If not the kid from Vancouver, who/what would you have the Catalyst be?

Let me start off by saying that I think the Catalyst taking the form of a child fits. His is a story of creator and created, which is mirrored by our own parent-child dichotomy, and a constant theme throughout the Mass Effect series. I don't intend for this to be Catalyst Hate Thread #23254042.

That said, if not that form, what?

Personally, I would have had it be Saren. Perhaps we could say that Saren did achieve the synthetic immortality he wanted, and that Sovereign's seemingly anomalous shut down was the result of him transferring what was left of Saren to the Citadel, the reason being that Saren was an organic who sought cooperation with synthetics, and Sovereign believed that such a mind was worth saving, and important to its goal of protecting organic life.

The Catalyst wouldn't represent itself as an individual entity in this example, but instead remain faceless and voiceless as the Reaper collective that the Saren AI communicates with. The Saren AI could tell Shepard what it had learned from being in the Citadel for the last 3 years, as well as what it could determine about the function of the Crucible.

Honestly, I find this (Sovereign sacrificing itself in the name of the Creator-Created conflict) more convincing on a surface level than anything the Catalyst said. It would also be badass to have Saren back again, and to have Saren and Shepard (who in many ways became the same individual) facing the decision together at the end.

I'm somewhat irritated that people seem to be upset at being 'manipulated' by the Catalyst being a kid and simultaneously argue that he should have been replaced by a dead squadmate or something.

I never had a problem with the Catalyst himself.

I'd have preferred a disembodied voice. In fact a project like David in Overlord would have sufficed for me. I think a lot of the hate is that he, you know, looks like a child.

The catalyst wasn't a bad plot element...

But for the sake of the argument...I was expecting it to be Harbinger...

However I doubt that he would be as generous to give us a choice.

it obviously is, as all the people who seem to dislike him calls him "Star-kid" or "starbrat".

 1.) Leviathan.
2.) Generic-looking drone thingy.

Leviathan DLC mission should have been main-game content. Failing that, getting a Leviathan!Catalyst could have been an alternative means for us to get the story and everything.

Also, it might have helped to work with a proxy that's somewhat close to the Reapers as we know them, as it may help give us a feeling that the catalyst is giving it to us straight -- no BS. However, I'm inclined to think the catalyst would have aroused suspicion regardless what he said/looked like simply by ever associating himself with the Reapers.

That leads me to my next preference, a completely neutral figure in the mold of Vigil or the like.

I figured "If not" was accepting enough to warrant the reading of the first sentence.

A neutral party in the same role? Avina, with a little script doctoring.

Having Avina as the ultimate antagonist of the series would be ridiculous.

Eh, I personally feel there was no need for a Catalyst (at least as a sentient entity) to begin with. The information he gives you is something you should have pieced together over the course of the game before you hit the finale and the decision chamber.

Of course, if I have to choose someone, I'd..... honestly have no idea who I'd pick. Maybe Vigil, if we're going for cyclical book-ends.

Agreed. On top of everything else that's wrong with that, It's clearly a VI the Asari installed.

EDIT: However, if she was simply explaining what was going on (similar to the Saren AI in my example), it would make more sense. That said, it's a little too comedic to fit.

It couldn't be someone villainous like Harbinger or Saren because that would create bias. It's risky choosing dead squadmates too, since most players who let their squadmates die do it for selfish reasons. Actually, thinking about it:

Catalyst: Wake up.

Shepard: Urrggh...Jacob? Is that you?

Catalyst: No. I am the Catalyst, the collective embodiment of the Reapers.

Shepard: Why do you look and sound like Jacob?

Catalyst: It was necessary to choose a familiar form in order to communicate with us. I have chosen this being, who you deliberately allowed to die by ordering him through dangerous vents. Your reasoning for this was that he was, quote, "a boring human".

Shepard: Why?

Catalyst: Because I'm about to ask you to do some seriously undignified **** and I figured it would be easier for both of us if we said goodbye to your self-esteem first.

Yep, guilty.  I'd find the Catalyst a lot less irritating if he wasn't in the form of the kid from the dreams.

The way I see it Avina would have made a nice data dump as to what the Crucible can do. She could still be just a VI and in no way tied to the Reapers.

I just wonder why he's a kid from your dreams of Vancouver... my dislike of him comes from the conversation and what he is. But really, how did the AI know about the kid or the dreams? Sorta' strange.

Edit: As to what he could have been otherwise, maybe just a lighted hazy cloud or something.

I'm having a lot of trouble understanding why people seem to think that 'disliking' the leader of the Reapers is somehow a bad thing. As if you're supposed to like him?

Well, would you be more inclined to agreeing with certain options if you liked someone or disliked someone, obviously depending on the circumstance.

He's the leader of Reapers. You're not obligated to agree with him.

I'd frankly have him absent. The Citadel opens, the Crucible docks and presto! Climax over. You get a cool cut scene based on your choices & EMS and roll credits. Would have been so much better.
