being able to mix it up. Some games give female characters better animations for instance. Nowadays I tend to pick female characters for casters since I don't really like guys in robes, and I pick males for melee because I prefer the way guys look in armor.

I also do this in multiplayer games, and only the few ignorant players who think multiplayer = dating service seem to get confused. :P

Arguing aside I mostly only play female simply because of the bolded fact. That said I do make expections and play male if I think that there is a compelling story reason to do so.

Currently I am for example thinking about playing a male in fire emblem awakening simply to get the other child and also see a specific other scene, which I want to experience 'first handly'. (Ie. Playing the scene in my own playthrough instead of only seeing it on youtube).

You just insert yourself, even if you are not sheppard you are controlling his actions and by proxy he is you

the monotone voice acts as a good bridge too

I find people who can say that they can not related to oposite gender characters weird and generaly view them with additional caution.

Human brains are extremely hormone-driven, since I have tons of testosterone and completely lack the concentration of a hormone called estrogen a female of my species possesses -including special abilities like being pregnant and birthing children plus being a mother- I only have a very rough guess about how it feels to be female.
I will not pretend to have the ability to know what its like to be someone who is physically and mentally different than me, only based on a rough guess I made up with some facts and my imagination.
I will not sell that as ''oh I can totally relate!'' because that would make me a liar.

Dont get me wrong, I DO have a pretty good idea of how it might feel be to be female, but I'm certain that I'm completely wrong. As laughably wrong as those women who say that they know how it is to be a man and they can relate to them.

Women have testosterone, too. But men don't have estrogen (I don't think). Hormones do influence us in some small ways... our base reactions to stuff. How likely you are to cry over something or how likely you are to act aggressively.

However, hormones are not the only factors in such situations.

If you were raised by an abusive person, you might become more or less aggressive as an adult, regardless of sex. If you were hit as a child, you might be more (or less) likely to hit as an adult (super simple example).

Also keep in mind that the desire for children and the so-called "mothering" instinct are cultural concepts for the most part. For example, I am female and have no desire to adopt or birth children. I also have no desire to be in a longterm relationship. I am 32 (for reference).

On the other hand, many men have strong urges to settle down and start families.

Just keep in mind that while sex is biological, gender is a social construct. Most characteristics that we attribute to sex are actually attributed to gender (and hence artificial).

But shouldn’t you experience the profound disconnect with this character because of the difference between you and him ?

It's not very hard to suspend your disbelief. It was obviously easier in DAO because silent protagonist

Men do have estrogen

also testosterone and estrogen levels are prevailently high in modern society because of water recycling filters that do not effectively filter out hormones

for example in places like Las Vegas and Montreal, the water is filled with so many leftover substances

I typically run at least one female and one male playthrough so I can get the experience of both and check out different LI scenes.

My first playthrough is always with a female character, though, because I'm female and that's always my most personal, true roleplay playthrough, where I make the decisions I would make if this were real life and I really were in this world.

Hmmmmm. So how can you tell which difference matter in the long run ? Lets say I have an additional pair of neck ribs, most people on Earth don't have. Does it make you unable to relate to me?   - Biological difference -> can't relate. You said that all cultures are drastically different from each other - Why can you suspend your disbelief for the Future Earth Sheppard or Ferelden Warden ? You shouldn’t be able to.

superficial differences mean nothing

I relate to the actions and how I made those desicions for their stead, making them an extension of me

Not all off us wish to play self-insert. I practically never do or only insert aspects of myself.

That said. I find it highly disturbing that you can suspend disbelief long enough to imagine that you are a space-marine hundred of year into the future with a cultral background where other sentinent beings exist and earths culture itself are fundementally different from yours, but you can't imagine how it is to be a woman in your own culture.

You chance of getting shepards point of view correctly are less than a contemporary woman from your own culture because at least you can be fairly sure that the contemporary woman from your own culture has heard of the culture norms you grew up with. You have no such gurantee with shephard.

obviously not literally and 100% "dedicated" self insert mary sue garbage. My first playthroughs usually involve myself in the protagonist's shoes, then my second and third are female/alien/opposite morality characters that roleplay as different people

Mary Sues are not only self insert, they are wish fullfillment too. The last part being just as important.

I just can't rp a female.
