If it's a prequel I demand the return of overheating weapons.

If this is true, then Bioware can't say anymore that listens to its fans. This is totally the opposite of what is asked.

Thinking about it... I think the thing that bothers me most is length. Look at the most recent, popular, well received by fans fps; Bioshock Infinite. Great game, but how long does it take to beat it? 2 days? Tops? I don't want that happening to Mass Effect.

Well while i might be convinced to give a prequel a go, if it is a straught shooter as claimed rather than an RPG i won't be touching it with a ten foot barge pole.

Robert Knapp wrote in 1944...

"Where humor is designed to provoke laughter, rumor begs for belief."

Based on his study of the newspaper column, Knapp divided [...] rumors into three types:
  • Pipe dream rumors: reflect public desires and wished-for
    outcomes.
  • Bogie or fear rumors reflect feared outcomes.
  • Wedge-driving rumors intend to undermine group loyalty or
    interpersonal relations

Knapp also found that negative rumors were more likely to be disseminated than positive rumors.

In all seriousness, I can't think of a better, well I guess worse, way to alienate your fan base and kill the franchise than to make it a FPS and a prequel. I think it's just a rumor, but with EA and BioWare you never know. So..... yeah, guess we just wait and see. If it is a FPS I'll play it just to experience the terribleness of it, I don't plan on purchasing ME4 anyways, but I can't wait for the inevitable sh!t storm it will cause.

Would not surprise me, but I would hope not, however I find myself not really looking forward to ME4 anyway so perhaps I am no longer the market that BW are targeting these days.

Who knows what will happen but from the article it sounds like Hudson's new game is gonna be awesome and more suited for ME fans than whatever this ME4 game is supposed to be.

Well, if it is a first person shooter that leaves me out.

Yeah, I doubt I'd be that interested if it was a 1st person either - there's just some games I prefer to be 3rd person, and ME is one of them.

it's likely EA is still trying to kill CoD and the Mass Effect franchise is the next virgin sacrifice to volcano since battlefield and metal of honor can't get it done.

It's an universe where the CatalyStalin exists, so it's story is already broken. The only ME I would support is a reboot without this creepy child.

Hmm a FPS/RPG could be fun if done right..Would be cool to play Mass effect from the first person view, not the third person. However my major concerns would be; How much of the RPG element will be lost in this game? Will we still be able to make our character "Ours"? Will we still get to make choices like the last three games of Mass effect? and etc etc..

I can't think of a worse idea.
Though it is what it is: a rumor. How often are they actually right?

To be honest i used to hate FPS games, Half life and Halo along with deus ex changed that, Nowadays im beggining to tire of playing TPS games as they're awfully similar( Dead space, Gears, Resi, ME ) ...So i wouldnt be against this rumor even though it's blatantly false....

If you don't like the idea of a prequel, why would you like the idea of the ME3 ending? These things go together.

Anyways, I gotta say... it's nice to see so many haterz on the thread. But you are just the vocal minority. The majority are like totes happy with a FPS.

How do you do the First Contact war in a whole game?

The turians attacked a human fleet and followed an escaping vessel to Shanxi. Shanxi fell, the Alliance came to retake it, that is all. The council intervened, the war never escalated. Shanxi would be the only location the whole game could take place.

They could always retcon it. It's not like there are no precedents.

Besides, don't the Halo games take place on a single planet? I know Reach does, it's the only one I've played.

-rescue missions
-recovery missions
-intel gathering missions
-capture missions
-reinforcing missions
-stealth missions

wow a whole lot.

A whole game based on a giant retcon?

It would be a good plot for the movie though. Mass Effect would be difficult to establish as a movie franchise first because non-gamer audience are confronted with a universe that has already been established for years yet they don't know anything about all those species, the Mass Effect and so on. If you instead set the First Contact War at the beginning of the movie franchise, the audience is confronted with a scenario that is rather easy to understand, you go about 150 years in the future and the discovery of the prothean ruins on Mars as well as the Mass Effect, after that the discovery of the Charon and other Mass Relays and the colonization of other planets could easily be dealt with in a narrated prologue. Then, the audience could discover the turians together with the characters in the movie. They are an unknown power that attack immediately and conquer their colony, then the Alliance rises and takes Shanxi back, at the end of the movie the council steps in and we learn that the turians are in fact part of a galactic community of various species, a community that isn't necessarily aggressive.

The battles for Shanxi don't provide enough action scenes for a Mass Effect game, but easily enough for a 2-3 hours movie that focuses on dialogue and alien encounters in the tradition of Star Trek.

Edit @ Artifex: I'm not saying that you can't stretch the content for a whole game. But you can't set an entire Mass Effect game on a single planet.

If this Sachel figure is pulling that out of the ass to start a fire on BSN... 10/10 Successful troll is very successful.
If it's true, it's already condracting the developers wish for the game. The things we have gotten to know and love about this universe extends far beyond humanity vs turians in a war we know the ending of. I'm for a prequel ('prequel' does not always mean story which ending is known), but a story that is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Even if it's not reated to the First Contact War directly, it is a bad time to set it, due to Humanity not being integrated into the galactic society before 2165.

sounds like a halo prequel , first contact.... it might be good if it involved flashbacks revealing secrets about the relay incident..maybe the turians/humans found something on shanxi... an artifact... then fastworward to the present revealing more about the reaper war and how it ended(your choice) .. then onto the future as a straight sequel...
