So, you can't meet Kelly unless you romanced her, right? cause wiki is kinda vague about that.

Does that mean that Prejek Paddlefish cannot be acquired unless you romanced Kelly?

i think you just have to have dinner with her, which doesn't count as romance

In the wiki, the dinner is mentioned in the Romance section.

Wiki sites are not really reliable all the time since it's sometimes just what people think rather than fact. It's why you can't use them as sources in colleges and so on.

Dinner happens whether you are in a romance or just friends with Kelly. There is a line at some point where Kelly says something about falling. If you answer you'd do more than catch her, I think that puts you on the romance path. If you answer you'd catch her, it's just friends. At least I remember a developer saying that at some point I believe. After that conversation, she'll give you a line about being too forward to let you alter the path one more time.

The dinner happens either way if you keep talking to her. You'll only get the email to meet her in your quarters after the game if it was a romance. Although to be honest, it's not much of a romance to begin with since you can't unlock the Paramour achievement with it and it only happens if you didn't romance anyone else.

So all you have to do is have dinner with her. Well, that and have her make it to 3 alive.

I always have my Shepards flirt with Kelly (just so that I can get my fish back in ME3) and then romance someone else.  I don't consider Kelly's "romance" to be a legitamate romance

Thanks for the detailed explanation.

I guess I missed a lot of Kelly in ME2 then. I was afraid of triggering a romance and avoided talking with her other then usual post-mission talks.

I have now read this, and I am even more confused about the fish situation:

If you import a save from Mass Effect 2 with a live Prejek Paddlefish, take care of it carefully! Keep it alive thorugh an entire Mass Effect 3 playthrough AND a Mass Effect 3 New Game+ playthrough you can get a special Intel Bonus from Liara's Quarters on the Normandy. The Prejek Paddlefish Bonus gives you a 10% bonus to either Weapon Damage or Power Damage.

Never seemed like much of a romance to me either, but some people refer to it as one. I think someone from BW mentioned that stuff in my post when people were freaking out about being "unfaithful" when ME3 came out.

As for fish, I decided long before I had dinner with Kelly that after all the death I'd caused, I was not cut out to own fish anyway.

It's no real romance and does not conflict with any real romance. But the dinner still only comes from flirting with her a lot, not just being friendly. If you want to think that's just friendly banter (you know, like with James), nothing in the game stops you from doing so.

Just flirt with her and have dinner, don't worry about romances, it doesn't mean anything. The only thing you have to keep in mind is not to invite her in your cabin to dance for you after the suicide mission.

Thanks for the answers!

I still don't understand something.
Some sources I read say that you get the Paddlefish from Kelly, and then you get the kit from Glyph.
Others say that you get the fish at the beginning of the game, and you must keep it alive till the end and start a NG+ playthrough to get the kit.

What's true?

As far as I know you get the fish from Kelly in the fresh import, and when you bring living fish in a NG+, you get intel. Not certain.

A BioWare employee came in one of these threads (search function..who'd of known) and said that there's TWO paths with Kelly...it involves the "I'd catch you" and "I'd embrace you" lines.

catch..friends
embrace...romance

you have a second chance to go back to friend path when she asks if she was too forward.

but either of those lead to the dinner...either as "friends" (catch) or in the romance path (embrace)

you don't need to romance Kelly to have her feed your fish or show up in ME3..just have the dinner

I never get fish in ME2 until Kelly offers to feed them (she offers even if the tank is empty). As long as she survives the collector base (go rescue the crew right after the abduction), she will keep your fish alive and give them back to you in ME3 after you meet her in the refugee camp. It's easy to keep them alive because you can purchase an aquarium VI that will feed them. I just started an NG+ where I was able to get Prejak paddle fish at the upgrade terminal in Liara's quarters, although I'm pretty sure I already had some. At the same time, I had an option for an upgrade, but I don't think it's connected to the fish in any way.

Edited:

When I was able to select the paddle fish at the terminal, I also was able to select a 10% power damage bonus. The bonuses are usually 5%.

If I remember correctly, in one of my NG+ games, a Hanar diplomat expresses interest in your Prejak paddle fish, but can't remember what you get in return if you give it your fish. I'll update this post if I run across it.

Sorry for the pseudo-necro, but I was playing through yet again over the weekend and I got to the point where you meet Kelly at the docks. For the first time, I told her to stay and help the people knowing that she would be killed. After the coup, i got the 'news' by eavesdropping some dude in the med area talking about it. Ken and Gabby mentioned it, but there was no name on the memorial wall! Kelly deserved better I think, at the very least she deserved to have her name on the wall, she was a Normandy crewperson. It would have been nice to have her mentioned a few more times as well. I was quite disappointed.

Holy necro batman.

But yeah.. I also think they should've at least given her the same facial features and voice. It barely looks and sounds like Kelly in ME2.

There you have it, folks.

Kelly Chambers is officially the most neglected character in the Mass Effect franchise.

If Kelly dies during the coup attempt, it is a death not during service aboard or related directly to the Normandy, so she doesn't get  a placard.

Sad, I know.

She is also along with Traynor and Allers the least interesting.
