Using a Human Vanguard and a Scorpion, no consumables. It's the first (technically second) Platinum game I've played, the very first Platinum game being full of missile glitchers. Of course the two Juggernauts and Krosetinel probably helped with getting to extraction, but still. I feel good about finishing a plat game.

What's the best class and build for someone wanting to take their first run at Platinum? My weapons aren't great, most of my URs are at level 1, so I'm probably going to be better off with a power build.

No. I died a few times (damn marauders), less than four I think,  but that didn't bother them. I was mainly supporting the Juggernauts with my Scorpion and charging at anything that got close. I revived two people and almost got killed while doing it. I got the second top score early on but halfway into the game I ended up in third.

Also I don't think the Human Vanguard is the best choice for getting into Platinum but here's my build:

Biotic charge: Radius, Power Synergy, Bonus Power
-skipped shockwave-
Nova: Force and Damage, Power Recharge, Pierce
Alliance Training: Damage and Capacity, Power Damage, Weapon Damage
Fitness: All of the bottom upgrades

Used a Scorpion IV and Pirahna X, but I barely used my Pirahna.
EDIT: Also I'd like to mention that I was looking for a gold game. Didn't realize I was in platinum until Wave 3.

I usually play gold games without consumables. I wasn't looking to play a platinum game but you all know how weird the search function in this game can be.

Are a lot of you seriously dependent on consumables? On platinum I can understand that it's a must have but I didn't get the chance to put on any since I joined mid-game. But on gold you don't need it unless you're using crappy weapons.

I'd agree with that.

A) Never put consumables on before joining a lobby because you could end up losing them all if you lose your connection to the game before you actually join

 Gold, if you've been playing long enough and have gotten good enough, is easy enough to where you don't necessarily need consumables. Hell, I only put random level 1 consumables on nowadays to get rid of them in Gold lobbies.

It's not about being dependent, it's about anti- showing that you're going to use a missile/ medigel if you need to. All the best people I play with absolutely don't need consumables but will use them even on silver. It's a matter of principle.

Doesn't play Platinum yet doesn't use consumables in Gold either   

Just what do you do with all those level 1 n 2?   Assuming you are stock piling 3 n 4 for use in Platinum at sometime in the future.

Boggles my mind why players do not respect the team enough to use equipment, then again if nothing is put on they have nothing to loose and generally get carried anyhow.

No, because it's impossible to run out of them even if you use them every single game you play until the end of time. Hoarding is a mental illness.

A lot of us have thousands of games under our belt when it comes to gold and platinum, we fully understand what kits at level 20 can do along with the weapons at X as many of us finished our manifests long ago, and as I mentioned we have enough respect for the team to at least put a level one on as we know the difference it will make, however I understand the have if flooded with many that will not use equipment and end up being carried, you know back in June one would be kicked from Silver for not using equipment, things have really changed.

I never gear up before searching for a platinum game. I simply hate joining the Rio box-of-shame in progress, and I want the opportunity to quit without sacrificing my consumables.

Sometimes though, I get into a lobby, and then get instant vote kicked out before I can even gear up. Shrugs, their loss...
