It's simple, play the game with good headphones, don't listen to music while playing. You can easily hear enemies on the other side of walls, behind you, spawning across the map... etc. without that eyesore on your screen.
Maybe for someone who just unlocked a Fury, and is learning how to tele, or someone who "plays casually" and listens to music or is doing other things while palying, it could be useful. But I find this gear to probably be the most useless out of any gear.
With audio clues + experience your situational awareness is perfectly fine, however with the hunter mode overlay it is slightly impaired. Combine that with the fact that there are much much more useful gear that you could use... Geth Scanner just seems pointless.

Geth Scanner is one of the best gear items in the game and the only people who don't like it are the same people who spec out of Hunter Mode on their GIs because it hurts their eyes.

I mean are there better gears in certain situations? Yeah but the geth scanner increases your ability to find targets and thus put out damage faster and you ability to stay alive by recognizing where threats are coming from.

1) i'm often talking with friends so no i can't hear all that well
2) i can't turn off the music, it's outside
3) good headphones are expensive (especially if you're a snob like me) and give me a headache after wearing for extended periods
4) the visuals are very valuable to me. not even the wall hax, i use the white-out + red highlighting to really defocus the extraneous stuff on screen and focus on the enemies

You can hear them yes, but does the noise tell you whether they're within your attack range or not. Would be pretty awkward for you to use your bat hearing to Smash the brute you can hear on the other side of that wall. Only to find that same brute come around the corner with a full yellow bar because he wasn't close enough to get hit by smash the whole time.

It's not overrated, it's that good. Visual cues are much more important than auditory cues in this game.

*opinion, not ignorance. Opinions have a way of finding themselves on forums.
I disagree though, everyone says it's so great at locating enemies but IMO not really. It gives you a bit more accuracy I guess for shooting through walls, but often times you can catch enemy health/shields icon through walls anyways.
