As for the premise itself, that was rather exactly what I was expecting (although still in the 3rd person perspective).* This way the diverse choices that plagued the developers in three get to be ignored in service of a more focused, 'immersive' (read: 'explosions') experience, while the marketing before release gets to blame players for that decision.
'We had a story to tell that players love, but we realised that we didn't want to invalidate any of the decisions that they might have made in the original trilogy. So we stripped that confusing branching storyline stuff back and made it a more intense, personal story. More about the character, and their experience in this crucial point of the Mass Effect lore. ...You know, like players have always wanted. ...Because of
players.'
EDIT:
* Indeed, didn't the Citadel DLC drop all sorts of hints about the First Contact wars, and Anderson's activities throughout it? (I've not actually played that DLC, so that is a legitimate question...)
