I do still intend to try out male PCs at some point, though - to try out some of the male-only romances if nothing else.

its a purely aesthetic choice since sexism doesn't exist and everyone is bisexual in Thedas.
Oh please.
Also, how on earth were you able to register under a name like that??

When It comes to pre-defined characters I prefer to play female ones, because badass female characters are generally more interesting and appealing to me than male ones.

I find it interesting that so many in the industry are obsessed with providing male gamers with male PCs, when it seems like at least half the male gamers here play female PCs as often or more often than male PCs when given the choice. It just goes to show you how much marketing types actually know...... (very little)
You're talking about people...who not only plays Bioware games and are passionate enough to log-on into the forum. I'm pretty sure that statistic is way too skewed to have any value in regard to the market as a whole. I've known plenty of people who out right rejects playing a game without a male protagonist especially in genre such as action/shooter games so the crowd definitely exist.

I'm not sure how skewed it is. It might be quite skewed as you suggest, or it might not. Only a few of those who mentioned playing both genders have said they do so in order to get all of the stories, and many were commenting about how they do so in every game that has gender choice. So, it's more widespread than just what hardcore DA players do within the game. Also, didn't BioWare say that something like 70% of all Hawkes made were female? ::Looks it up:: 72.2% in fact, according to this infographic, which is based on some stats BioWare gave out at PAX East:

So, unless 3/4 of DA players are women (possible but unlikely), then there's a definite segment of male gamers who prefer to play as female, or at least prefered F!Hawke in DA2. If anything it looks like this thread underrepresents this trend.

However, I often roll female characters on second playthroughs and beyond. I don't need to use my own mindset for these characters, and I also like to change it up a bit from my first playthrough to experience more of the various options within the game, such as the different voice actors and romance options.
I also find it much easier to create attractive female characters than male characters. Most people find it easier to create good-looking characters if they're attracted to that sex, I assume?

Not really. Dragon's Dogma, a game with a not exactly huge budget, has a character creator that is so in-depth that you can create children or old people, very muscular or very skinny or very fat, very tall or very short. You name a combination of traits, and DD lets you do it. DA:I really could stand to be DD's level.

ME series: Played all male, tried playing a female Shepard but couldn't get past the voice.
DA2: All male Hawkes, tried a female and didn't like it.
Skyrim: I began playing a while ago and so far only have one character who is a female.
So it looks like I love to play male characters especially when they are voiced and I can romance whomever I want. But I think the voice probably does it for me as I have no problem playing a silent female lead.
btw, I'm a woman
