Yes, my main Warden play throughs have been females and all my Hawkes have been male. A lot has to do with the character creator (as to how attractive I can make them look, which is incredibly shallow) and voice (if the PC talks). For example, I really prefer the male Hawke's voice and Jennifer Hale's voice for Shepard in ME.

I never stick to the same gender for all RPGs that I play. That's what I love about them!

I'm a female and I always play as a male in RPGs. I don't really know why.

Well its kinda "forced" on me 80% of the time with the games I play for the past 20 years - so I really dont have a choice in the matter soooo: yes I do, OP. And tbh I dont care. I have no real qualms, when theyre decent games with a plot and or characters (even gameplay) that I like - it really doesn't matter to me.. but I will admit its nice (refreshing) to get a respectable female protagonist option every now and again..

Same here.

Personally, if I get the choice to play a female protagonist, I jump at it. Which is why I've never had a male Warden, Shepard, or Hawke.

Since most games on the market have a fixed 'manly man' protagonist, when given the choice for gender I always pick female first. Then I try to play as a male.

I usually have a couple of female playthroughs and a couple of male playthroughs, just to explore all the classes and romance options (and in DA2's case, dominant personalities as well). I can't stand leaving any parts of Bioware games unseen :)

Why not? One thing I love about DA games is their replayability. Finish the game with different type of hero, different personality, and different gender is pretty fun IMO. Each play through give you a new experience :)

I don't find playing female to be fun. Usually I'll just watch my girlfriend playthrough if I want to see the game play out differently from a female protagonist POV.

Yes. I play males. They always turn out better looking.

I am a male and I tend to play female characters because usually character creators don't allow me to make an attractive ( to my tastes ) male character, and/or because I don't like the male voice actor most of the time. And well I am the kind of person that values aesthetics of their character.
Played a female character in Skyrim too.

My issues too but in reverse.

Seems we are a lot less picky and critical about the opposite gender than our own huh? ^_^

I play as both genders. I usually do a male playthrough first and after that it's fairly balanced between the two. I find it easier to roleplay someone vastly different than myself with female characters, since I'm already in a different mindset because of the gender difference. I usually only do romances as a male character romancing a female NPC. I don't know why, but most of my female PCs are straight women who just have no interest in any of their current companions. (not that there's anything wrong with homosexuality in general.  There just usually isn't a romancable NPC that would fit with my characters.)

EDIT:  Just looked up my DA2 characters, and here's the final tally for me:
Started: 10 male, 11 female
Finished: 2 male, 1 female

The one female Hawke who finished was my second and favorite playthrough, and is my canon Hawke for DA3.

My DAO & DAA games never synched, but my canon Warden is the human noble male.

I also romance female characters (as a male character), but i'm straight. For some reason the people i've met seem to think the gender I choose and the gender I romance has something to do with sexuality.

Me too.

I've never thought that. The PC is just another character in the story to me. Its like reading a romance novel when it switches to the man's POV.

Oh boy.. finding a "worthy" candidate of my own gender for my opposite gender PC is even harder than trying to make a PC of my own gender that I would like. I don't even remember the last time I did it. :?

All the time. You get extra and more interesting dialogue for it (Daveth and Jory comment on it, Alistair does and you can ask him about other female Wardens, the conversation with Sten, ect), and I love female Hawke's voice.

It depends on the people. Some straight people find difficult to roleplay a character attracted to a NPC of the same sex, as some homosexual people find difficult to roleplay a PC attracted to NPCs of the opposite gender, regardless of the gender of their PC. I think it might be more difficult than roleplay a PC of a different sex than yours (I'm not sure, since I don't have this "problem", when roleplaying a character).

I'll do a male character first and then, if it was a good experience, a female character to see if there are many differences. ~_^

I play as both male and female characters.  My preference differs by game.  Overall, I'd say it's about 50/50..

Play almost universally male characters. I tried in ME2 and Skyrim to play as a female character, but I couldn't get into it. Call it what you will.

There is one rationalization for you: the screaming. The one that sticks out immediately is the mech class in Borderlands 2. Absolutely awesome ability, but I hated how she screamed like hell every time you got scratched. I couldn't stand it.

For my part, I find being straight makes it easier to create a female character (just fiddle with her options until I find something attractive), and only slightly harder to play one. It must be said that part of it is being able to romance Leiliana instead of the male options, but I didn't have too much trouble romancing Zevran with a character who I thought called for it.
