You don't need redeeming characters for a great story.

Best show, along with Spartacus. I totally forgot about Game of Bores because of it.

Only thing I dislike is the horrible haircuts.

Possibly, but currently do not care what occurs to anyone.

The battles, costumes and cinematography are great. The characters look the part, but the writing does little to make them compelling. Also, too many Viking cliches, you'd think Hirst would have done his homework.

We love it, and I've been surprised at the historical accuracy and how they've combined nerdiness with action and drama. Definitely my top show atm.

It's worth it to go to the website and watch the background videos. They do some of the Norse mythology ones from Floki's perspective:wub:  I love the animations as well.

What do you find cliche'd?  It's dramatized, but seems pretty accurate to me.

I just love the show... despite its inaccurate in depicting "political and social system" at that time and some other minor things - love it. The whole thing with jarl was a bit bent to create an antagonist.

I find it captivating, and I just love the expressions Ragnar Lothbrok and Floki show - their inner demons and trickster glimmering in the eye XD

The opening song and drowning men and things is just... underwater love ^_^

I'm really enjoying the show. I especially like how they handle language and not sugar coating the Viking culture. Its just really cool how they portray the language and cultural barrier when the Vikings interact with other people.

I just wish the long bearded Viking guy (13th warrior guy/ Ulfric from Skyrim) wasn't killed off so soon!

Vladimir Kulich will always be the first at the gates of Valhalla.

^ You know, he actually seemed kinda shocked to be killed off so quickly (he posted something on Facebook about it). Made me sad. He was the best viking on the show!

Well, except for Floki. I just love that character. Freaking awesome. Posted Image

Anyway, we've been watching it since the first episode, and have made it a weekly staple. For a little while there, we had to juggle The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Vikings, because of time slot conflicts, but we always made sure to catch it. Even paid for the episode we missed while on vacation, just so we wouldn't miss a second of it.

Yeah, the early death of Vladimir Kulich's character was surprising and sad - what a viking!

What inaccuracies are you referring to?  I've been shocked at how accurate it's been.  Some things are condensed and simplified for dramatic purposes, but it's far and away the best historical drama I've seen.  Usually historical adaptations are cringeworthy.

The jarl was definitely set up as the antagonist, but I thought they did an excellent job of showing how he became as he was, and of making him human and sympathetic.  Thanks in part to Gabriel Byrne and Jessamyn Gilsig's acting.

I find it captivating, and I just love the expressions Ragnar Lothbrok and Floki show - their inner demons and trickster glimmering in the eye XD

Travis Fimmel was the biggest surprise of the series for me.  When I first saw pictures of him and that they had cast him as the main protagonist, I was really skeptical, but he's such a perfect combination of badass, mischievous, sympathetic and menacing.  Actually add Lagertha to that, as well.  Katheryn Winnick is likewise perfectly cast.  I'm hoping she gets back to being a kickbutt shieldmaiden after this week's sad turn.

For starters it is shown that the stagnant jarl dominating the whole Thing with iron hand, and the whole "new ideas" of Ragnar are met with dissent. Its exactly the opposite to the Viking Age knowledge.
Viking Age constitued in old tradition — a tradition of freedom and democracy. The new idea that came with christianisation was about centralization and autocracy. So you see its all backwards.

Things were not egalitarian assemblies, every free man had a voice, either poor man or a chieftain. In theory they had equal rights.Authority was held with 12-man courts and Lawspeakers.

Either way, jarl dominates the Thing completely, such a way would never be tolerated by vikings in their age....

Oh well, I can get past that, coz me knows the real story behind 'em pictures ;D
Sad thing is its a HISTORY channel and it might just propell the wrong idea bout the times stuffing young generation minds with innacurate hollywood cliched tropes.

The Norse had kings emerge, who no doubt started as powerful jarls, and in fact you don't see people tolerating Jarl Haraldson's behavior- the whole plot of season 1 is about people rebelling against his heavy-handed ways.  So again, I'm not sure where the criticism comes in that the depiction is inaccurate.

The guys from Enslaved should be hired as figurants or something. They are real, modern day Vikings.

I like Travis Fimmel, but he is still too much a pretty boy.

And Lagertha is a super model, created by Odin by merging the DNA of his favored Valkyries, Scarlett Johansson and Elisha Cuthbert.

LOL, I don't mind that he's eye candy in addition to being badass. The actress who plays Lagertha has a martial arts background. According to her wiki page, she was a black belt at age 13 and started 3 martial arts schools by the time she was 21. So, she comes by her shieldmaiden grit honestly.
