FPS playing as a character I can't see and don't care about, playing through events that I already know the outcome of.

Yep, sounds like a winner to me.

I'm sure they'll be microtransactions, too!

An FPS in the MEU?

Some may like the idea but me, I'd NEVER buy it or have even the slightest interest in it.

FPS is a giant middle finger. If true, ME is FUBAR.

How is it a middle finger? Ever played Half Life 2? Or Deus Ex? Or Borderlands? What the hell are you people on about?

The difference is all of the games you mentioned didn't begin as RPGs, even if there are some RPG elements.

Mass Effect morphing from an RPG series into a pure FPS would rightly rankle, as there are no shortage of FPS games on the market. In fact if anything the market is over saturated with shooters. Generally speaking it is a lot more rare to find a decent RPG on the market than it is to find a decent shooters.

There is also a high probability that this would not be a one shot deal and the switch would become permanent. Game development companies are no different than any other corporation in that they entirely motivated by profit. If a Mass Effect FPS far outsold previous Mass Effect RPGs, you can guarantee there would never be another Mass Effect RPG. Any sequels would be FPS games as well. Just look at Warcraft. That began as a popular RTS series. Once it morphed into an MMO that far outstripped previous Warcraft RTS games in profit generated, there never was another Warcraft RTS game. The last Warcraft RTS game released was in 2003, ten years ago.

With all of the above in mind it should come at no suprise that most RPG fans would be horrified by a Mass Effect FPS. It would represent the death of yet another RPG series in favor of a genre in which there are no shortage of titles to choose from already.

Also any time a game series tosses out features that were generally well received by fans and replaces them with something else, it tends to anger fans of that series because it sens a message that the company has decided to cater to a different market instead of long-term fans. This is true regardless of what genre that game series falls in.

Isn't this is where someone perhaps Mr Priestly would come in and say " Its their game, their story, if you don't like it, don't buy it?"

"Too expansive, don't buy."
"Don't think you'd like it, don't buy."

It is their game after all. They *can* do anything they want.
Why bother to listen to feedback?

Indeed.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to find a really decent cRPG?  believe me, I've looked.  Bioware was one of the few to do consistently well at it.  Abandoning that to make quick and easy cash in an already overly bloated market would be a gaming tragedy

With the sheer amount of money ME3 mp made them, they would be blind to try and change the formula up so drastically. If we wanted a FPS we'd be playing Battlefield.

Just because it's on Frostbite doesn't mean it's going to be FPS. Unreal is a FPS engine but both Gears and ME made good TPS gameplay out of it.

Very amused that some random posting a comment on another website has spawned seven pages of complaining as if Bioware made an official announcement.

The idea of the First contact War as the setting for the next game seems unlikely to me. What's the point of opening us up to the wider galaxy in the first trilogy just to narrow down the setting to a small conflict between two species? If anything, I expect (and hope) the next game in the series to have an even wider variety of species as potential squadmates. I don't want to get stuck playing with only humans and turians.

Because this is just another attempt by EA to topple COD. It will go badly  for Bioware and it may cause them to close up shop. All the most popular games out on the maret won't go away because a new game comes out. Be it the new WoW killer or CoD killer. The only way those games fall is if the games themselves fail to deliver. People won't abandoned a game for anther just because it claims to do the same thing only better that never works out. What these companies need to realize is that copying a formula of a successful franchise will not earn them sales.  They need to branch out and try different and new things. Bioware is one of the few big names that make RPGs. They have a ninche in the market. They should focus on this aspect because if they go down the road of trying to copy CoD it will go badly for them

i really dont see the value in arguing that bioware wont make an fps becouse of thier trackrecord.

they have done so many things *wrong* and with EA pushing to make everything more GoW
and ultimately CoD, and the promise of microtransactions in all future EA titels would you really be suprised?
anything to get more units sold = EA's way of buisness.
with the doctors gone. and also the Multiplay-studio doing the entire game.
this would acually fit into the direction Bio/EA are heading at.

its like saying xbox720 wont require permanent internet connection to play becouse
they learned from sim city and diablo......

EA never learn and they allways run studios in to the ground or make em make mediocre
mainstream appealing games.

allthought i dont belive this either, but for other reasons i rather not indulge in
since i dont want to offend anyone with my own ignorant worldviews :D

EDIT: can anyone tell me what "engine" they are using for "ME4" and what kind of games that engine
is most suted for??? :D:P

This is clearly false, just someone trolling GameFront, and they're stupid for even reporting on it. Only reason they did was to get page views.

I sure hope so.

If they are going to run Mass Effect into the ground, they might as well do it in spectacular fashion.

The only good thing about the rumor being true would be that Anderson might be in the game.

Hmm, not entirely convinced by the rumour mill... of course anything is possible but EA already has some space shooter franchises about to enter rotation, such as Fuse/Overstrike and the Respawn's unannounced 'Halo Killer'.

To be sure, EA does want to compete aggressively with franchises like Gears of War and Halo, but I don't take it as gospel that Mass Effect will be the franchise they do it with. Just seems like a silly move that might hurt the Bioware brand and fracture the ME fanbase even more... but then AAA publishers are known to do extremely silly things for short-term sales.

Maybe EA sees ME4 in a position to compete with the commercial/critical success of Skyrim, which might explain the drive to make this first person.

Having said that, I do fully expect that the game will have an "online service model" ("not DRM, think of it as an MMO!") attached and put major emphasis on multiplayer. That seems to be the grand strategy these days and that rumour is credible enough.

Sadly 'steamlining' the choices and consequences might be seen as a wise move internally after the ME3 controversy. Why set yourself up for the risk of failure when the completely linear shooter-with-a-story Bioshock: Infinite gets so much commercial and critical love?

Besides, don't the Halo games take place on a single planet? I know Reach does, it's the only one I've played.

Halo 1: Alpha Halo
Halo 2: Delta Halo (small segment on Earth too)
Halo 3: 1/3 of the game on Earth, rest on the Ark
Halo 3 ODST: Earth
Halo Reach: Reach
Halo 4: Requiem
