Do you play a character of the opposite sex than you?

Exactly. When I talk to people about my male characters romancing females they give me a "oh you roll that way" look, especially the non-gamers. When I first played DAO my friends thought it was strange that I was a M!Cousland romancing Morrigan. I think if you're comfortable with who you are and if you are comfortable with your sexuality playing opposite sex characters that romance the same or opposite gender isn't a problem.Youth4Ever wrote...

I also romance female characters (as a male character), but i'm straight.I've never thought that. The PC is just another character in the story to me. Its like reading a romance novel when it switches to the man's POV.For some reason the people i've met seem to think the gender I choose and the gender I romance has something to do with sexuality.

I try not to let who I am as a person, define how I roleplay a character, because it's not as if I'm the character. The character is a person in a world different to mine, and they are not me. The main reason to roleplay a character is to play them with a specific personality. If you make choices that conflict with a character's personality, then you are no longer roleplaying. Instead, you're just playing through the game. It's not roleplaying if you play multiple genders and/or races for the sake of getting different responses from the game - you have to actually think about the person's personality and feelings.

Of special note was the city elf origin in DAO. My fifth warden was a female city elf, who was traumatized by her experience with Vaughan, which made her distrustful and aloof for much of the game. My sixth warden was a male city elf, who was intimidated by Vaughan's threat that the Alienage would burn, and abandoned Shianni. He hated himself for it, and never recovered emotionally. I can't really see a male becoming distrustful of every other male due to his cousin being raped, and I think it would take a lot more for a female to have abandoned Shianni.

But I think something had finally clicked in my brain over the last five years or so. Because when I was growing up all my made up characters whether from Sonic, TNMT, Pokémon, etc were all males. There wasn't a single female character running around in my brain for years. Even at school when we would play/sing a "Sleeping Beauty" thing in class. I wanted to be the bloody prince that saved the princess! Maybe growing up I thought that only men could be strong. But now that I'm older I've come to realise that women can be just as strong or stronger then there male counterparts.

That said, after I've played through the game as my usual characters, I create an entirely new character at random: (eg. I use a random number generator to choose my gender, class, background, sexuality and the first few dialogue options which generates a personality)

For DAO, it was the voice sets and the running animations for women (I only played a female HN all the way through).
For DAII, FemHawke's voice actor just didn't really seem to give it enough emotion. And I dunno, her voice wasn't one I was particularly fond of.

Are you female and play a male who is attracted to other females? To other males? Are you a straight female and play a female lesbian? Etc.
Since many view gender as a social construct, I thought sexual preference outside RL norms would be an interesting conversation piece.

I'm a female who plays as a male who romances (attracted to) female characters and it seems a couple of females on this thread are the same way as well. I agree, it's an intresting topic and one that I don't see getting talked about often.Fast Jimmy wrote...
I think a more interesting question may be to ask if people play a different sexual orientation than they are in real life.

For example, in DAO, I created a male Warden that romanced Morrigan(I had multiple characters of all sorts that romanced everyone actually but I'm referring to my default, the one I carried over)
In DA2(ugh), I created a FemHawke that romanced Isabella(only played the game fully once).
So what will happen in DA3? Dunno.

I am the same as DomRod95. I'm pretty attached to my Warden, for example, and tend to recreate him when I can, and romance female characters in so doing.

Same. My M!Cousland romances Morrigan, fathers the OGB, and marries Anora in nearly every playthrough I've used the HN. I wish he and Anora could be a real couple.WardenWade wrote...

Mine did the same except for Anora, i'm marrying her in my current playthrough even though playing on xbox means Alistair will be exiled.Youth4Ever wrote...

Edit: If you like fanfiction I suggest reading Corin , it's the best Cousland/Anora fanfic i've read.

I'm a straight female and I've played as straight males in DA and ME.Fast Jimmy wrote...

In Fallout New Vegas there is no romance but I choose the Confirmed Bachelor perk for my male characters if I don't need anything else. +10% damge bonus to the same-sex that stacks with other damage bonuses and the majority of elite enemies are male-- extremely so if you side with the NCR and fight against Caesar's Legion. Its not the best perk in the world but I've taken it twice.
I did select the Confirmed Bachelor lines when offered most of the time because why not? It either offered more dialogue or worked as a DA style persuade option that was not only used in conversations to express romantic intent but used with a variety of characters in a lot of different contexts. It was often humorous. Especially if you have low intelligence. I think I used it as a flirt option only once though and it brought up sexuality in the NCR and Caesar's Legion.
My female character in New Vegas used the Black Widow perk for the same reasons mentioned before-- +10% damage against male enemies etc. And she slept with Benny before killing him at the Tops.
Woud I RP a gay male or a lesbian female in DA or ME? No. I likely wouldn't have tried it in Fallout if I didn't get the damage bonus or think the alternative perk was kinda useless.
I thought Mark Vanderloo in his prime was great looking, I didn't like Hale's Fem!Shep voice, I love Ashley as a character and I like her romance arc with Shepard, I also like Miranda and Tali but have zero interest in Garrus or Thane or the other Fem!Shep romances, so default Male!Shep was a no brainer for me.
I loved my M!Cousland in Origins. The second best character I have ever been able to create in a game aesthetically. My favorite is my female Pawn in Dragon's Dogma-- I wanted to trade her with my friends she was so awesome and female pawns get used more than males so I made my PC male and balanced him as everything she wasn't. I couldn't make a good female character with the vanilla CC in DA and I can't use mods because I play on the console. I don't care for Alistair much. I love Morrigan's character and importance to the story. I love Anora and the combo she can make with a male Warden. It all came together well.
I couldn't make a good male or female from scratch in DA2-- I thought the CC was rather limited and everyone's cheeks looked like they were storing nuts for the winter and I didn't like the default female Hawke so I used the default male Hawke. Even he could use improvement in-game but I liked him enough and I liked his voice. I did like Fem!Hawke's voice unlike Fem!Shep though. I haven't done a Fem!Hawke playthrough but I want to eventually because I adore Sebastian and would love to romance him.
