[Mass Effect 1] Start of the Journey: Single Playthrough Builds by Simbacca. NOTE: You will not have access to a bonus power on your first playthrough.
General advice and builds by The Grey Ranger.
ME 1 weapon and armor calculations by The Grey Ranger.
Generally, try to have a team with some tech and biotics. Biotics are more important for crowd control. You or a squadmate should have Electronics and Decryption to unlock everything. Recommend levelling these up to Master as soon as possible.
Crouching will improve the accuracy and stability of weapons.
The Pistol is considered the best weapon in the game. Master Marksman (rank 12) will deal more damage per second (DPS) than the assault rifle. Assault Rifles and Sniper Rifles are generally terrible until rank IV (when you reach level 20 or so).
When you reach level 20, the Rogue VI mission will unlock. After reaching level 20, I recommend returning to the Citadel. Admiral Hackett will automatically talk to you and give you the mission. Completing this mission will earn you a class specialization; you will have to choose between one of two specializations. This will add 6 more ranks to your class passive talent (which previously had only 6 ranks) and will improve at least two of you other powers.
When you get 1,000,000 credits, it will unlock Spectre weapons from the C-Sec Requisitions officer and the Normandy Requisitions Officer. These are the best weapons in the game.
Best Omni Tools and Bio Amps are manufactured by Serrice, and start at rank VIII I believe, when you reach level 40-45. Best armor is generally Colossus armor which also starts at rank VIII.
Armor Piercing/Tungsten is the best ammo for synthetics; Tungsten is capped at VII and stops being available once VIII loot becomes available. Keep as many as you can. Same goes for Anti-Personnel/Shredder Ammo for organics.
Medical Exoskeletons (starting at rank VIII I think) are the best armor mods in the game; they improve cooldowns and health regeneration. You can get one fairly early from Dr. Michel on the Citadel.
You automatically gain a level when you become a Spectre.
That's all I can think of at the moment to try to help you. Knowing your class would help provide more specific advice.
I also hear that ME1 on the PS3 has given a lot of people trouble; apparently some players have had issues with it, mostly apparently stemming from the PSN download that can give you trouble with frame rate and/or crashing. and possibly the hacking minigames that may become impossible. So be forewarned. I do not have a PS3 and not everyone has these issues, but I have seen some thrreads complaining about them.

After being in love with Mass Effect ever since ME2 was released for the PS3, I recently decided to pick up the original game. Which is a wonderful game I have only one problem with; I can't survive more than 30 seconds in combat. Any advice would be appreiciated.
Use a lot of cover.
As Red said, make sure you have at least 1 tech and 1 biotic on the team. Use their crowd control abilities as much as possible. Lift keeps an enemy from shooting at you and makes them an easy target. Throw knocks them down. Sabotage overheats their weapons so they can't shoot. Overload does a lot of damage to thier shields. Use these powers constantly.
You start with Kaiden so he can cover all of this for you.
In the early game, almost all the weapons suck except pistols, so stick with it. Use the Marksman ability as much as possible to increase your damage.

I recommend drinking a lot to make the tedium less stressful. Or does it make it more stressful, it is hard to say.
But seriously, anything Grey Ranger said about ME1 is pretty much the gospel as far as that game goes.
Vanguard is a really good class in that game. But you need to level up your protections. You can't get Barrier until Level 6, IIRC but after that put some points in it.

In ME1, for a Vanguard? Oh yeah you want lift. Best crowd control in the game.

If you have weapon talents spend one point for each level gain to level 20 because it is easy to get to that level even from the first citadel visit. If you have multiple weapon talents then flip flop between them every level.

Tali, Garrus, and Kaidan are the three that have Decryption and Electronics both. Liara has Electronics for some reason.
