Data so far. Draw what conclusions you will.

Too often I see people choose their "canon" ending and then rabidly defend it as the best (I've been guilty of that too). This inevitably leads to divisions, which inevitably leads less to discussion about the merits of each ending and more discussion about what's wrong with each ending. (ex: I could never pick x because y, so I don't even consider it). It also leads to banners.

Just for fun, let's say that your canon ending has been removed from the game. Out of the remaining choices, which do you pick and why? Though I know I can't stop you from counting ME3HEM as an ending, I would request that you don't use it, as it is ultimately fan fiction, for which there is another forum.

I'll go first.
Preferred Ending: Synthesis
Second Choice: Control
Explanation for Second Choice:

When I was up there for the first time, I didn't even consider Control. It was honestly a debate between Synthesis and Destroy. Destroy because I didn't want Shepard to abandon everyone (Original Ending High EMS, so I didn't even know if my squad survived the beam run), and Synthesis for reasons I won't delve into here. Ultimately, I picked Synthesis (probably 10 seconds before it would have given me CMF).

If that wasn't an option, I'd probably pick control. I'm always surprised that it isn't more popular (even in the beginning), as it really is the ending that most completely preserves the form of the galaxy we've come to love (for the short term anyway). In terms of the original ending, the Relays aren't fully destroyed, the Citadel is preserved, and no one except Shepard dies from the choice (even he/she lives in a way). I suppose if Shepard were 100% guaranteed to unambiguously die in Destroy, Control might be more popular.

Another interesting note is that Control may be a way for some form of Shepard to live into Synthesis, since, if it is inevitable (Catalyst in Extended Cut), Reaper-Shep may eventually be a part of it. Also, since the Citadel is preserved, if Shepard really wanted Synthesis he/she could just direct everyone to build another Crucible. Interesting implications no doubt.

Preferred Ending: Pull the plug on my console after, 'The best seats in the house.' Best ending already removed.

Second Choice: Destroy

Explanation for Second Choice: Since the StarBrat makes less sense than a bowl of cereal, and was written by what looks like a drunk writer who refutes his own story, Destroy is the only ending where the Geth, EDI and Shepard all live. Because that's how code works and that's how breathing works.

Preferred ending: MEHEM
Second choice: Destroy

Explanation of second choice: 1) I LIVE; 2) It kills the reapers.

Starbrat makes as much sense as ... well he's telling you that sugar coated froot loops are healthy.... Shepard is having a bad brain day thanks to Super Mac. Basically there is only the harvest. The reapers were created for a singular purpose and are programmed for that purpose: harvest advanced organic civilizations beyond their bronze age. They make marmalade out of them. The "Intelligence" is not fulfilling its purpose of preserving organic life. -- Leviathan. There are three ways to stop the harvest:

* reprogramming the Intelligence to issue a cease command to the reapers (control)
* make it so there is no longer organic life in the galaxy (synthesis)
* or destroy the reapers and the intelligence.

Prefer: MEHEM
second: destroy high EMS - Citadel party.

Shep lives, and has lots of blue babies with Liara
(oh right, Reapers are dead. that too)

I guess someone has to respond seriously sometime, so I'll start.

Preferred ending: Control (assuming peace at Rannoch; if the geth are already dead Destroy looks much better)

Second choice: Destroy

Explanation: I don't see any vital necessity to do Synthesis, since I don't buy the Catalyst's logic that a losing conflict with hostile AIs is inevitable. I imagine we'll get there fairly quickly on our own anyway, but I'd rather give people the option to opt-out if they want to stay primitive.

I recommend that you remove MEHEM as a possibility from the ending list, as it otherwise skews the results (giving people the ability to choose between two different flavors of Destroy).

My second choice is Synthesis. It may be badly explained, but that just means I can interpret it well, and it's still by far less bloody than Destroy.

Don't dismiss above posters because they did not answer like you wanted them too!

Seeing as I use a console and cant get MEHEM, my second favourite ending would be turning the game off, drawing a crappy picture of Shepard and friends having a beach party in MS Paint, then staring at it for a few hours.

My preferred ending is Destroy. If that were removed then I'd simply put the game up on eBay.

Sorry OP, but you said "favourite" ending.

I don't know about other people, but I don't have a favourite. I just have less-objectionable and ludicrous endings.

Least ridiculous: Destroy.
Next least stupid: Refuse.

Refuse because I can headcanon a conventional victory, or Shep and some few thousands surviving in stasis into the next cycle.

The remaining two endings are just dumb.

If Destroy wasn't an option, I'd go with Renegade Control.

Preferred Ending: Destroy
Second Choice: Control, I guess
Explanation for Second Choice: Would have been synthesis, but there's a lot that, in my opinion, needs to be fixed or changed for it to be appealing to me.  Like you said control "really is the ending that most completely preserves the form of the galaxy we've come to love" for the most part, outside of now there being a massive reaper police force.  But I really dislike playing God in some form in all three endings, which is why I prefer MEHEM, though it's not an actual ending the game offers.  Besides, if synthesis is inevitable, I'd rather see all the races come to it on their own terms.

I laughed.  Anyway...

Preferred Ending: Destroy
Second Choice: Paragon Control

Why: Things remain relatively the same except now Shepard became the guardian of the galaxy.  The epilogue for Control is also way better than Hackett's monologue in Destroy (yawn).

No MEHEM.

No destroy ending either?

Modern Warfare 3. Until the weather got nice. Then dust off my golf clubs and hit the links. Probably not pick up a video game until fall when Borderlands 2 came out.

Prefered ending: One that shall not be named in this thread since (gasp) it is just a fan fiction and there is apparently no place for that in role playing game.

Least awful ending among "official" extended 4: - Destroy.

Reason for choosing it - in my opinion control has 0 chance to work ,refuse is sadly written to be as a delaying the same RGB crucible plot for a cycle and synthesis is worse then reaping.

Agreed. I mean what I said. If my only options were control or synthesis. I won't pick them. So I suppose my secondary would be refuse. But really I would give this game anything if I could not destroy the Reapers

If I could not destroy the reapers it would have been traded in back in March of 2012, around March 15th.

 Preferred: Sync.
Second: Control.
Why:

To begin with, I dismiss the notion that an intact Reaper armada poses a threat to this galaxy past the directives of the old catalyst, and Control all but overrides that mandate. I also dismiss the notion that restarting the cycle is a legitimate threat with the incoming catalyst, given that his entire life previous was an endless struggle to save it against its extinction. Ultimately, Control is an equally-valid solution as Destroy in completing my main objective.

After that, Control has far more draw than Destroy in just about every way. Control nets the galaxy the Reaper fleet intact at no additional cost, whereas Destroy has us paying a higher one for salvage. They provide us with military aid and vast sums of compiled data. Their intellectual processing-power figures to be off-the-charts, which I could see pave the way for future research and innovation very favorably.

However, what I'd seek to achieve through Control -- both now and in the future -- is kind of "right there" in Sync.

So Control becomes my #2.

Preferred ending: MEHEM
Second Choice: Uninstall

Explanation: I find all the endings are so horrific that I feel like I've done something wrong in choosing them. I'd rather simply not play the game at all rather than have them forced onto my Shepard's story.

I'm pretty sure everyone who picked Synthesis had Control as their second choice and vice-versa.
