Do you play a character of the opposite sex than you?

I have multiple FemSheps that have finished 1 and 2 and are waiting for their turn at 3.
So yes, but I'm more likely to play and finish with male characters.

Default male Hawke is a awful looking character and in no way a badass, which the trailers portray him as. Custom male Hawke will still not be badass but instead look even worse than the goofy default male Hawke available.
Huh. I thought Default male Hawke was smoking hot. Provided that he keeps the beard, that is - I've seen someone mod it off him and the result wasn't pretty.

Does one have a grating voice? Avoid it.
Does one have a noticeably better voice actor? Pick that one.
Do the women look like roughtly carved men with broad shoulders and man-hands? Man it is.
Do the women go the other way and look distorted in their view? Dude it is.
I play my favourite games several times over, so I'll typically play as both genders eventually. I have noticed I tend towards male though, despite being female myself. However a bit of RP comes into that - I tend to create characters very different from me because I am NOT PLAYING ME.

Yes. Anytime a game offers to play as female/male I always choose female. Why? The majority of the games I play has only a male lead character and its nice to change it up a bit to play as a female

If given the option I always choose female first. I have no male wardens at all. I do have a male Hawke for the Isabela romance. I have two separate Male Shepard's, one for Tali (because I can't romance her as a female ;/) and one for Jack that went the way of Cortez in the end.
I can never bring myself to play male in MMo's, even SwToR, because if given the opportunity to play my own gender, I will jump at it every chance I get.
I've yet to have a female be a lesbian. In DAo I just couldn't romance Leliana. She annoys me. In Da2 My girls usually end up with Fenris. In ME my girls always gravitate towards the menfolk as well (Kaidan, Garrus, Thane), though I could easily see one of them being bisexual if Tali was romancable by females -- or if my canon wasn't locked into Garrus I could easily see her going after Trainor.
Not to say that I don't ENJOY the idea of making out with hot women. The characters just never seem to go that direction with out heavy metagaming on my part. My males never romance who I planed them to romance either. My Tali-shepard actually was meant for Miranda. Some how he talked me into Tali ;p Just like my male Hawke was meant for Anders, but Isabela swooped in and stole him away.
...and this got long. Yea. Answer to the question is -- I'm female and I play female if given the chance, though I do enjoy male playthroughs as a secondary.

Exactly. When I talk to people about my male characters romancing females they give me a "oh you roll that way" look, especially the non-gamers. When I first played DAO my friends thought it was strange that I was a M!Cousland romancing Morrigan. I think if you're comfortable with who you are and if you are comfortable with your sexuality playing opposite sex characters that romance the same or opposite gender isn't a problem.Youth4Ever wrote...

I also romance female characters (as a male character), but i'm straight.I've never thought that. The PC is just another character in the story to me. Its like reading a romance novel when it switches to the man's POV.For some reason the people i've met seem to think the gender I choose and the gender I romance has something to do with sexuality.
As a heterosexual female, romancing Leliana as a heterosexual male character always felt very natural to me.

This. I enjoy character creation far too much to limit myself to only half the options.

As a rule, any male PC I play is gay, not because I have an issue with romancing female NPCs but because there's never been one that I liked enough to bother. If I'm curious I just watch hubby. He has about half and half but his female characters are generally chaste.

I tried playing a male character in several games, but I can't invest in it fully in most RPGs because I would inevitable image my male charcters as a bit of myself - and it mostly fails because I don't see myself as anything remote heroic, or more importantly as a leader of people. The male fictional game characters that I like are Garrett (Thief series), JC Denton and Adam Jenson (Deus Ex) and Corvo Attano (Dishonored) - mostly rogue-like solo acts.
I will not deny that for me, part of the allure of playing female characters as a male is partly for eye-candy (especially with the 3D graphics of recent games). However, in most RPGs, I like to build and play female characters based on what I would admire in a female, kickass defenders of justice and the common people. Even back with Baldur's Gate 2 where characters are rendered in 2D sprites, my female characters fall on the line of frontline buttkickers of evil (Paladin, Ranger/Cleric, Swashbuckler) - my BG2 male character is modelled on the lines of my party's forward scout and general handyman Fighter/Mage/Thief.

I think a more interesting question may be to ask if people play a different sexual orientation than they are in real life.
Are you female and play a male who is attracted to other females? To other males? Are you a straight female and play a female lesbian? Etc.
Since many view gender as a social construct, I thought sexual preference outside RL norms would be an interesting conversation piece.
I'm a straight male who's canon character in DA:O was a female Dalish that I fully intended to be straight, but then Leliana came along and I threw that idea out the window. :3

To answer this question as well, I play personalites, and pick romances that fit personality best. Gender is rarely a factor romantically. Only for the character's visuals.
Which isn't to say I haven't made characters specifically with the intention of being a good fit with an NPC I haven't seen a romance with yet. But that usually happens on much later replays.

I was thinking about adding that but I figured a couple of people on the forums would start trolling and the conversation would turn ugly fast. I for one support different sexual orientations in games but I tend to play my characters straight even when playing as a guy.

DA:O was mostly female (although I have played each origin with both sexes and all possible classes at least once) and DA:2 was mostly male.
